Well all,

I went ahead and tried out the skylofts at MGM grand. I must say it is by far the BEST hotel suites I've stayed in, and I always stay at nice hotels.

First off let met say I booked through my Amex Cent card for a 1bedroom suite. I was given a 2bd room suite for the stay as an upgrade. My nightly rate was $720 but considering the upgrade it was well worth it, since that room can get upto 2500/night.

To start: we were picked-up at the airport in a Maybach 62, the hotel seems to have all employees hooked up on these earpiease-walkie talkies, even the driver had one. Once we got to the hotel, I got out of the car and my concierge rep greeted me and walked me into the building and through the Skyloft lounge area into the private elevators to our floor into the suite. There were many (what looked like security guards) around the halls. We went into the room where my butler was waiting for us and had a specialty drink (canalope juice). I signed the docs and we were than orientated by the butler on the room's technology features.

The suite was HUGE, around 3,000sqf with a pool table room, 2 living areas, 1 dining room, 1 media room with huge flat screen, 2 bedrooms, 2 and 1/2 baths, a bar area and a coffee area. Room was very clean and the furnishings where as if it was almost new, along with the walls, carpets etc..

The only thing I DID NOT LIKE was the actual MGM Grand hotel. The skyloft hotel is perfect but putting it in the MGM grand was the BIG CON. The MGM Grand's services on the main level such as entertainment. restaurants and overall environment. It's to bad to be honest. I think Skyloft's really overlooked that issue. It would of been a better idea to place the hotel in a 5star hotel like teh balliago or something. But putting a 5star hotel in a 4star hotel building just doesn't blend in right.

Over-all I would stay there again but I as we did during this stay, we were hanging out at other hotels like the Wynn, Bellagio.

I took many pictures of the 2bd suite. I'll have it up within a day or so.

Overall Rating:

Service: 10/10 ^
Hotel Room Quality: 10/10 ^
Skyloft Lobby and public areas : 10/10 ^
MGM lobby and public areas: 6/10 :td:

MGM has some of the best restaurants in town: Craftsteak and Nob Hill. Fiamma and Shibuya are also very good. Wolfgang Puck is excellent for lunch. For entertainment, Tabu and Studio 54 are considered top notch. Perhaps you prefer an "elegant" atmosphere to an "exciting" one but for what it is, I think MGM excells.

As a regular Skylofts guest I can understand both opinions
expressed in this thread so far.

But IMHO. Going with QuietLion here. The MGM has really come
around in the last year. The improvements to the Restaurants
and Sports Book. The new Poker Room. The new Robuchon restaurants.
Yes the MGM is BIG. But the staff overall makes a good effort.
Pits and Hosts work with "Loft Guests" to go the extra effort if
you identify yourself. MGM nightclubs are some of the best in town

No. Its not the 4 Seasons or Wynn. Almost the Bellagio.

But it has its place. And the Skylofts makes up for the "4 Stars downstairs". Its always great to get into Cratfsteak on a Saturday night with no wait.
Thanks to the "Loft Concierge". 6 out of 10 is a little harsh
I would give it a 8 out of 10.

The new Poker Room.

It's hilarious to hear how you guys describe MGM like it's some 3rd world ghetto. But anyways what's the deal with the poker room. Is it a cash buy-in? What's the buy-in?

Well, they got both cash game and tournaments, different stakes and buy-ins. Here's a link to some detailed info for you: MGM poker room info (http://www.allvegaspoker.com/room_26.html)

Hi chimoe125,
Thank you for posting the pictures - I look forward to seeing what I missed out on last time.

Did the gaming opportunities play a part in your choice of this hotel, and did you play enough to get comped for at least whatever you charged, such as meals at the restaurants?

[Tacky question (to y'all)]
If I couldn't stretch to a stay here for the week would you think it is worthwhile to book the first few days at MGM, Wynn or similar and book the 5+ star uber-floor for the final night or two?

Maybe not as smart as a shorter stay for a few days, but wouldn't it be a nice way to end the stay, just to enjoy the ambience and the perks? - and hopefully use of the Maybach around town for that last night ;)

After Skylofts, what is the next step up in style, while staying near to the Strip? How do you regulars top your finest hotel stays (aside from breaking the house? :))

chimoe125, thank you for the pictures - it is quite different in style from my expectations.
Pseudomonas, from the Forbes article, I'd guess this is where MGM puts up its whales. Comped of course...

Out of curiosity, how do casinos differentiate between genuine whales and problem gamblers? Here in Sydney I read the odd case where a problem gambler lives the whale lifestyle, until their six- or seven-figure embezzlement of their company or charity (or wealthy boss) is uncovered.
[I suppose there is no differentiation until law enforcement gets involved, unless the person is already blacklisted].

I'm looking forward to (your?) review of the Mansion in this forum ;) :D

That's funny. The casinos' approach to problem gambing is providing some pamphlets on the subject in the corner of the casino. Kinda like how Budweiser makes 99 commercials showing hot women drinking and having a blast and 1 commercial saying "Drink Responsibly".

Heading into town on my first real Vegas trip (Last one was just a couple of nights, a few years ago). Anyone know if I need 'advanced' reservations to get into Craftsteak at MGM, ill be staying there, but I never know how busy some of the nicer resturants will be.

Also, any general idea what a meal for 2 would run there, not including the wine of course.

Thanks

I would make sure you get a concierge to book it for you if you are
planning a Friday or Saturday night and are staying on property.
Figure about $ 50-60 a head without wine.

You 70`s guys must really be getting bored. Nice opinion and post.
Real helpful. NOT.

If you are an expert about the 70`s you are pushing 60 and getting too old anyway.

I know you are, but what am I? Infinity. :p

Seriously, lighten up, Francis. I'm dissing an inaminate object - an MGM room. I'm not dissing you. OK, I'm dissing your taste for staying at the Brady's house. :D :D :D
