We need to be in Providence by 10am on a Sunday morning in October. Starting at the FDR Drive in the low 60s, how much time should we allow to make this drive? What time do you recommend leaving? I've never driven to Providence before.
I was thinking 5:30am....

I'm not sure how the traffic is south of New Haven, but once past there, you can easily do the trip to Providence in 2-2.5 hours - or less! :D (The "speed limit" :D most of the way is 65 MPH!)

I would think on a Sunday morning traffic would be light and speeds high. It's about 175 miles, all on one highway, so kinda depends on fast you drive!

I do the drive pretty regulary, I am 15 minutes north of Providence. Since you are doing a Sunday in October the traffic should not be that bad unless there is an accident. I think 3 hours 15 minutes is a good conservative estimate for Providence. I have done it in as little as 2 h 40 m and as much as 4 h 30

I just did this drive a few weeks ago on a weekend and it took me 3 hours. I don't drive particularly fast (usually 5-10mph + speed limit).

Thank you everybody. magiciansampras, how could you have done this drive in 3 hours at normal speed when the_traveler said it's about 2-2 1/2 hours from New Haven? No way you can get from the FDR in midtown to New Haven in 30 minutes to an hour without speeding just a bit. :D
I guess we can be on the road at 6am and know we'll get there in plenty of time before 10.

Oops, my bad, I was referring to the New Haven --> Providence portion of the trip :). NYC would be a bit longer obviously. I thought I had quoted the_traveler, but I guess I did not!! :)

2-2.5 from New Haven??????!?!!!! Driving at 25 mph most likely.
Providence is three hours from NY only marginally above the speed limit (65-70), traffic conditions permitting. Not a second more. New Haven is 1.5 hours, another 1.5 to Providence.

I agree! I live about 25 miles off I-95 (about the same as from where I get on to Providence on I-95 - but it's all at 60 MPH :D ), and it takes me about 1.5 hours to get to Old Saybrook!

True.. I was going from the Bridgeport area to around Lincoln, RI, so that does add some time. I guess I drive slow :).
