Looks like she just came out of the paintshop. Hope they didn't pay much for this...the PSA job was much more original. At least it got a VJ tail number.

It is a nice try, but the original Allegheny paint is on a Mad Dog, and the new one is on an Airbus. The Airbus is a stubby little thing, and thus the sweeping wider blue line looks abbreviated.
If they were serious about it, they would have added the brushed silver bottoms that Allegheny used to have, but the maintenance for a single silver bottom would have been a problem, I'm guessing.
Still, you have to congratulate Doug and the folks in Tempe for the effort to remember and memorialize the old marques.

I agree. It was a nice attempt...if just the color scheme.
BTW...to my knowledge Allegheny never flew the Mad-Dog...their T-tails were mostly DC9, BAC111, and a few 727's.

You can't do a brushed "silver" (bare aluminum) bottom on an Airbus because there's too much composite down there.

Your right, the wider blue line does look abbreviated. Why did they choose to paint the heritage livery on A319's anyway? I think they would look better on bigger planes like an A321 or a 757. If they chose on of those then maybe the folks out west would have a chance of seeing a PSA plane land at SAN again :)

It just goes to show you how much prettier dc-9s are than the beluga whale-looking airbuses.

Definitely! The ones NW has that got their new livery look awesome. Plus the 9's shake more plates in the cabinet on a take-off than a wimpy 319...which is totally cool

I think it has to do with how long they plan on that airframe being in their system. They wouldn't do this to a 737 because that frame probably will be gone in a few years. Plus, reserving the largest planes for the US livery is a marketing ploy to present a true "big iron airline".

Actually the 319 does make it to the west coast once and a while as I have flown on it from time to time.

Oh I know. It just seems it would look better on a bigger aircraft and would have a better chance of more west coast routes. I understand they want to promote US Airways, but were only talking about 4 planes here and it still says US Airways on it. They dont seem to have a problem painting a Star Alliance livery on bigger planes. Oh well, I guess we should be happy they are doing heritage planes at all :)

Yes it would look better say on the 757 since those are going to be sticking around for a while. I really wish the Piedmont aircraft was going to be on a 767 since that is where US got the 767's from

The 319s make it out to the West Coast from Pittsburgh. They're assigned to PIT-LAX/SEA/SFO/SAN runs. Unfortunately, most of those flights are at night :(
We'll have to wait until the certificates are merged to see 'em on PIT-PHX-SFO.

I think that they should have choosen the 757s as well, except I don't think the PSA smile would have looked very good on the 757. So I guess the 320 or the 321 would have been the next most logical choice.
Regarding the 767 and the Piedmont livery, agree 100% ^

That would be nice to see. Unfortunately, the Piedmont livery will go on a 319 as well. It appears that N744US (http://www.airliners.net/open.file/0347176/L/) is the lucky one to get the livery, and will become N744P. It should hit the system around 4/27/06.

Saw the Allegheny Airlines Livery at PIT parked in the B concourse at Gate 38 yesterday afternoon. Not too impressed as the original Allegheny livery was pretty basic and this version watered it down even more. Unlike the PSA livery this is barely noticable. Definitely give credit to US for doing this though. very cool idea. Some of my first flights ever were on Allegheny in the 70's. This is probably the first Allegheny logo seen at PIT since, I guess, the early 80's. Anyone interested in seeing a USAIR heritage livery from the 80's?? I didn't think so. :D

Word late last week is that you and virtually every other person out there who actually remembered the old AL planes thought the same thing. Therefore, HP/US has made the remarkable decision to make repaint amendments to this a/c in a few weeks. Hard to imagine --- as you know, they ended up rebolding the PSA smile on the first heritage a/c since it was just way too thin.
As much as I really like this airline nodding to its heritage, I am dismayed that they seem to have missed the mark on each of the two a/c launched thus far.
In any case, now the PS plane is fixed and in a few weeks the AL plane will be. With any luck, they'll not screw up the PI plane.

Does this mean that the real name of AL was Allegheny? I thought the real name was Agony and they just didn't know how to spell it? :D

^ Wow. I am totally impressed with their attention to this. Not only did they create these heritage planes, they are actually attempting to get them as close to accurate as possible. The repaints = time, effort and money. Way to go US. I'd love to see the PSA plane at some point as it is totally unique.

Wednesday must have been Retro Livery Day at LGA. While waiting for the 400p LGA-BOS shuttle, I saw both the PSA and the Allegheny. The Allegheny was flying US 259 LGA-PIT-SAN. The PSA was departing around the same time; it may have been the 300p LGA-BOS shuttle.

Shouldn't the PSA one be doing the run to SAN and the Allegheny one staying back east? :p
(I know, they're not going to worry about that kind of thing.....)

They're repainting them anyway with the new livery, so I don't think paint costs were an issue.
