I've got a challenge to make plat which requires 22 segments from 6/7-9/7. Well, due to some work schedule changes, I'll have 21 segments. The catch is that the plat would only be good until 2/28/07 unless I earn enough miles by the end of this years to get plat the normal way, which isn't going to happen; I'm looking at about 55,000 miles/65-70 segments. So my question is...is it worth it to do a SR to get plat just for this year? The cheapest I can find is a $138 all-in same day BOS-PHL. Is the difference between plat & gold worth it for the short time? Thanks for any thoughts!

Well the question is are you going to use it between 9/7 and 2/28. If your flying a single long trip (mid-con, trans-con, etc.) or more I would say it's worth it.
Plat will definitely give you a good edge on upgrades.

Have you used the visa for the 25k spending = 10k preferred? Have you also used the Mastercard to get the same deal?

Yes and no. I don't spend $50k in a year, so getting both won't help. I do have the MC which will get me to about 65k miles.

Plat will be especially important next year, IMO, especially if they cut 10 seats out of the A321s. Gold upgrades on transcons will be close to nonexistent.

Are you doing the elite "trial" or a challenge (or are they the same)? I'm doing the "trial" and was under the distinct impression that you only needed to fly X miles/segments within 90 days to have status for the remainder of the year and all of the following (through Dec 07 or Feb 08). Did they tell you otherwise?
I guess in my case it's irrelevant - I'll have 78,000 miles (at least) by EOY - I just wanted the early jump on plat... :D
You might try calling in again on the numbers - I have been told different minimums by different employees (notably for gold and platinum).
In any case, good luck! As others have mentioned, the extra day's lead time on upgrades may make the difference between getting it and not.
