View Full Version : How bearable is the humidity?

It's a silly question I know. But my wife is an A/C worshipper and we constantly struggle over how low to set it.

We're heading to Barbados in a month and I've been watching the weather there. The Humidity makes Hawaii look like Phoenix. 80% constantly.

My question is -- how tolerable is it? I'm the outdoors type so I don't mind but my wife cannot stand walking two blocks and breaking into a sweat. My daughters, too. I just want to make sure they're going to be comfortable. We'll be doing a lot of beach activities, so I know we've got the ocean to cool down, but I'd like to hear just what some of you think of it. Especially you indoors-types ;)

Thanks in advance!

As a Canadian currently living in southern Taiwan where the humidity is also about 80. My wife and I always struggle with what is acceptable for both. My wife is Japanese so she is comfortable with higher humidity.

We have noticed that as long as we have the dehumidifier on we don't really need the a/c to cool us. So 30 degrees feel like 30 degrees not 40 degrees.

IMHO if you are going to choose the Carribbean as a vacation location, humidity is par for the course. :p

I'm not a big fan of humidity either, but I didn't find it to be uncomfortable in Barbados. Always very breezy. Less humid than some other places in the Caribbean, in my experience. Are you still planning to stay at the Hilton?

Thanks for the replies!

Yes, still on for the Hilton (award stay). Can't wait...seems the T-30 days is the longest wait for a vacation.

So outdoor and semi-outdoor activities -- shopping, horseback riding, harrison caves, outdoor dining, etc etc -- didn't make you or your significant others miserably sweaty?

My experience with the tropics tells me that staying within a couple miles of the coast will provide sufficient breeze to have a cooling effect. Interior locations are going to feel hotter and more sweat provoking.

No, not at all (I was there in June). BTW, didn't they finally close Harrison Caves?

The only places I recall in the carib that had reasonable humidity levels were the ABC's, a few small islands on the far east side of the Bahamas, and the t&c.
