Pancakes were small, overpriced, and not very good. And the place is too small. Maybe it would have been better had they not been so busy, but if I spend $25 for two on four pancakes and a cuppa joe each, I expect a little more for my money. Cooking pancakes isn't rocket science.

For a chain restaurant, the "Country Griddle" pancakes at IHOP are pretty good - they have cream of wheat mixed into the batter. Sounds odd. I never woulda tried 'em if Ken Hoffman (the delightfully wacky writer for the Houston Chronicle) hadn't touted 'em so highly!

I've eaten at Pamela's, and at Dottie's True Blue. (In fact, I had the blueberry cornmeal pancakes that morning at Dottie's, and I remember them being good.) Fine breakfast choices, certainly. I can't really say if they've got the "best" pancakes. It's just not a common order for me. I'd probably more likely choose an omelette at most places. (If there's a house specialty, I might lean towards that. Otherwise, right now, I'm not in eating breakfast out mode at all.)
We have a branch of Original Pancake House in the area, but I've never eaten there.

Another vote for the ORIGINAL... I didn't even realize it was franchised until I checked out the website you posted and know nothing about the other locations.
We discovered it in Portland about 25 years ago while I was attending summer school in that lovely city. In fact I believe we saw one of the original owners (who has sinced passed away) in there more than once. It was well worth the 45-minute wait some Sunday mornings and we gradually ate our way through the menu. We've returned there every few years when traveling in or through Portland and the quality remains high AFAIK.

Many Four Seasons properties in North America serve lemon ricotta pancakes. Light as air, the tartness pairs well with the richness coming from the cheese. The tartness is also contrasts well with the maple syrup. Accompany with bacon for a heavenly breakfast after a restful night's sleep in their truly heavenly beds.

It's been probably 8 years since I've been to Monterey, but there was an out-of-this-world breakfast/lunch restaurant a block or two up from the bay that had wonderful fruit and wheat germ pancakes...the "blueberry germ" were my favorite. A must for any pancake lover is the restaurant at the DeLeon Springs State Park in Florida, north of Orlando. They give you the batter (various kinds) and you make them yourself at your table. Truly excellent pancakes.
Of all places, I also remember Alaska in general having very good sourdough pancakes. It seemed like many of the breakfast restaurants competed on their pancakes, with claims like using ancient "starter" and such. At the moment, I can't remember my favorite, but I don't think I've ever had a bad plate of sourdough pancakes in Alaska.

Just went to Griddle Cafe in West Hollywood. Very good pancakes, particularly considering how big they are (i.e., not too "bready"). How did I miss this thread? I whole-heartedly agree about the OriginalPanCake House!
We have one nearby in Plano - it's PACKED on Sunday morning's (our usual Pancake day, when we're in the mood for Carbs). Best bet is to get there around 9am - before the crowds get there. After 11am - it's usually a good 45-60 min wait for a table.
And the BEST pancake, if I recall correctly - is the one baked in the oven and lathered in butter... (mmmm)...
Had to google the site and get the description:
The pancake is called the "Oven baked". It's served with whipped butter, lemon and powdered sugar.
I can just feel my sugar levels rise thinking about it!

The previously mentioned "make your own" pancakes in DeLeon Springs is on my short list of places to hit, but I have not yet.
My favorite (sort of) local place is Breakfast Club in Orlando (Magnolia and Pine, I think). They have incredible banana crunch pancakes, and are quite reasonably priced.
My favorite place - ever - is Grove Cafe in Ames, IA. I can only say that the picture on this thread (http://www.roadfood.com/Reviews/Writeup.aspx?ReviewID=460&RefID=460) does not do the Grove pancake justice.

I'd have to put in my two cents and say Walker Bros. Pancake House in Wilmette, Glencoe and a couple of other Chicago locations. On the weekends, it is difficult to get in. I always remember seeing BJ Armstrong, Scottie Pippen and other Bulls there during the hayday of the Bulls. The other nice aspect of Walker Brothers is that in addition to having great pancakes (Apple Pancakes ala mode is to die for), the ambience is great too. It is beautifully done in light oak woodwork and furnishings.

But if you go, you HAVE to get one of the signature special dishes: the baked Apple Pancake, the Dutch Baby, or (my favorite) 49'er Flapjacks (thin, chewy sourdough crepes). The 49'ers are, IMHO, the best pancakes in the world.

Best pancakes are the ones I make with about 50% mixed blue, logan and blackberries (berries come frozen from Costco-fry pancakew with berries frozen on non-stick grill with some butter, serve with real maple syrup). Don't forget the fresh Peet's coffee.
But, if you want to go commercial, Walker Brothers', as mentioned above is the absolute best. Coffee served with whipping cream, wonderful, old Chicago ambiance--old stained glass windows from demolished buildings--and those amazing apple pancakes, originally invented in German to serve as a hearty meal during lent. I go everytime I am in Chicago.

My vote goes to the Tasty Crust restaurant on Mill St. in Wailuku, Maui, Hawaii. They only do buttermilks, but the things are plate-size and just melt in your mouth (you do get maple syrup and butter with them). Great thread idea...but I can't think of any in the Northern Virginia area! I want to say the Barnside Diner on Little River Tnpk, they are pretty decent. Can any NOVA people possibly suggest anything else?

I did not read through the entire thread so if this was already mentioned, I apologize, but,
I just saw a re-run of "VEGAS" or whatever the show is called, and the boss casino (James Caan) invited his cousin to the best pancake house in Vegas for breakfast. Let's just say the pancakes were not.......... :D
I just wonder if that's true???

I guess you must have missed the link to the ORIGINAL PANCAKE HOUSE (http://originalpancakehouse.com) suggested SEVERAL times earlier in this thread. Their recipes contain only the very finest of ingredients, such as 93 score butter, pure 36% whipping cream, fresh grade AA eggs, hard wheat unbleached flour, and their own recipe sourdough starter. Their batters and sauces are made fresh in each restaurant’s kitchen.
The Northern Virginia location is at:
370 West Broad St.
Falls Church, Virginia 22046-3319
703-891-0148
There are also locations in the Washington, DC area in Bethesda, MD and Rockville, MD. All are consistently excellent. Have NEVER EVER had a bad meal at any of their locations. Try the 49'er Flap Jacks!

These are great all great suggestions - if you live in Chicago or the west coast.
Does anyone know where to get great pancakes in mundane states like Virginia, Pennsylvania or Maryland?::confused:

The OPH locations I visited most recently (Bethesda, MD & Edina, MN) both accept credit cards. The only one I have been to that did not was in Chicago.

Glen Junction in Glen, New Hampshire. Thin and slightly crispy around the edges, big as a dinner plate: with real maple syrup...heaven!!!!!!!!!

The ORIGINAL Pancake House (http://www.originalpancakehouse.com/)
All items made from scratch, high quality and a premium price, but well worth it.
...made with PEANUT OIL.

Hate to say it, but I'm very skeptical of yeast-based pancakes; it's OK for some kinds of waffles, but for pancakes - the leavener (if any) should definitely be bicarbonate.
Personally, I'd say the best pancakes I've had are still home cooked - fresh picked blueberries (the small, tart New England wild ones from behind my family's summer cabin) in the batter are something I've yet to come close to beating :)

We got three orders of pancakes (for two people). The 49'ers were excellent--kind of crepe-like, but slightly chewy. Very nice and light, and we would definitely go back for them. We also tried the baked apple pancakes--I didn't particularly care for them; too much like a burnt apple pastry. The wife got the wheatgerm pancakes. Those were interesting--they tasted kind of like challah. One other nice touch is that they have fresh squeezed orange juice too.

Ah yes, I know that place. Never been there, but driven by many times. I might have to check it out.

I love PJ's in Princeton. It was burned down in the late 90's (I think it was early 1997). I recall driving through Princeton and seeing the fire trucks: sad. They rebuilt the place and preserved one, scorched booth as a memento.
Yes! I second PJ's in Princeton, New Jersey. I grew up in the area, and love the downtown area. PJ's is the place to take parents when visiting their kids at college.
Glad to see it back up and hopping as usual.

IIRC they had a really abysmal health inspection rating for a while--if that's improved, it's worth a trip. Went there the morning of my brother's wedding and all of us groomsmen had the chocolate pancakes...it's a wonder we didn't doze off during the ceremony. :D
I hope so too...'cuz Pancake Pantry in Nashville is too awesome. Sweet potato pancakes + side of bacon or country ham + hot black coffee = Heaven on earth  Definitely worth standing in line for if you have to!
