View Full Version : Clueless Amex Travel says "US isn't in Star Alliance anymore"

I booked a US Airways ticket yesterday through American Express' online travel site. Largely because the flights I wanted (a BOS-DEN departure connecting anywhere US would go but after 4pm) were totally invisible on the new USAirways.com site - but that's a different thread.

Anyway Amex' site had no way for me to put in my United 1P/Star Alliance Gold number. (Neither does the new USAirways.com site unlike the old one, but that's yet another different thread...) So I call up Amex's travel line, and get a rep to add it. She tells me that she cannot add it to the US Airways legs, only to the one leg that was a UA metal codeshare. "You're flying on US Airways, not United on the other flights so you can't use a United FF number." I tell her "of course I can, US and UA are partners on many routes and also are both in Star Alliance." She continues to say she can't. I inisist she get a supervisor.

She puts me on hold, then comes back on and says "I talked to my manager and we called US Airways. They said they don't take United numbers. And by the way, you keep mentioning Star Alliance. US Airways told American Express that they aren't in Star Alliance anymore because of the merger."

After I finished snorting with laughter I told her "of course they are, in fact if you go to their website you'll see the *A logo right on the bottom of the page." But she was insistent: "What American Express has been told about this is that US Airways left Star Alliance."

Morons. As I mentioned, I booked through a non-USAirways site because I couldn't get the flights on the airline's own site. I used Amex travel because it was $2 cheaper than Orbitz (lower fee?) and gave me double Membership Rewards. But how can a travel company like Amex be so clueless? I'm sorry, if you're a phone rep for a major online (and real-world) travel agency, how can you not know which domestic airlines are in which alliance? Wouldn't having that minimal knowledge of the industry be considered part of your job?

I finally gave up, called US Airways, and got a very helpful fellow who put in the UA number in the US legs, and gave me the actual United locator# for their leg. He also was very apologetic about the US Airways system making it impossible for him to give me seats in their elite zone even though I showed as Premier Exec/Star Gold right on his screen.

Call UA. They should be able to get you into E+.

Did that already, of course. I was on the line with the 1P line to get into E+ as soon as I hung up with US. The point is I shouldn't have had to.

The problems are:
1) US couldn't get me into US's own front-of-coach seating: "I should be able to put you in 6C but it's not letting me - I don't know why," said the US agent.

2) The selling travel agency, Amex, doesn't even know what FF programs are partners with US and lies about US's alliances or lack thereof. Amex's cluelessness is priceless.

3) Until a couple of weeks ago I could have bought this itinerary on USAirways.com, entered my UA MP#, and gotten E+/UA and Preferred/US seats without ever having to pick up the phone.

This is now almost as messed up as buying a seat on Delta.com and trying to get my NW Gold# into the reservation. The only reason I say "almost" is that at least with US, when I had to call them, I got somebody who was a native English speaker.

Call US, that should be the first thing you do. Never go thru 3rd party stuff. I bet if you got another agent they would have tried to force tell you that America West and US Airways are 2 seperate, non-affiliated airlines. (Was told that from the United Airlines operated by India resv center team, and they said "maybe in about 5 or 6 years, the 2 airlines may be partners LOL!, talk about owning a crystal ball. Heck, I should call them up and see which colleges I will get accepted in to, to not bother applying to too many :D !

While this is good, I still think my "Qantas doesn't fly to Australia" response from a phone rep last weekend tops this :D

btw-It may be an Amex branded/hosted site but it is powered by Travelocity and Travelocity agents answer the phone and it is they who are clueless. Not that it excuses the lack of knowledge.

Hmmm when I was in Denver a month or two ago, I needed to add my US number to my second segment (UA's EASYCHICKEN doesn't like connections and US DM #s...) anyway, she did it..and said, "It may be one of your last flights, since US is getting kicked out this month because of the merger" I thanked her took my Gold BP and laughed... oh well.. people hear alot of rumors.

Do what I do -- buy all your US tickets on UA's site. Works great (most of the time) when you use the advanced search and break-up more complex itineraries by the connecting cities. Your MileagePlus number will be on the record for all the flights, and you get an 016 ticket (UA's stock). Never had a problem getting credit on UA for my US flights with this method. You can even check-in online for these flights (on the US site when they are US-operated flights) and your both your MileagePlus status and Star Alliance status will print on the boarding passes. Best of all, no extra booking fees.

Well... if UAL's site would take my Air Canada number when I book US Air, I could get the preferred seats that way, but nooooooo, it won't accept it. (neither will US's new site)

That's almost as priceless as our AMEX-run corporate travel insisting I talk to the international desk for a trip to ABQ because, after all, it is in New Mexico.

I'm rubbing my eyes with frustration on your behalf. We get this all the time. UA have an outsourced Res centre in India, and we deal with their basic errors every day. It can usually be resolved in seconds with a call to US. Unless you get the Phillippines on the other end... when will airlines learn that passengers value highly-trained, in house agents and stop outsourcing to cheapskate overseas operators with little knowledge of their product...?
