The flights will be operated on MD-11, with World Airways flight crew and mix LY/World cabin crew.

Do ElAl actually bother telling passengers that their flight will be operated by someone else?

You would think they would be obligated to let them know.

You would think so yes, but do they in practice is different matter.
Personally I would really annoyed if they wouldn’t, and I then found myself on an MD-11 operated by a different carrier.

The flights appear on the LY online schedule as Y only.
World Airways MD11 is not a new thing to El Al. Back in 1998, LY have leased an MD11 from World Airways for the summer. Here is a picture (http://www.airliners.net/open.file/0404984/M/) of the aircraft in LY colors.

??? Where did you find that?
Its probably a mistake, the 22 is a saturday.
BTW - Not only did they lease from World back in 1998 (as Apirchik mentioned) but also in the summer of 2000.

many yrs ago (dont remember the exact year) World actually had reg scheduled service from NY to TLV, and not charters. It didnt last too long before World went back to being simply a Charter Company and dropped All of its scheduled routes. probably what allowed it to stay in Biz.
BTW the dates shown above are at the End of Passover, beats me why LY doesnt need them for the beginning of the Yom Tov.

It is on the EL AL website. My mistake though. If you enter a date for the online schedule, it gives you the 00:xx and 01:xx flights for the next day as well, so in this case it was listing the flights for 23/4.

Probably because people leaving Israel through the beginning of the Passover school holiday are more spread out than everyone that wants to rush back to get the kids back by the time school starts back up.

sorry that doesnt make any sense. why? Cause I doubt that LY will take the Charters from World and have them fly Empty out of TLV. Im sure they will be full in both directions. So since Most people flying to TLV for Pesach will be going from this Sat night thru Tues afternoon (maybe a number Tues night as well) its not spread out on the Inbound to TLV and will be over the same amount of days as at the end of Pesach.
There are also alot of Isrealis who want to get back Home for Pesach but Im sure more want OUT.

I think yosithezet was looking at it from a secular Israeli--not frum New Jersian--perspective. Yes, there are a lot of dati diaspora Jews who fly to Israel for the holiday. But there are probably many more secular Israelis who LEAVE Israel during Pesach because school's out. Think the British meaning of "holiday," not the American meaning. ;)
In both cases, there is a rush to get to Israel before a certain day (Erev Pesach for the frum, the first school day after spring/Pesach break for the secular). But there's not as much of a rush to leave Israel by either party (the frum have Hol Hamoed and after Pesach to leave--the secular have the first part of their vacation to leave).

Then LY should have needed the extra planes at the beginning to handle to the number of Israelis who are wanting to fly out. FWIW, I know a number of Israeli Families that fly to the US or Europe to Family or Hotels for Pesach. Although its mainly that the Dati are flying in rather then out.
I think that something else is up, I dont know maybe the retiring of an older 747 thats lease is up or something.

On one hand there are less two 742 in pax configuration in the LY fleet, but on the other hand there is an extra 744. I am not sure though that both 742 were converted to pax configuration by Passover of last year. I think one was converted before Passover last year, and the second one was only converted into pax before the summer schedule. So technically there are the same amount of 747's in the LY as was there last passover.
4x - ELS joined LY's fleet last May

What's so wonderful about it? Is it anything like the MD-80, which I don't like much because it is a bit cramped?

Yeah, I usually view things from the perspective of those of us who were less concerned with parnasa and moved to Israel. ;)

You can be frum, from NY, and still move to Israel, like I did 35 years ago.
And by the way, I thank G-d, am not complaining about "parnasa" (income)

Excuse me if I am not thrilled about taking a World Airways flight but my one experience with them was not a thrilling one.
In October 1966, I was on a World Airways plane, chartered by the U.S. Army, to take soldiers to Vietnam. We flew out of San Francisco dressed in our khaki short sleeve summer uniforms and the first announcement the pilot made to us was several hours into the flight -- he told us that we would be making a landing to refuel and that we would have to get out of the plane.
We speculated among ourselves where we would be landing. SF to Vietnam? Our best guess was Hawaii.
Wrong.
It was Alaska. In October. In summer uniforms. The plane landed and we had to walk down the stairs and then go about 100 meters to the terminal. I guarantee you that none of us ever ran that fast in our lives!
After taking off again, they put on a film. It was the perfect thing to show new replacements heading to a war zone: The Longest Day. We just loved seeing soldiers getting shot up on the beaches of Normandy. :(

Oh quit yer whining & snivelling! :D It beats making the ride over there in a cargo plane like a C-141 or a C-130 sitting on cargo net seats. Right?
Fast forward to today. I take a World Airways charter quite often to Angola. It's a n/s from Houston. It's quite comfortable and most of the rows are Business Class, with a few First Class seats up front, and a few Y class seats in the back. Even the Y class seats are much more comfortable than what one gets on a regular commercial airline. Plus we get UA miles, 10,000 per roundtrip.
Uh, I did miss the khakis when they got rid of them. I wonder what idiot in the braintrust at DOD thought of that one
