Hello everyone, this is my first post to this site which I've been enjoying for several months now. Amazing how much information there is here!

Anyway, I'm visiting Chicago in May and would like to visit some reggae clubs. Can anybody recommend some? My preference is a hot DJ over live music if I have a choice (heard there's several good ones). Thank you!!

Here is an old stomping ground of mine, I am ashamed to say I haven't been for quite awhile. :(

Exedus and Wild Hare are both in the same neighborhood, Wrigleyville. Check out this website the week before you go.

If you're looking for DJ's rather than live reggae bands, I would have directed you to the Lava Lounge in Wicker Park. Unfortunately, this club just closed its doors on March 30th but is scheduled to re-open again in Fall 2006 in a different Wicker Park location.

That said, check out Sonotheque at 1444 West Chicago for dancehall on Sunday nights. This is a fairly new club/lounge with a state of the art sound system. Here's a rundown from the Sonotheque website (www.sonotheque.org):

COOL & DEADLY DIGITAL

A night celebrating the most soulful and funky sounds from Jamaica featuring reggae, dub and dancehall with DJ Rikshaw Doors open @ 10pm DJ Rikshaw: Chicago dancehall doesn't get the kind of exhaustive exposure that the local house and hip-hop communities do, but that doesn't mean fans of the genre are any less dedicated. Case in point: DJ Rikshaw, founder of the infamous Deadly Dragon Sound System, who has promoted reggae and dub in the city for a number of years, championed the styles long before it was fashionable to do so. Now, with this well-respected residency at Sonotheque, a loyal following of committed dancehallers turn Sunday night into one of the most unique and reliable parties in the city. Expect fractured riddims, drink specials, and surprise guest DJs.

if i recall correctly, and it's been a long time, wednesday nights at Exedus club had some hot dancehall jugglin 'till 4am that was wicked! other nights were tamer or leaning more toward live music.

back in that day, there was a dj named Dub Marcus who also had a radio show. not sure what happened to him.
