I have a credit file that is getting close to its expiration date. If I use the credit to book a flight and then cancel that booking, will I wind up with a new credit file with a new expiration date or will they revert to my original (and now short) date?

More importantly, is there a fee for using the credit to book or cancelling the new booking?

Try calling WestJet and asking if you can pay a fee to extend it by a year. I seem to recall hearing about being able to extend it by a year, but they take $40 or something off of the amount of the credit.
