Wasn't the old P o'P award for shortest average segment? Or am I making that up?
In any event... note the drain on the balance and the relatively short haul flying (mostly PHL-NC, and a couple of MIA turns when AA was full).

Although if I ever get my flights from EWR/JFK to PHX on HP posted (I've given up) you can bump this nonsense up by 4 segs and sevreal thousand miles.
In the next two weeks I'm confirmed down and back to MCO twice (UGH) and over to FRA and back twice (Das UGHen) between now and June plus a number of little 500 milers.
I should hit Platinum no problem before I "pull out" and hit Silver on someone else for a buffer. I'm anti-AA because of their little soda selling experiment, so it's lookin' like CO. -sigh, EWR- (Although I'm anti-US in principle because of this f'ed up first-up before preferreds thing.)
And for all you laughing at my mileage balance, that's after 2 business tickets to HKT last summer on TG (180,000 mile drain), so I'm doing the best I can. I'm really hoping someone in the * alliance announces service to SEZ in the near future.

I have given up on US DM program two months ago. My miles have been to going to UA MP when I got a status match to Premier Exec. So I'll stay GP this year and be a SP next year. I have planned trips to qualify for Premier Exec for next year and hopefully even 1K when UA has some promotion at the end of the year.

We'd fly US more if there were any preferred mileage bonuses (makes me feel like I'm shopping a great sale & I make up reasons to fly as much as possible). Taking all of the other factors into consideration, I need a powerful incentive to keep booking travel on US. So far, I'm not seeing any indication that our revenue is wanted. Without bonuses to entice us, I think even silver may be out of reach now that there's not a soft landing.

Have some flights coming up on US over the next few months, but hoping to burn some miles to get them...however, I have surprisingly been stymied by low fares on those routes (cheaper than the the $0.01/mile I value my DM at--e.g. $250 for the 25k award).
So far this year, 8 RJ flights, a 737, and a 757, averaging 611 miles per segment. Apparently haven't gotten credit for two other segments on UA...or any online booking bonuses (not that they are preferred miles...)
Flying CLT-PHX next month. Seriously thinking of taking DL to make a statement. Not that anyone would notice...or care.

Quick note re: PoP competition this year: No bonus preferred miles for F or full-fare Y tix available to the PoP competitors, thus skewing down total miles and miles/segment.
(Of course, the lack of rollover will also constrain the status hopes of many a current CP...) ;)
I also move that those relying heavily on shuttle flights not be eligible for the top prize...free booze and good service on a mainline a/c doesn't exactly compare to the many competitors jetting about in CRJs, Embraers, and Dash 8's, hoping to be crowned the new PoP... :D

Hard to believe I could travel 49 segments and have earned just enough miles for a first class ticket.
Looks like I am not going to make Chairman's Preferred this year. I have been one for the past 7 years. Looks like I am one of the guys they want to keep out of the top tier.
To be honest, being Chairman's Preferred isn't much of a deal for me anymore. Of the 49 segments, 7 were on planes that had a first class section. I upgraded 3 out of 7 times.
My best bet is to chase down the best ticket deal now.

UA has about double that (both EQM and segs). When I get back to 80k in the account (drained it to nothing last year), I'm done with US. That might just get me to silver, might not. My biggest mistake was giving tempe any kind of chance--that 17k might keep me from moving up further on UA for next year.
In previous PoP competitions, I was averaging like 1800 miles/segment. This year has been skewed by a 500 mile hop (in reality less) into my nearest hub (CLT) to go anywhere.... And US gets very little of my longhaul business anymore.
For that matter, US is not getting my shorthaul business. As PersonalCareChemist alludes to, I rarely see a plane with first class seating anymore. On UA, I enjoy ExPlus. Which would I choose? Hmm.....

I'm probably up there with the prince of pain taking double and triple connections every week to increase segments. It's ridiculous, but a new Nintendo DS Lite helps. Why not get status on a plane vs being at home on the sofa. Currently Chairman...trying to earn at least Platinum this year. Since US 'upped' the # of segements to 120 for Chairman, I don't think I'll make it.
However, the last two years, around September, US announced that if you could make 18 segments before December they would upgrade you to the next preferred level. Let's hope they do it again this year. Not sure if the new management will run that special again....

I definitely will not be the prince of pain! The CP I was sitting next to yesterday PHX-PHL has already made 50 RTs SNA-PHL via LAS or PHX this year! He is over 200K as of the end of August! And I was feeling good about already requalifying and having another 30K booked through the end of September.

I may have been able to get Platinum by the end of year (CP was doubtful), but I have thrown in the towel and decided to start flying Southwest, as most of my flights are less than 500 miles. The rewards just seem to add up much quicker this way. Although I will fly at least 2 more segments on US to solidify gold.
On a sidenote...I took a $450 RT fare from PHL to HNL on ATA (now Southwest partner) over a $720 fare on US for Nov. Giving up potential first class and the double miles for CP on US, definitely a tough decision.

Wasn't Prince of Pain originally defined as closest to 500 miles/segment. I'm at 22,104 and 41 segments - 539 mi/segment. And lots of LGA-PIT 500's to go. Quite a jump from the (bonus-enhanced) 5,516 mi/segement of 2002(?).
After CP every year that it has existed, and Preferred Plus before that, it's down to Gold for me. I've moved US from a preferred airline to another here-to-there commodity provider for me.

As a former Prince or at least pretender, CPRich has it right, it was the award for those of us stuck on Dash 8s and RJ with the most segments and fewest miles.
Right now, I have 0 miles and 0 segments but that will be broken this weekend when I fly on US (HP metal) to SMF because it was the latest flight I could get because I want to see my son's soccer game this Sunday. Currently Platinum and looking for a way to use the miles in between all the soccer.

Making CP on RJ's should be enough to have one committed, let alone being called the Prince of Pain.... But at 539 mi/segment, I would certainly defer to you and others that have suffered... heck I hate the puddle jumps BUF-BOS and those are on ERJ... though I remember the days of the DASH...

I'm sitting on ~560 miles/seg this year over segments in the high 40s. Almost all since 9/1. About $.25/preferred mile YTD. I'm pretty much banking on the significant revenue and flying in the last third of the year to get a soft landing to plat. If not, I'll just trial elite my way back in a week or so.
As a side note, I'm using a spreadsheet I built to track all of this and predict status. Its quite similar to one I did for AAdvantage... if you search over there you'll find it on the same page as the AA one. I don't host the file, so if someone here has space, I'd be happy to share.

I too got a late start this year; didn't start flying until July (so January-June was very, very nice let me tell you). I've done a few transcons this year, which inflates my usual short haul segment mileage, and disqualifies me for the Princess of Pain category:
52012 miles and 65 segments, averaging ~ 800 miles/segment.
However, it would be accurate to claim that I am in the running for Princess of Pique. I have not--how shall we say it?--enjoyed the merger pains very much.
Realistically, it looks like the pace will stay the same through December, and I shall be a Platinum Princess next year.

Including bonus status miles from the US Airways Mastercard & elsewhere, my final EQM for the year is 92,158. I'll requalify for CP on segments.

Should finish the year with....
EQM's: 100,050
Segments: 69
(Unless I decide to make a quick trip up to NYC for Christmas)
Thats a little misleading though because I got an extra 10,000 preferred miles from BofA, I will take advantage of the double EQM promo for my last mileage run, and got a few class of service bonuses when rerouted and put in F manually.

I should be done my flying for the year, and I'm ending up just in gold category at 50889 miles and 28 segments, just pushing me over into GP for '07. Mine also includes 10,000 EQM from the US Mastercard and 1000 or so from FTD.
While my miles per segment was high, I saw my share of pain as most of the flights were transcons or transatlantic, and I don't think I managed a single upgrade other than one CLT-LGW segment upgrade to Envoy that I paid for. That was as SP so I'm hoping I'll do better on the transcon upgrades next year as GP.

I guess mine's been relatively painless compared to those of you at the minimums per segment...
122,479 miles
49 segments
-------------
~2500 miles per seg
The numbers are skewed thanks to the 10k EQMs for $25k deal, some CoS bonuses, and about 5k miles in the DM shopping mall and FTD. I think my BIS-only average is 2000 miles per segment.
I had two trips before July (for 9k miles), so a very active second half of the year...
I've talked to a few CPs this year who made it on segs at the 500 mark - I really feel for you all. One guy I spoke with lived in IND, worked near DCA, and found it was still cheaper to fly home and back each week than to try and move his family and buy a car. And his employer didn't pay for the flights...
There are lots of stories of people living near PHX and working near LAX, and I'm guessing there are a few of you that have far longer commutes - e.g. PHL-LAX, PHX-PHL, etc. on a weekly basis.

After burning Dividend Miles all year with no paid segments until October, I decided after getting my 10,000 Preferred Qualifying Juniper MasterCard Miles, I still had a shot at at least renewing my Silver status if I took a quick Mileage Run in addition to a couple of scheduled Q4 trips planned. So after checking fares, I asked my wife if she wanted to go with me to Amsterdam or Hawaii. She picked Hawaii, and I booked a quick 5 day/4 night trip from MCO to KOA for less that $1200 for the two of us plus hotel and rental car.
Unfortunately, the day before we were to return from KOA, my wife slipped and fell dislocating her knee. The paramedics rushed her to the local hospital where they set her dislocated knee, but discovered that one of the arteries through the knee had been crushed. Since there were no vascular surgeons available on the "Big Island" she was evacuated by Air Ambulance to Honolulu where she had one surgery to repair the artery and another to insert "pins" and an external fixator to immobilize the knee. Then she had approximately 3 weeks in the hospital before she was cleared to go home (in First Class ONLY due to the immoblized knee).
So I think I may be in the running for MOST EXPENSIVE MILEAGE RUN EVER! So far, the known expenses are running (in round numbers):
$25000 Air Ambulance (as submitted to our insurance)
$48000 Vascular Surgeon (as submitted to our insurance)
$560 Additional Roundtrip home and back for me while wife was in hospital
$1800 Upgrade to First Class on the rescheduled return trip from Honolulu for wife and me (at least they waived the change fees under the circumstances)
$800 plus 130000 Hilton points for various additional hotel nights for me
$50 for my flight from KOA to HNL
$150 additional airport parking at MCO
...and we are still waiting for the Orthopedic Surgeon, the Hospitals, and the ground ambulances, and other miscellaneous doctors to bill our insurance, but we are VERY fortunate to have the insurance we do to cover most of this, plus the follow-on surgery that will be needed at home.
At least my wife got in the four dives that she had planned before the mishap.
And, even though I had to cancel my other Q4 trips, with the extra roundtrip home while my wife was in the hospital and the upgrade to First Class on our return from HNL, I will in fact requalify for Silver. No way that it will have been worth it though.

Not even in the running with L4PI, but am at 117 EQS with one trip to go. Will finish the year with 121 EQS and just shy of 80k EQM for an average of 660 EQM/EQS. This is mostly since May 1 and did include 2 RT transcons (one on the fifty-cent fares to LAS that was upgraded at the the gate to F out and back) and one CLT-SJO-CLT; the rest is all short-haul East Coast. Have accumulated an additional 47 EQS with UA this year. Still debating whether to shift to UA in 2007 but may be able to attain 1K with UA and still requalify as CP with US. Revenue will probably not meet the threshhold for UA's UGS.
All for now.

By some miracle, I'm going to hold on to the plat I got through the trial elite:
78,509 EQM
71 segments
After being at 9000/18 in April, it wasn't looking so good. But I then got a couple of transcon trips, then 10k for the credit card, then a completely unexpected trip to ARN (typically, all of our department's flying is domestic), and finally specifically routed a December BOS-LAX through PHX both ways to take full advantage of the Double EQM promo. Yikes! I'm trying to take a couple of long trips in January, BOS-LAS for example, to get off to a fast start next year; we just need to the appointment to come through. In case anyone's curious, here's the complete breakdown of the EQM's:
52,940 (67.4%): Flights, counting segments under 500 miles as their actual mileage
8,808 (11.2%): Extra miles for segments under 500 miles
10,000 (12.7%): Credit card
6,600 (8.4%): Mileage under Double EQM promotion (BOS-PHX-LAX r/t, BOS-PHL r/t)
161 (0.2%): Miles for Avis rental under Everything Counts
