I was wondering if it's possible, now that HP and US have merged, to credit miles when flying on America West to United? I'm planning to get my mom the cheapie SJC-FLL fare on HP (something like SJC-PHX-PIT-FLL) and the flights are marketed as HP (they cost a lot more under the US code). My mom has a United account, not a US account - can she credit the miles to that account?

From the merger site:
As a Dividend Miles member, will my Star Alliance benefits be affected by the merger?
No, your Star Alliance benefits will remain the same. You can continue to accrue and redeem on Star Alliance member airlines. However, at this point United Mileage Plus members are not able to earn or redeem miles on flight segments operated by America West.

Thanks for the quick response - does this mean that if the flight segment is operated by USAir but marketed as HP, it is possible to get UA miles on it?
Is there a way when booking or checking in to specify that different segments be credited to different FFPs, and is it reliable?

Yes you can earn UA miles on HP flights operated by US.

I don't think that you can accrue the miles flown on an AW OPERATED flight on UA yet. I have been trying to do this all year and have yet to see any miles that I have flown on AW post to my UA account and I have seen the US OPERATED miles from the same ticket post and I have purchased the tix both using AW website and US website.
Also, I called up about this ? a couple of months back when I saw that it wasn't posting and they said that you could not do this yet.
Just flew one last night/this morning though, so we shall see if the policy has changed yet this month, since they broke their code share with other airlines on 3/31

Just to clarify, my response:
If your flight has an HP number like HPXXXX BUT is OPERATED by the old US (US flight attendents, US pilots) you WILL earn UA miles.

you will not earn anything on flights operated by HP. it's pretty much as simple as that.

Argh that sucks. I'm a UAL FFer. So if I buy my flight from US and a part of that multi-leg trip is operated by AW then I won't get miles for the flight even though I'm on a US itinerary?

For the moment, UA miles cannot be accumulated on HP-operated flights. I believe that it's a system issue that HP is working to resolve.

And according to the representative that I spoke with, if a flight is branded as US Air but is operated by America West, then UMP members will get the RDMs & EQMs along with the associated bonuses [if any apply].
This is great news for flying to Las Vegas from Seattle as United has NO direct flights but US Air (Operated by AW) has plenty, and they're cheap!

Can anyone confirm this? If this is true, it would be great! About 75% or more of HP flights can be sold as US flights.

for the most part, if you're flying through LAS or PHX, you're probably on HP. if you're flying through PHL, CLT, or PIT, you're probably on US. it's confusing, i know.
and yes, can anyone confirm that you can get miles on something branded as a US flight but operated by HP?

Can anyone confirm the news in Post #10.
If not, is it only United that is affected? In other words, has anyone successfully assigned miles from an HP-operated, US-branded flight to another *A program, such as ANA? Thanks.

America West is not a member of the Star Alliance - thus, Star Alliance FFP miles cannot be earned on HP-operated flights.

Well, I was going by the FAQ at http://www.usairwaysinfo.com/usair/content/frequent-flyer/faqs.aspx
Q:As a Dividend Miles member, will my Star Alliance benefits be affected by the merger?
A:No, your Star Alliance benefits will remain the same. You can continue to accrue and redeem on Star Alliance member airlines. However, at this point United Mileage Plus members are not able to earn or redeem miles on flight segments operated by America West.
Which makes it sound as if United is singularly affected. But I'd like to hear personal experience.

My cynical view - HP is a USA-centric airline and operation, and doesn't think about international things like someone in the US holding SQ or ANA status and accounts. So I'd wager they should have said United MP (or any other *A member other than US)do not earn/redeem etc...
I can't wait to earn MP mileage for hP flights however.

that should happen when the FF programs merge. apparently, that's supposed to happen this month. but given the track record of this merger, they probably mean somewhere closer to 2009

I have several flights this summer where my connecting flight is on MESA dba
America West Express. They have a US flight number.
Will I be able to get UA miles for these? If not will I be able to get UA miles for my other segments and US miles for these?

Hopefully you should be fine this summer. I just flew PHX-LAX and LAX-LAS on HP and the club attendent at both PHX and LAX confirmed that I couldn't credit HP flights to HP but that I should be able to next month. I ended up crediting them to US just to make sure I got credit for them, although I sure would have preferred to send the credit to UA.

I'll give you the full, unequivocal answer at the end of June when this flight takes place. I booked a United Flight that is code shared with US Air which is then operated by America West. This type of ticket can be bought over the Web, but you'll need to call United Reservations to finish the process as a paper ticket needs to be created and sent; no electronic tickets for this type of fare.
The paper tickets arrived in the mail and it shows that it's a United flight code shared with US Air. Seems all good to me so far!
The only bummer in the process: The America West branded flights had 1st class seats going for a little more than what I paid for economy. I called up and asked about purchasing a US Air branded 1st class seat at the America West price, but [as they would say on Little Brittain] "Computer says 'No'" *cough*.

You can upgrade space available to 1st class within 30 hours of your flight with the Go First Program (http://www2.usairways.com/awa/content/travelplanning/envoyfirst/gofirst.aspx) for $50-$250 depending on distance flown.

As of TODAY, the US Airways website STILL states:
At this point, United Mileage Plus members are not able to earn or redeem miles on flight segments operated by America West.
When THAT webpage changes and says the exact opposite, I will give my MP number for credit on flights to/from LAS and PHX from DCA. Not a minute earlier. Instead, I will give them my DM number. One of the main problems is that FlightFund and MP numbers share the same 11-digit numeric format and HP computers treat an MP number as if it was a FF number. Hence, the miles either "vanish" or get credited to a FF account. With the conversion to US software, that will change.

Huh? Aren't they are getting rid of Sabre (old US) and keeping Shares (HP)?

Well it looks like you now can fly HP & credit to UA MP. Please see this milepost for details:
Like the HP flights weren't crowded enough... I see SNA-PHX and SNA-LAS being affected by this change... ::sigh::: :)
Another thing, I think the new US needs to separate the FF's like the old US did... Zone 1 *GOLD, USGLD, USPLT, USCP, Zone 2: * Silver, USSLVER, Credit Card Masses... Zone 1 is getting ridiculous in PHX... :(

I have an HP ticketed, HP equipment operated flight tonight that I will have my MP account number attached to. Based on responses from the US and MPSCs, I expect to get full credit for these flights posted to my UA account.
I will post back next week (if not before) to indicate whether the flights post properly.
<I only use the HP code because they were originally ticketed before May 20 through HP, and the flights are being operated under the HP certificate>

Flew PSP-LAS and LAS-MCO on Tuesday night. Had originally made reservation with HP FF number but changed at the PSP ticket counter to my UA 1K MP number after reading some of the posts above.
Miles posted today in my MP account showing HP flight numbers, but I received only actual flight mileage, no FC bonus (purchased F) or 1K bonus as has typically occurred with US flights. Hoping these will show up later.
Any other experiences out there?

Tried calling HP to enter in the MP number in advance of the flight (a couple times) - they still gave me the "huh"? So, hopefully better luck at the gate...
lesson - for now, avoid calling HP to enter your MP number.

Ditto for me for a flight I took last week. The agents at the gate happily (and successfully) punched in my MP #. The miles posted a few days after my return flight.

Oh, I should also say that for some strange reason, the HP gate agent gave me a free upgrade to first class on the way back. There was an extra seat in that cabin and I was traveling as Star Alliance Gold (have Premiere Exec. status on United). Nice touch to end a great weekend in Vegas!
