My apologies if this has been done to death, but search is not acting properly for some reason.

My desire is to purchase coach tickets and upgrade to Envoy class. As I understand it,

1. Buy a Y or B fare and upgrade on the spot (assuming inventory availability) for 20,000 miles r/t.

2. Buy a lesser fare and upgrade with 60,000 miles ... when? If I have no status, do I have to wait until the day of?

I'm reluctant to purchase tickets now for, say, six months out, and not know if we'll get upgraded until the day we fly.

Do I have the situation right? Is there any other option I should be aware of?

Basically your Y and B fare scenario is correct. *ONLY* M, H and Q fares may be upgraded for 30k one way.

No matter which of the above fare classes you have, your upgrade may be confirmed at time of booking *IF* inventory in R class is available. Hope this helps!

My wife has 40,000 miles in her account. Could she buy a B fare outbound (and upgrade it with 10,000 miles) and then get an M, H, or Q fare on the return, and upgrade that trip with 30,000 miles?
