JAL said it will sell all of its ten MD-11 jets over three years from fiscal 2002, replacing them with 10 planes for which JAL will shortly place orders with Boeing Co. The carrier plans to buy eight Boeing 777-200ER jets with 300 to 350 seats and two B767-300ERs with 240 seats. The MD-11 planes have a seating capacity of 230-300.

It is amazing that JAL will keep its over-aged DC-10s while retiring newer MD-11s before their depreciation! JL's DC10s are the notorious of the notorious among Asian routes, aren't they, Silver?
Well, now that I said 'Sayonara' to JAL's Global Club, it really does not matter, though.
JAL has placed an order to purchase 8 new Boeing 777-200ERs and three 767-300ERs. The 777s and two of the three 767s will be direct replacements for JAL's fleet of 10 MD-11s. The third 767-300ER will allow JAL to better accommodate the new second runway at Narita Airport, outside of Tokyo, which is scheduled to open during the summer of 2002.

The value of the new airplanes at list prices is estimated at $1.6 billion. Deliveries are scheduled between 2002 and 2004.
The MD-11s will be traded in to Boeing (NYSE: BA - news), demonstrating the company's ability to provide total solutions to its customers. Boeing will manage the conversion of the airplanes into cargo configuration, and then deliver them to United Parcel Service as MD-11 Freighters.
``This is a terrific example of Boeing total solutions at work,'' said Seddik Belyamani, executive.

DL, JL, AA, SN & SR have all been planning to sell their MD11s, with most going to FedEx or UPS. The fact that JL's will go to Boeing, however, stirs somethin that maybe Boeing has a used M11 deal in the works?
