you could do neither and just fluff the account with "activity". for example, a prior poster brought up points.com (http://points.com/join/c?c=0505-99015-017) where you get 100mi for free.

1) fly on star alliance and have the points credited to your us account
2) check if they participate in idine or rewards network and eat at a restaurant
3) shop at the us airways mall
4) stay at a partner hotel and take the us miles option
5) get the free credit card, gets your miles up to 40k , then trade them for something that you want
