I was just wondering how the complimentary upgrades as a Silver Member work? Do I have to buy that "upgradable" fare? And not the cheapest possible ticket they have?

Full fare (Y) tickets can be upgraded at the time of purchase.

Any other fare (except for reward travel) is upgradeable at your 2 day window. Even super cheap fares.

If seats are available your upgrade should clear at your window, you don't need to request them in advance. If not check-in online as early as possible and ask to be put on the upgrade list at the airport. All published airfares are eligable to be upgraded at your window, Y and B fares will clear at booking.
