I am looking at flights to SJU via PHL for this weekend. When I look at the First Class seating availability map it is not that of an A330. It looks like the seating configuration of an A319. Has anyone else seen this in the past? Do they limit the amount of people in F in case of a downgrade/equipment swap? If I call res can they tell me is a specefic seat is open, or would they see the same seating map as I do?

I know about seatguru, I love seatguru. My problem is when I try to book a ticket to SJU, it says the aircraft is a A333, when I go to select a seat the seat map shown is NOT a A333 seat map.

It is possible that they are subbing this aircraft and already know about it.

Extremely possible, especially this time of year. Last Friday, 1070/1024 was a 757 (hence my "Crew Trumps CP" thread).

And this Friday, according to the CP desk, it's a 319. The A333 used for this flight is the reserve for the T/A flights.

I would guess that quite simply this is a change of equipment. The A330 doesn't always do this route, it depends on transatlantic ops.

Other posters are correct --- this aircraft substitutes somewhat often. It's the first aircraft pulled if there are issues with the intl fleet. When that happens, they drop it back to a smaller Airbus or a 757.

Is there a better time of year or day of week (or anything with an iota of predictability) to try and get on the 333 to SJU?

Seems like there'd be a ton of open seats in Y and Envoy... or a ton of bumping opportunities on an equipment change if they book to full capacity on the A333 and sub it.

So this is a full-on reserve (backup) plane? Not the end-point for some T/A route?

I see they have 10 B767 and 9 A333 aircraft. From my knowledge of routes they have the following committed:

PHL-LGW A333
PHL-MAN A333
PHL-FRA A333
PHL-FCO A333
PHL-MUC A333 (OKTOBERFEST TIMEFRAME ONLY)
PHL-SJU A333 (FL# 1024)
PHL-CDG A333
PHL-MAD A333
CLT-FRA A333
CLT-LGW A333

PHL-VCE 767
PHL-ARN 767
PHL-AMS 767
PHL-BCN 767
PHL-BDA 767 (THIS IS A SHORT FLIGHT!)
PHL-CLT 767
PHL-DUB 767 (NOT SHOWING AS SEASONAL - IS IT?)
PHL-FRA 767 (SEASONAL TO OCT07)
PHL-MXP 767
PHL-MUC 767
CLT-CUN 767 (SEASONAL TO SEP05)
CLT-DUB 767 (NOT SHOWING AS SEASONAL - IS IT?)

My guess is you don't get the A333 for the entire mid-September to mid-October timeframe (or whenever they're running the A333 to MUC for Oktoberfest). That would mean they have eight dedicated A333 routes and one that's mainly SJU + MUC in September + Backup aircraft as needed.

The counts on the 767 don't add up either, but I'm guessing the PHL-CLT is the start or end of one of the T/As listed. And the seasonal flights would have some effect on availability. Odd that the DUB flights don't show as seasonal (though I think they are - I can't book them for November).

The 767 to BDA was interesting - I didn't know anyone flew widebodies into the Caribbean (except of course for the A333 to SJU).

Sorry for the long semi-off-topic post... that's insomnia for you... :D

If anyone has anecdotal stories about the A333 to SJU, I'd love to hear them... I'm thinking of booking that in '07 and am not having any luck with miles-to-Envoy ups on my '06 T/As... :(
