I got the latest LY Matmid newsletter and it says that they have launched their Flyweb inflight Portal. In the newsletter it says "Free (chinam) surfing in El Al's Flyweb portal."

When I click for more details it says "Cost for the service will be determined by the service plan selected, ranging from $9.95 to $26.95."

Anyone understand what the deal is?

I believe that you are allowed to browse through El Al's portal and links -- which are only ads for El Al -- at no charge. If you want to go anywhere else on the internet you have to pay.

Two very important points to keep in mind:

1. If you are in Coach you will have no way to recharge your battery.

2. Very few planes have this yet. I believe it is restricted right now to two or three which fly to the US.

A few months ago your point would have been spot on. Suprisingly ELAL have kept their promise of an aircraft a month (744/777 of course) for installation.

So as far as i'm aware these were the dates of the following installations

ECA - 777 - 07/2005
ECB - 777 - 09/2005
ELC - 744 - 10/2005
ECC - 777 - 11/2005
ELA - 744 - 12/2005
ELB - 744 - 02/2006
ELD - 744 - 04/2006
ECD - 777 - 10/2006

So it seems on ECD is waiting for its upgrade.

I think ECB missed it.
I know for a fact that all the 744 plus ECA and one more 777 have them.
At most only 2 more 777 need to be installed with it.

ELD does NOT have it yet.
So, for the 744's, 3 have it.
For the 777's, only ECA has it.

4x-ELD HAS Flyweb since March 29.
You are right though that the only 777 to have it is ECA.

LY002 JFK-TLV on 7/7 was on 4X-ELS - a 744 that did not have the service. It also did not have the El Al livery on it - only the "El Al" name and a blank white tail.

ELS is a leased plane and is not going to be getting it. From what I understand, its leaving the fleet in the Fall in favor of a 747-300.

Personally, I avoid ELS like the plague. . . forget about the lack of internet; there's only 24 seats of C - ZERO chance for an upgrade.

I didnt mention ELS because it was leased and I just thought it ws obvious that LY would not invest so much in installing on an a/c they plan on returning it this year.

Actually - ELS has the best J class seats. They are the old SQ raffles class seats. Lie angled.
I think they have 26 business class seats, two more than in the uppper deck of the other 744's.

Has anyone got any experience with it? How good is it? is it reliable? Do you stay connected or does the service crash a lot?

I've used it often and haven't experienced any problems with it.

It a shame that they might stop the service soon because Boeing is interested in selling the system.

Boeing Weighs Sale or Closure Of Connexion Internet Venture
Aerospace Giant Contacts Commercial-Satellite Firms And Other Potential Suitors

By Andy Pasztor and J. Lynn Lunsford, The Wall Street Journal, 890 words
Jun 22, 2006

Boeing hasn't disclosed how much it has invested in Connexion since the venture was first announced in April 2000, but people familiar with the situation say it is about $1 billion. Because of the lack of interest among U.S. airlines in outfitting their fleets with the system, some satellite-industry officials say Connexion may be worth no more than $150 million today.

I use it all the time. There is an occassional drop in satelite communication - but it quickly comes back. Very good service. I think it helps El Al compete.

Indeed. I took LY002 to TLV over the Continental flights specifically because I was told that all El Al 744s have the service. Imagine my frustration when I boarded a plane that El Al was just renting. No internet connection, horrible IFE system, and a disabled air-phone system. The plane was also showing its age. I hope that I don't experience 4X-ELS again.

Let me guess, it was LY's Sales that told you this...?
Indeed I can understand you being upset if your decision to fly LY was based on this only.

Imagine my frustration when I boarded a plane that El Al was just renting.
Was it rented from Avis-rent-a-plane? ;)
In the world of aviation, it is called leasing, not renting.

Will the 767 flights (MIA) be getting the wireless technology?
