My wife and I are planning to spend this weekend in Plymouth, MA, then next week in Boston and Maine. Can any of you suggest a hotel for Plymouth? I have a reservation at the Hilton Garden Inn, but I'll pass on the points if there are better places to stay. Thanks!

I recommend you stay out of on the cape, you arent that far in plymouth. Plymouth is great for a day trip but not all that exciting once you are there (they got rid of the one really great attraction, Cran-World). I recommend instead the nauset beach/coast guard beach area on the cape, near orleans!

I agree with Lehava. Plymouth would be a very loooooooong weekend unless you are really into the historical recreations of Plimoth Plantation and the Mayflower. But I have zero recommendation on the hotel. When I have done Plymouth with my kids, it has always been a day trip, and usually a short day trip. YMMV.

Yup...here's the tour...the boat....VERY overpriced quick tour, plymouth rock....small rock (we call it Plymouth pebble) sitting in the sand surrounded by a small pavillion (30 seconds needed at most), the wax museum is interersting, particularly for kids, oh and lets not forget plymouth plantation *yaaaaawwwnnn*, its your run of the mill "step back in history" village, one guy making bread, another beating metal. Not really even a good village. End of tour.

It's the kind of place you take kids so they can say they have been there, but you don't stay long (which is part of why there arent a ton of hotel choices).

Other exciting things to see nearby I would recommend more: the Bourne Bridge, Boat ride on Cape Cod Canal, the military base at the bridge, sandwich glass, the Christmas Tree Shop in Buzzard Bay, the shopping is nothing exciting but letting the kids see the windmill from the inside of the building is fun, even enjoy that as an adult, go whale watching, take a boat to one of the islands.

So much more to do than Plymouth

Thanks for the quick replies! We're going to stop over in Providence tonight, then make a "quick" stop in Plymouth on Saturday, head up to Boston for about 3 nights, a few days in Maine, then out to Los Angeles.

My wife has never been to Boston, and I've never been north of Boston, so we thought this would be a better alternative rather than burning 200k miles and flying through LHR this weekend. :)

Go the White Barn Inn in Kennebunkport for dinner. You won't be sorry. Say hi to George and Bar for us. ;)

Thanks for the tip! http://www.whitebarninn.com <<< Looks awesome, I'm going to call for a reservation for either Tuesday or Wednesday night. We're thinking of spending two nights (Tu/We) in Maine, but I have not decided where. The other idea was to go out to Nova Scotia, but the ferry I looked up (from Portland) doesn't run mid-week.

Making up a trip on the fly is kinda fun :D

White Barn Inn? I give out restaurant deals and you mention the White Barn Inn? It is fabulous, but clean out the bank account before you go. You can also take the ferry to Nova Scotia if you drive up to Bar Harbor, which is charming itself. Try to go to Acadia if you are up there. It is beautiful. Nova Scotia is very pretty, but a bit slow for me.
