Does anyone have some recommendations on how to get to/from the Las Americas airport into Santo Domingo? I'm arriving with just lightweight hand-held luggage and don't mind taking buses, if they're simple to figure out and you can get directions from information desks at the airport. I'm staying in the Zona Colonial and want to get there fairly quick, so if buses take hours to get you there I'll pass on that and do the taxi thing. So, how much is the typical taxi fare one way and how do you arrange that? I've read it's cheaper if you arrange and book in advance, but how do you do that as well? Is there anything the equivalent of Supershuttle from that airport? On my return I'm staying at a hotel that advertises itself as "just 10 minutes" from the airport, yet again they don't seem to have any free airport shuttle and they are a big chain. Is everyone a prisoner of taxis in this city and how do you make sure you're not being ripped off by them?

taxi's run a cartel at the airport and charge $20 into the city
if you can bargain hardline you may get them down to $15
i was there over memorial day
i bought my tickets via orbitz
and was offered a "super shuttle type" round trip hotel delivery for $25
$12.50 each way was the deal
(if you are single)
if not just pay the $20 taxi service

ps if you are 10 minutes from the airport - you re not in the Zona Colonial

to avoid being ripped off make sure you ask a price before you get in a cab
i have been there 4 times and have never been ripped off
