Any special suggestions on things to do in Gothenburg (Göteborg, Sverige)?
Looking for something besides Liseberg, Feskekörka, Kronhusbodarna, Nya Elfsborgs Fästning, or Läckö Castle.
Any great neighborhood places to eat, places to dance (near the university?), or other interesting places to see / things to do, or other 'local' secert places?
We may be there for a couple weeks with my wife in the early autumn.
Thank you in advance for any helpful ideas or suggestions.

Gothenburg is my absolute favorite city in Sweden. Speak fairly fluent swedish but have never really liked Stockholm for various reasons. Please try the famous local shrimps in your preferred way at least once while you are there.
You could try fiskekrogen ( http://www.fiskekrogen.com ) for some of the finest fish and seafood in Scandinavia.
Another place for great fish and seafood is Wasa Allé ( http://www.wasaalle.se ) founded by some folks from fiskekrogen. Sushi and more Swedish fare in a nice mix. Expensive.
Then there is Hos Pelle ( http://www.hospelle.com/ ) for a still strong on the fish menu but less purist than the two previous places. And not cheap either. ;)

I don't know any secrets but I go there a lot for work. The taxis are really expensive but the public transport is good. You can take the ferry out to local little islands. It's all part of the transport system. There is good shopping ( H&M is awesome) and everyone is friendly. The soccer games are great.
I'm going Sunday so if that jogs anything else in my memory I will post.

Going with my son's soccer team to a tourney in July 2008. The boys will be in dorms but the parents need hotel rooms. Can anyone recommand a nice clean (and not too expensive) hotel?

That would be the Gothia Cup they're going to then? The worlds biggest soccer cup.
Quality Hotel on Hissingen used to be a Ramada.
Opalen is blocks away from the main soccer stadium.
Hotel Liseberg on Heden is walking distance to everything. Heden is also one of the places where the matches will be held so that would be convenient.
(I worked at all three in my youth)
The city center has tons of hotels. Gothia Towers is a very good hotel.
It all depends on what your budget is.

Läckö Castle is nowhere near Gothenburg. It's about a 2 hour drive north to get to it.
As for special things to do. Ostindiska museet near the shopping mall down town. The casino in the harbour. The Gothenburg Opera house is VERY good, (although I hate the building and love the old they used to have). Nefertiti Jazz club very close to Sticky Fingers rock club and not far from Feskekörka (to give you an idea).
Hit the running tracks by Delsjön.
Go south to Tjolöholms Slott. It is beautiful.

(I grew up in Gothenburg, right across the street from Liseberg.)

And of course it is the home of the Volvo. If you are in the market for a new car? Wonderful packages from the US including airfare, hotel, a factory tour, a couple weeks to use the car there, and then shipping it home. And the total compares favorably to just buying the car in the US.
