Is there anyway to figure out which SBS bus routes have double-decker buses plying on them?

From my admittedly limited experience of Singapore's bus network, it seems to be a case of pot luck. We took a bus from an MRT station up to Changi Village a few weeks back - it was a double decker going out and a single decker on the return.

Not sure what the driver behind the question actually is, but you could always just wait at the bus stop and get on the first double decker that comes along :p

Can you be a bit more specific as to maybe where you'd like to go and maybe we can help you like that>?

Generally the double decker buses go to the HDB estates, and that is a sure way of catching one on. Some routes share double decker with normal buses, and some have the stretched ones. But unless I know where you are, I don't know which one to point you toward.

Is there a particular reason why you might want to know this information? Like what Guy Betsy said, if could be more specific, we would be able to give you better information.

Almost ALL services have a mixture of normal single deck and double decker buses (or bendy buses, depending on which bus company). There are however some routes which are exclusively single deck, and some which are double decker most of the time.

Everything you ever wanted to know about buses in Singapore and way too much more:

Route 2, for example, seems to use double-deckers a lot. But they're very common throughout Singapore, if you want to try one for the experience just stand at any bus stop outside an MRT station and wait a few minutes...

My nephew is a bit crazy about double-deckers. He has a limited transit time in SIN. I wanted to take him on a ride in one. If i knew which route had a double-decker plying, we would go straight to that bus interchange and get on it.

For sure we will visit either the Bird park or the zoo while in SIN. but beyond that, we have no plans.

We have about 6 hours in SIN, while transiting through Changi.

hmmm.... you're quite time constrained there - without delays it takes over an hour to get from the Orchard Road area to the zoo or Jurong bird park by public transport, so add another 20-30 mins if you come in from the airport on the MRT.

I'd certainly rate the zoo above the bird park (the latter looks quite tired) so if I was you, i'd get a taxi from the airport to the zoo, another taxi downtown then hop on a double decker for a few stops on orchard road before taking a cab or possibly the MRT back to the airport.

Swiss Tony, jpatokal,
thanks for the responses. both are very useful and the kind of information i was looking for. We will have about 11 hours at Changi. Arriving early in the morning 0600 and departing about 1700.

We may just skip the zoo or bird park, go have lunch some place and ride a bus en route.

This information is very useful for planning. Thanks again.

Legionnaire, I don't think there is any double decker bus that goes to Changi. What I can suggest is catching a train or taking a cab into town for some breakfast, then maybe a walk around, and the bus ride, and then train/cab back to the airport. Squeezing the zoo or the birdpark into the day is probably a bit too tight for comfort.

Why don't you consider taking the open top double decker hop-on/off tour buses? It's called HiPPOTours in Singapore, they are run by the same people that do the DuckTours (www.ducktours.com.sg). However, I can't seem to find a website for the HiPPOTours.

I had no plan of taking a double decker to/from Changi. Take the MRT into town to some interchange. Take a double decker from there for a short ride. Maybe to Orchard or Little India. Hop off, eat lunch. Find way back to an MRT station and head back to Changi.

If someone had a list of routes on which the double deckers regularly ply, i can try and work a plan around that.

Zoo/Bird park is an after thought and not a must. No point trying to squeeze too much into 12 hours.

Sorry, I thought you just had 6 hrs from arrival to departure. With that revised time frame i'd recommend the zoo (it is good) as your proposed schedule for Singapore looks rather "pedestrian" IMO.

Infact, if you went straight from the airport to the zoo, you'd be there in time to have breakfast with the orangutans :) and without wanting to preach, showing the young an endangered species (and a very funny one at that) will hopefully in the longer term impart a great deal more inspiration than being able to say he's been on a double decker bus in Asia...

I'd suggest going to Tanah Merah or Bedok by MRT, both just a few stops from Changi. Bedok has a huge bus interchange, while Tanah Merah has lots of buses passing it, including the aforementioned #2 service. Hop on board and it'll take you all the way across eastern Singapore through Bugis to Chinatown.

jpatokal,
Perfect. I used to live in Singapore a long time ago ('96-'98) and remember Tanah Merah and Bedok. IIRC those used to come between Aljunied and Tampines on the MRT line. No doubt SIN has changed tremendously since then.

Thanks to all who responded. I know the itin sounds a bit tame, but trying to keep some time free for any "mishaps" with the kid or if we need more time to eat etc. You never know.
