This works as one-way as well, btw.

The cheapest way to go PHL->SFO for me in january was actually to buy this along with a cheap LAX->SFO UA fare.

They seem to come and go. I'm usually looking at one-way prices between PHL and SFO. Sometimes you can find $169 each way, and then a week or two later its gone.

$97 each way to LAX is a great deal ^

Frontier will do PHL-SFO (through Denver) for $219 in January. I'm surprised US doesn't match that fare.

For some reason, over the last few years PHL-LAX on US has been super cheap in December and January, except right at the holidays. Heck, even car rentals in LA can be a steal this time of the year. Two years ago, I reserved a car from Hertz for $12.95/day! When I got to LAX to get the car, I asked for an upgrade to a convertible. It was only $5/day extra! So it cost me $80, all in, to zip around LA and the OC in a Mustang convertible for four days! :D

There's something going on with Frontier - they had a boat load of low fares out west. I want to say like $119++ to SAN, about the same to SEA over the weekend. I wonder if they need butts in the seats that badly, or if they are taking a shot at US, especially since even $200 r/ts are probably loss leaders.

Every now and then US decides to match the true LCC's on these routes. It must depend on that lovely concept of Yield management.

Business Travel starts to fall off from late Nov through New Years, so they tend to reduce the prices to keep the seats filled.

The logical follow up is - how are upgrade successes on the PHL-LAX/SFO routes in Nov/Dec?

US has the non stop while Frontier and every other airline offer a 1 stop. That is one reason why they might not want to match. People pay more for the nonstop.
