I will soon be on a 2-week trip, and (I know that this is very un-FlyerTalk) I will have to check one bag :( . Given that, can I still do the same-day standby? I assume I then need to ask at check-in counter?
Thanks in advance. (I did search, and found several threads on standby policies, but since no real FTer ever checks baggage... :) )

I have done this - they specially screen the bag - and it normally goes on the flight that you are standing by for. So if you dont make it - your bag will be sitting at your destination before you are

Keep in mind that when flying standby, it's usually a "voluntary separation" for your checked bag. Reasoning behind this is, since there's no guarantee you'll make it on the flight, there's no guarantee your bag will make it either. US will not pay for delivery should your bag come on a later flight, so be prepared in a worst-case scenario to come back to the airport to pick it up.

How would this work when coming off a European flight at PHL? Would I ask about standing by for a connecting flight in Europe, or at baggage re-check after immigration in PHL?
