Does US match fares from other airlines? I was looking at PHL-LAS and US wants $440 while Southwest offers $199. At these prices it would pay to try someone else. I would rather fly US. I live in NJ and JFK is near so JetBlue is an option.

US, at their discretion, matches fares. But, in no case will your prompting them to do so make any difference whatsoever, so don't waste your time.

Years back, all airlines matched other carriers' fares when a customer could accurate point out a lower fare. Those days are LONG GONE.

If US wants to match, they'll match. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't.

Additionally, make sure you check AmericaWest.com for the same fare may price out differently there.

Since I don't know your timeframe, the following may not be helpful, but here goes...if you are asking whether you call US and say "I've found this same fare on WN for $199, will you match?" I think that sbtime answered that question, and I won't repeat that here.

On the other hand, if you have some flexibility with your travel plans and/or do not have to book right away, you may find that the fare will change within a few hours or so. As you probably know, most of the airlines make massive changes to their fares daily at 1:00 a.m., 5:00 p.m. and at least once more, usually between these times. Some airlines change their fares on specific routes even more frequently.

My advice to you, if you want to fly US, is to keep checking - at least a couple times a day, if you have the time. If a competitor is offering a lower fare on the same routing, often the fare will change. Sometimes, it won't. Good luck.

A few years ago I decided to try to call the CP desk and ask them about an price match. I was going from NY to LAX. Leaving at about the same time on the same days these were the approximate fares and routings:

US: LGA-PHL-LAX- RJ or Dash 8 to PHL, 2 class service to LAX - $2200

United - JFK-LAX - Three class service on 767 - $420

AA - JFK-LAX - Three class Flagship Service on 767 (I think, widebody in any case) - $320

I told them, look I really want to fly US, but you have to be kidding. They said there was nothing they could do. This was when I was just trying AA. I got done early and they confirmed me on an earlier flight with no charge on the cheap ticket because I was a Platinum (comped). Got me home a day early with no charge for the standby. Between my wife and I we spent over 20 grand on AA last year as my secondary carrier. Probably not more than 10% of that on US. Oh well.
