View Full Version : How much time should we give ourselves?

We're flying from PHL to FCO (Rome) on a Saturday night next week - 6:10 PM departure.

Neither of us have flown internationally since before 9/11 nor have either of us flown since the new liquids security restrictions went into effect.

How much time should we leave ourselves to get checked in, through security, etc.? We're in Envoy so I do want to enjoy that Envoy lounge I've heard so much about, but I don't want to sit around for hours given that I'll be doing that on the plane for long enough.

Also, anything we should know about the airport and customs at FCO?

Thanks

Since you check in at the dedicated Intl. Terminal (A-West), and will have a dedicated Envoy line, 2 hours prior to flight time should be sufficient to get you checked in and also have some time to enjoy the lounge.

Otherwise, nothing else out of the oridnary. Just make sure you check any gels, liquids, etc.

We just returned from FCO. On the way over, from PHL we had no problems, we just checked one bag with toiletries etc., and carried on our rolling bags.
We allowed plenty of time in PHL, but really did not need it so we enjoyed ourselves in the Envoy Lounge. Upon arrival in FCO, customs and immigration went very quickly.

The return from FCO was a different story. We got to the airport at around 8:15AM. There was a line for a passport check, then an smaller line for Envoy check in. At this point we were told that we had to check our roll on bags in additon to the one we had planned to check. They were allowing only a small personal bag to be carried on as all bags were to be seached again at the gate. After check-in there was a long line for the X-Ray machine, but you could keep your shoes on. Then, as I mentioned, a search of all items carried on when you board at the gate. They were confiscating lipstick and subjecting women to a pat down search. The whole process took about 1 1/2 to 2 hours.

Thanks for the update. I am heading PHL-FCO on Envoy this Sun. I wasn't going to check any bags either way, but it sounds like I'll be forced to do so on the way back so it may be worth checking there and bringing the toothpaste :)
