I have a meeting in Tysons Corner at 5.30 pm next Friday (or as close to 5.30 as I can get there :-)) , my flight arrives in IAD at 5.01pm - I'm guessing traffic will be pretty bad at that time of day so imagine it's best just to cab it there and back to the airport rather than getting a rental - yes/no?

The Airport Road has an exit to Tyson's corner, so you will hit traffic around Tyson's not before.
I would say it takes 20 minutes. So you need to run from the plane to the taxi line

get to the taxi - washington flyer stand through arrival and baggage area. it should not take more than 20 min or so. catching a tax should be the best option. it should cost around 25.00

Should be ok in F with carry-on, but you will have the people-movers to deal with so even if you are the first person off the plane, could easily be 15 minutes before you are in a taxi.
It seems like you are returning to IAD after your meeting - unless you are going to be at a hotel, you can't count on flagging down a taxi in Tysons. You should call one ahead or get the phone number from the taxi that drops you off.
Another (more expensive) option is sedan service. Its not outrageously expensive and might be worth considering, especially if you want to have someone waiting to take you back to the airport after meeting is over.

I agree with the other posters. Using the Dulles access road your taxi should make it to Tyson's pretty quickly, but it may be slow getting to where you want within Tysons.
WHat airline are you flying? If you come into "B" there is a moving walkway to the main Terminal, and if you fly US Airways it comes into the main terminal gates. It can take quite awhile to get a people mover to take you to where you are going, and at 5pm there will probably be a line for taxis, but they tend ot have plenty and it moves quickly.
Best of luck!

You'll be coming into D then (I believe AA has one C gate but I've only seen Miami flights leave from C). You'll need to book it to the people trawlers, although at 5pm they should be running every 5 minutes. That'll get you to the main terminal in less than 5 minutes if it doesn't have to stop for planes on the taxiway(s). When you get off the people trawler hang a left and follow the signs for baggage claim. Once in baggage claim follow the signs for taxis.

Going EAST at 5:30pm from IAD, you'll pretty much fly to Tysons at 65mph before hitting traffic on 7 once in Tysons. Make sure to have a good idea where in Tysons you're going - mistakes can be costly time-wise. That said, you'll spend more time getting to the taxi than in the taxi. ;)
