How is the FCO airport? How big and crowded is it?

I had to spend 3 hours there.
FCO is not very big, not very nice. It only gets a little crowded in the restaurants during lunchtime when the airport-, airline-, shop-employees have lunch.
You could take a taxi to Ostia, they have a beach, but it's not nice either.

Thank you for the info. I'll bring a good book.

Maybe find someone also traveling who can give you guest access to one of the Alitalia clubs?

I think Ostia Antica is closer, and is a very interesting place. Was last rebuilt by Nero. was forgotten, and found when a farmer hit a building with a plow.

Thanks. Do you know if there is a good, inexpensive hotel here for one night?

well, I know of a really inexpensive hotel near there. Our room was exactally the size of the bed. luggage was stored on a shelf over the bed. the door to the bathroom was cut at bed level, and only the upper part opened. the bathroom was relatively smaller than the bedroom.

upon arrival, we were asked if the rental was for one hour, or for how many hours.

If you wish more information, I can search my records.

lol Thank you but it sounds a little too inexpensive.
I need a clean, safe, inexpensive hotel for two, close to the Rome airport.

I had a 5-hour layover at FCO earlier this month (layover later turned to an 8+ hour layover thanks to CY, but that's besides the point).

We rented a car through Sixti (http://www.sixti.com). Got a Smart Car (the little guy) for 8 Euro total. Drove 10 minutes to Ostia Antica, spent 1.5 hours there (could have spent another 30 min to an hour if we had more time and energy), and got back to the airport in no time!

Is FCO the same as the Leonardo de Vinchi airport? From the web-site it is large and full of shops. I love to shop, so my time may go fast.
I am also looking for suggestions for a hotel, near the airport, for one night. Thanks for any suggestions.

Yes, that's the airport.... but only some (nice) shops...nothing to write home.
Look at NY Times from today. Nice article about Ostia Antica

Same airport. Two points:

1) Hilton is connected to airport via walkway for overnight flights.
2) The train to downtown Rome will take at least 1/2 hour. I would not risk that (and the return) for such a short layover. It is not as if it drops you off anywhere convenient, either (like AMS Centraal Station)
