My family and I are thinking of taking JAL first from SFO to NRT. Any experiences out there to compare JAL with CX or with AA from SJC? THANKS

There are two types of full flat seats among JAL aircrafts, the single seat type called "Sky Sleeper Solo," and the more conventional 2+2 configuration. If you are traveling with your family, you might want to fly on the 2+2 configuration, unless you're in a fight. The seats itself are okay, at least personally I can sleep in them.
JL is a fine carrier, typical Japanese service, pretty clean planes. I'd be happy to fly first class with them anytime. I'm sure you'll enjoy flying with them.
Comparing it with other carriers, yes, CX is probably better, if I had the choice, I will fly CX over JL. But you know, they're in a class of their own.
By the way, if you're a big lavatory fan, you've got to fly JAL! They have these high-tech windows which are equipted with a switch that turns them from transparent to shaded (yah sure, somebody is watching you do it at 10,000 feet..). They also have these boards which you pull down and stand on it when you change your clothes. Sooooo Japanese!
