I'm a Star Alliance Gold memeber and flying from BDL to SAN via PHL on thursday night.

I have had alot of bad luck with the BDL - PHL segment recently and have missed my connecting flights on 2 occasions most recently because of the mess PHL is.

the flight schedule is 5:10 departure for PHL arrive 6:21 and depart for for SAN at 8pm. The only problem is that the 5:10 usually doesn't get off the ground closer to 6 or 6:30pm for some odd reason or even later.

Does anyone know my options for possible rerouting if I miss the flight to SAN?

By that time of the night, I think you will be out of options. I don't see how you would be able to get there until the next day.

Looking at the US downloadable timetable, that's the last one on US metal to SAN. If irregular ops occur and you know it while you're at BDL, there is a UA connection BDL-ORD-SAN that you could ask to be put on, if space is available. Leaves BDL at 5:28, gets into SAN at 10:32.

Thanks - its good to know now that I can ask while I'm still on the ground in BDL. 3 weeks ago I was heading to YYZ and missed my connection in PHL. The G/A wouldn't let me get on a direct from BDL to YYZ on A/C since I technically hadn't missed my connection yet but it was obvious that it was going to happen. I guess I'll just push to be rerouted if this happens on thursday

So you say typically the BDL (Hartford) flight usually can be up to 1 hour and 20 minutes late departing from Hartford and you blame the PHL airport because you miss an 8PM connection ?

It's probably reasonable to assume that the BDL-PHL flight is late due to a) late inbound arriving aircraft - from PHL or b) Ground stop leaving BDL due to conditions in PHL. So yes, I think the OP's decision to blame PHL is quite reasonable.

Yes PHL is generally the culprit due to traffic on the ground or in the air around the airport. If you looked at the average arrival delays at PHL yesterday they were 2hrs around 9pm last night and the average departure delays were 45mins due to the rain passing through the area. It will be a crap shoot to make this connection on thursday, given 40% chance of showers in the PHL area on Thursday.

I'm going to take the advice and see if US Air will put me on the UA flight to ORD if they start announcing a delay for the BDL-PHL segment but I'm sure there might be little capacity due to that being a popular route etc.

Hopefully I'm not stranded once again at PHL. I don't like the airport or the area!

i'd monitor the actual arrival trend for your booked 1st leg on flightaware. if it's too close, i'd hop an earlier BDL-PHL on standby.

That way you'd avoid the mess in PHL and ORD.
US 3437, BDL-PIT, dep. 3:30pm
US 67, PIT-SAN, dep. 5:55pm

Or, if that's too early, you could double connect in CLT and PHX, leaving BDL at 4:45pm and arriving SAN at 10:53pm, but if you're leaving Thursday this week, there's a very good chance CLT traffic will be disrupted by Ernesto, so I'd try the PIT option.

The PIT is a very good option! I just don't want to be stuck in PHL once again. Its a mess there when the weather doesn't co-operate

Sorry for the basic question here but how much (in general) will it cost to make that change?

Would I be looking at change fee + fare differences (if applicable) vs. change fee only?

Depends on your fare class. You'll always have to pay the fare difference; if you're in a restricted fare class, you'll also have to pay a $100 change fee. That's waved for the higher fare classes (Y, B, and M, I believe, but others would know better.) The other option would be to go to the airport early and try to standby for the PIT flight; if there's space available, you can pay $25 for a confirmed seat on the earlier flights (it may be $50 since you're connecting; again, others would know better.)

There's a 3:25pm flight to PHL which you could shoot for to avoid any change fee. Then you'd just be stuck with the $25 standby fee. Heck, with a 3 1/2 hour layover, your luggage might even make it to your connecting flight!
Also, for what it's worth, the 8pm SAN flight has a dismal on-time percentage, so you very well could be safe with the original itinerary even assuming a 45-minute delay from BDL.

Just wanted to update you that everything went as planned and all flights were on time! My luggage even made it! SAN is a great city!

Glad everything worked out ok. My wife and I were in SAN last month and absolutely loved it!
