I do not understand JAL's reluctance to join One World, esp as ANA is a member of Star Alliance.

I think JL has been reluctant to join in because it has a solid customer base in Japan for its international services, which are far, far extensive than NH's. It has enough of bilateral ties and has demand enough to stay out of any alliance.
(NH's new chief back in April said his company is not going to expand its route network, while frequency on some routes may be increased.)
NH had to join Star to maintain its international services competitive with an expanded network that its partners like UA, LH, AC and TG has helped them to create. I read an interview with NH's new chief in April.
In the past several weeks, JL signed partnership agreement with SQ and a few other airlines. It was in the area of cargo. I don't know what it signifies.
JL's current president said he would announce what action to take about alliance by March this year but nothing has so far come out, as far as I am aware.

This year, I heard the information about this alliance issue.
I believe one of the executive mentioned JAL would not join any alliance for now during the press conference.
There are the some of the reasons:
1) existance of world wide network
2) strong tie with some of the one world members but also with the members of other alliances--> joinning the OW means JAL looses other code sharing routes
That's why JAL decided to stay current position.
(Sorry for the bad English)

Dear FlyerGold II and all,
