I've done searches and am pretty sure the only way to upgrade a trans-atlantic leg to Envoy is with US instruments, is this right? I assume miles or UA SWUs won't do and I'll have to trade them for US instruments (trying to do so here (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?goto=newpost&t=563206) ). Is that right? Thanks!

Yes that is correct! But, please remember that TA upgrades on US are quite random. They do not follow much of a system. For instance, in order to use a Chairman's Preferred upgrade you must first buy an upgradeable fare...which is usually $350 to $450 more than the lowest discount fare...then, your upgrade can not clear (subject to unbelievably excessive capacity controls, making upgrades usually non-available) until 7 days before departure. What all people I know have found is that it is an unethically ploy to extract an additional $350 to $450 from you without actually delivering an upgrade at 7 days.

Unfortunately V fares are non-upgradable. You could perhaps buy the fare up to M, H, or Q and then trade for 30K miles each for the upgrade or Y or B for 10K each. But you don't have much time.....

If your upgraded on the day of departure - is it THAT big of a deal?
