Will be staying at the Westin Miyako in September and would like recommendations for a nearby Ryokan. I am aware of the Miyako Ryokans, but would like to try something else. Price range $200-$300 including meals.

Thanks!

I'm moving this thread to the Japan forum where I think you'll generate much more discussion.

Including meals? Slumming it, eh? The Miyako Japanese rooms aren't part of a Ryokan. They are just Japanese-style rooms. I like them quite a bit, actually.

My tastes in accommodations runs in a different direction, but here are a couple of links:

I followed your post to this site from the Starwood board. In our view, some of the best Ryokans in Japan are found in Kyoto. Our choice in the past has been Hiiragiya where we were treated exceedingly well: this property is well described in many of the guide books where we initially heard of it :p . The first time we stayed there, we had trouble finding the entrance which is on a side street. However, it may be well beyond the price range that you are suggesting.

Uhh, yeah. Like 400%! A wonderful property, but 70,000 yen per person.

Thanks, but out of the price range. We are travelling around the world for 4 months, so while that price would be fine for a one week trip, 4 months at that rate would be damaging both economically and emotionally :)

Good Ryokans in Kyoto are famously expensive. If you intend visiting other areas of Japan, I'd suggest staying in a Ryokan in another part of the country. You'll get a better experience for the money you're prepared to pay that way.

I'll stick with my usual rec of Kurama Onsen & Ryokan in the mountainside. Or one of the temple stays in northern Kyoto.

Ive only stayed at Tawaraya which is also more than the target price. However I have a friend who has stayed at one in Gion for much less. I cant remember the name but he said it was very nice and reasonably priced. I think there are less expensive ones in Kyoto, maybe the links above will help. Although Tawaraya I should add was stunning.

Having made a brief visit to Kurama (and learnt a little about mosburger here), this is on my own list of places to stay at as I very much want to return.

I think this is a fantastic suggestion!!!
