Assuming one can buy duty free in the UK, would the procedure be to place it in ones checked luggage before rechecking it for a connecting flight? You have to clear security again so does the "baggie" rule come into play?

On my LGW-CLT flight yesterday this seemed to be the case.

Thanks. If possible, I like to bring back a bottle of single malt for DH as a thank you for holding down the fort while I'm away.

Very good question. I've never flown International into PHL, but am doing it next week. You can't stay in the secure area when connecting from International to domestic on US in PHL?

No, well, sort of. You are away from non US cleared travellers, AFAIK, but you do have to go through a US security gate after you've rechecked your bags. I wonder if they make announcements to that effect? Otherwise, going through that security gate is going to be even more of a pain than it is usually.

When you land in PHL on a transatlantic flight you must clear customs, pick up all of your checked luggage and hand carry it through immigration. If you have bought duty free at the European city or on the airplane you must at that point put the liquid items(perfumes, liquor, etc.) into your checked bags. Once you have cleared immigration you will be directed right down the hall to the recheck line to get your bags transferred to your connecting flight. It is all very clearly marked, you can't miss it. You do have to go through security again once you reach your departure terminal, the reason being that you have had access to your checked bags.

jenniferpa-to answer your question, yes, the "baggie" procedures are in place on domestic connections. Remember, you can't carry any liquids on board a flight out of Europe so if you have all of your toiletries in your carry on in a baggie they will discard it at the European security point. Baggies are only permissable in the U.S. :)

Gallywench - are you saying that you can't purchase duty free currently in the UK, or are you just talking about bringing stuff though UK security (i.e nothing)? If I have to, I'll purchase my bribery bottle from an off-license and pack it in checkeds baggage.

Ok ignore this - I see you mention duty free in your post (duh)

A highly useful post as usual, and thank you. However I must take issue with one major point which will mislead European pax, as you have most certainly got things a little back to front here. European arriving passengers don't have to lug their checked bags through immigration. Immigration happens upon arrival, BEFORE customs, and before we even see our bags. We have no checked bags to carry through immigration. We only get to see our checked bags AFTER immigration, and pick them up in the baggage hall. Then we go through customs.

Has anything changed i should maybe know about? I flew last month and this was how it went... cheers

Warbo,
I will be the first to admit that I am many things, one of them is dyslexic! :) You are absolutely right, I had them mixed up. Sorry if it caused any confusion.
