What's the easiest/cheapest way to get from KRK to VIE. I would like to go for a friend's B-day this September while I'm in Poland for 2 weeks. I would want to go so that I'm there the night of Aug 18th and 19th and otherwise spending very little time in VIE (not that I don't love the city, but I have a lot to show my friends in Poland :)). Thanks so much!

Best,

-W

(edited b/c I put Sept instead of Aug)

without a saturday night stay, flight on OS/LO will be expensive. train is usually a cheap solution in eastern europe, checkout connections at www.bahn.de

The old Saturday Night Rule no longer really exists for travel within Europe (it does for long-haul flights). I have just checked fares on Expedia and fares on OS are the same for mid-week returns as they are for staying over a Saturday night. Still not cheap, though - it's come up as GBP 129 on expedia.co.uk which is about EUR 188.

There is a direct trains from Krakow to Vienna that runs "not every day."

I'd recommend not booking until you arrive in Poland.

There are also a few bus companies that run efficient overnight busses from around the new bus terminal. Again, book in Poland

If you're flying on one of the *A carriers to Poland (LO, LH or OS), your best bet is to buy *A European Airpass. The minimum number of coupons you can buy is three, so you might as well pick a third *A city (MUC, PRG, etc.) before circling back to KRK.

Otherwise, the best land option is to get yourself to the Slovakian side of the border, board a hi-speed train from Poprad-Tatry or Kosice to Bratislava and then on to Vienna. There is also an hourly bus service from Bratislava bus station to Vienna airport.
