I was just talking to Mary in the B club in CLT about WiFi in the clubs. I thought I would post what she told me.She told me the new management does want to get free WiFi. Apparently the old management signed a 8 year contract with T-Mobile. She said we are about 3 years into the 8 year contract. At this point they are trying to decide what to do about the contract. The deal they signed 3 years ago calls for no cancellations (which they got a really good deal for agreeing to)
I hope this info helps add a little understanding to the WiFi situation. At least it shows free WiFi is something the new management is working on.
Just as an FYI, PHX has two free WiFi options - the open to all travelers PHX Sky Harbor WiFi or the free US Airways Club WiFi.
I suggest that all of the folks in the locations that don't have free airport WiFi lobby your local airport board to get them in line with the more enlightened airports around the USA. Once you have an alternative to bypass the US Club's TMobile service (which I've found to be less than OK), then new negotiations will magically appear between the German telecom and US.
I wonder if their contract disallows all alternate internet access. I'd be happy with wired access.

A fun, or not so funny, note to this...
A good friend works in Sky Harbor and runs IT projects for them. He told me US Air wanted them to NOT place a wireless access point anywhere near the club since AmerWest was charging for wireless in the club... so Sky Harbor's IT purposefully placed one right next to the door just to spite them.
nice!

I loved the free WiFi at LAS and amazed my colleagues by pulling out my WiFi phone and making a free call to my family in Europe. Considering this was LAS finding something for free was pretty good, and soon they all wanted to call their families.
One of the disadvantages of paid for WiFi is that you have to log in through a web browser, and new equipment like my WiFi VoIP phone doesn't have a browser. I cannot tell you how nice it was to share a couple of words with my three year old before getting in the plane for 18 hours or so.

I don't ever remember having to pay for WiFi in America West clubs. Perhaps I didn't mind since the booze was no charge prior to US. :D

How do you get a username and password for the free US Airways Club Wi-fi in PHX?
Just ask for it when you come into the club?
I just used the other free one (for the whole airport) when I was through last week, but I did notice the other one for the club which required a username and password.

Last time I was in PHX, they had the info posted on a white board, and also available on little fortune-cookie slips of paper if you asked.

The username and password for the PHX club WiFi is usually posted on little stand-up placards on various tables in the clubroom. Might have to hunt for one a bit.
