I managed to avoid using the new website for a few months until today... I had to cave.
Anyway, I'm sure my question has been covered but the keywords I'm using in the search are too plentiful... How do we register for upgrades? Or is it automated?

It is definitly automated if purchased on the website. If not, I would call and verify you are in the upgrade queue. For US (WEST/HP) metal, I am always put in the Upgrade Queue without an issue... I have not flown EAST since the new website has been up.

I found that it wasn't automated, or at least I was impatient... :D
I called in 45 hours out after checking the web site and my email. Was upgraded on the spot over the phone. These were HP flights.
Regardless of whether it's automated or not, it doesn't hurt to call in to confirm.
Guess we'll see what happens this weekend on a six-seg to ORD (all HP).
Good luck OP!

Is there any way to check if you're upgraded on the new website? I called on last week and know I'm upgraded on my flight from PHL-RDU tomorrow, but can't tell if next weekend's trip to RDU (w/Companion) has been upgraded. Of course, I could check for differences between the two, but the website again refuses to display my website purchased ticket when I try to view it from Manage my reservations.....

I've always been able to check if I've been upgraded by looking at the reservation on the website--it'll show you if you're in coach or first class. I've found sometimes that to view the reservation, I can't do it from "Manage my reservations", but instead click on "My Trip" on the main page and type the conf. code there.

Apparently, the automated upgrade runs through once per day - so if seats are released mid-day, the upgrade queue will not be processed till that night. But, if you call during the day, you can be upgraded in before the list is processed (assuming you are within your window). So, if you don't get upgraded automatically, the call is well worth it.
Of course, YMMV.
