In YYZ you can use the AC MLL (Maple Leaf Lounge). It is located in the IFT (In-Field Terminal). There are no flight announcements.

In MXP, there are two AZ lounges. When flying to LCA on CY you are restricted to one of the two (can't recall the name). For the return to YYZ, you can use the Botticelli Lounge but be forewarned that it is extremely crowded on weekdays. They have coffee/espresso/capuccino/cookies but n ot much more.

In LCA, unless you are a smoker, you will not be comfortable in the lounge. They do have a reasonable selection of beverages and snacks close to the door, so you could pop in quickly, if you hold your breath.

Thanks very much. So, just to confirm...I would be able to use the LCA lounge after arriving in LCA and waiting for a flight to BEI in economy?

Yes - mine was cancelled - so I did not have to drive to Toronto without knowing. Will rebook in 2007.

My flight (today's) was not cancelled. Apparently it was a mess here yesterday.

Currently enjoying some Bailey's on the rocks in the MLL....

last time i was in LCA, i got a good deal from avis online for my car but when i got there, they charged me close to 90 dollars for my first tank of gas...people have mentioned that some companies only require this as a deposit (avis refused to allow me the deposit route)

im wondering who has had luck not paying for a tank of gas at the beginning, and what companies did they use?

any luck with hertz?
thrifty?

thnx!

We had the same shock at Thrifty, but the guy behind the counter told us it would be refunded if we returned the car full and showed a receipt. I was thrilled that he kept his word since the rental contract showed the charge to be nonrefundable!

Good luck!

We rented from Payless Car Rental, whose policy says "All vehicles are rented with a full tank of gasoline, (deposit required) and vehicles brought back full will recieve a full refund of fuel deposit, however, vehicles may also be returned empty where there will be no refund."

It turned out there was only like an eighth of a tank anyway, so we just paid for it and returned it empty.

Fantastic... Today's flight has been cancelled.... Hopefully Saturday's will go. If not, is this an EU Compensation situation? If I remember correctly, the answer is no..

Probably not, if so, AZ would have been finished a long time ago.:D

We were on LY411 in a 757. Had the muffins and water- a nice breakfast snack after my long sleep last night... The lounge looked decent, but we wouldn't have been there long anyways. rgm18 knew of a great Arabic restaurant by the airport Habibi's... we had a good time.

I asked about compensation for items that had to be purchased since luggage was not in....that is when they addressed it. They said to 'save receipts'. So I think that one must ask.

This is just a thought...it appears that those having the most issues are those with luggage checked straight through yyz-mxp/fco-lca. Those with a stopover in Italy are not having the same problems. I know this would be a pain...but perhaps it might work better....just check the luggage to rome/mxp and on the layover re-check the bag at rome/mxp. I know my layovers in italy going over are long ones....so time wouldn't be a big issue. Just a thought.

Wish I had done this, as my bag was lost (having checked it YYZ-MXP-LCA). Several other people connecting did, though, receive their bags.

Anyone have experiences with submitting receipts for reimbursement?

Our luggage was delayed by a day and we went ahead and bought some basic items. When the luggage arrived the next day, we went to the airport and submitted our receipts and got the money without a problem (I think the limit is about 50 pounds a person). Although you could probably do this the day of departure, the office is not open at all times and may even by busy at times. So it may be better to go ahead of time if its possible or else get to the airport real early and make sure they are open beforehand.

I had my one change/re-ticketing via Nicollo.

Now I see that my original LCA-FCO flight no longer operates on the day I'm scheduled to fly. Looks like no LCA-MXP either.

Will they reschedule me LCA-ATH-FCO? Or require me to fly the same segment on a different day? What kind of flexibility will I have?

Thanks!

This is a good question that has not really come up since this schedule change has only recently taken place.

My guess is that you have a reasonable case to be made to simply drop the Italy-LCA segments, since its circumstances beyond your control. Otherwise, you certainly will be provided the flexibility to reschedule on dates with actual service to LCA.

Well, my MXP-LCA segment still exists. And I actually want to fly to LCA! But I am not really keen on changing my dates.

I'd be willing to fly LCA-ATH (AZ codeshare, CY operated) which has D inventory available...

Frankly, I wouldn't mind flying LCA-ATH and doing a stopover there. But I doubt that would be allowed as the original fare didn't allow for an ATH stopover. I'd even do it as an open jaw, finding my own way back to my return flight... But again, I doubt they'll ok that (at least prior to departure).

So next option I'd do LCA-ATH-FCO. I'd rather do that than change my dates.

Will have to ring up to find out, though I probably won't get around to this for a couple weeks (admittedly risking remaining D inventory).

When Cyprus Airways changed the days on which they are running LCA-FCO flights in the winter, I received an automated e-mail from Orbitz alerting me to the change. My itinerary was automatically changed, moving the LCA-FCO flight from a Monday, as scheduled during my one-time change with Nicolo, to the next day. As it so happened, this did not disrupt or overlap with any of my future flights, as I had scheduled a few-day stopover in FCO. I simply went to the airport and had my tickets (which had already been reissued after my one-time change) stickered to reflect the new LCA-FCO flight date.

If the schedule change doesn't make your itinerary un-flyable (by causing overlapping scheduled flights) and just results in a different number of days in each place, I would tend to think (although I can't say with authority) that you will just be switched to the same flight on the date closest to the one you had picked. If, however, Cyprus Airways schedule change results in other flights on your itinerary being impossible to make, I'm not sure what kind of options Mr. Mattia will present you with.

Thanks! Let this also be a reminder to those who had already called AZ for seat assignments on post Jan-5th flights that you may need to call again as your seating configuration could have changed, making your previously-assigned seats non-existent. That's what happened to me anyway.

All right, now this is officially getting ridiculous. Today when I look up my YYZ-MXP and MXP-YYZ flights in January on both ITN and alitalia.com (started a dummy booking) they are listed as being on a 767-300/ER (they are still listed as 764 on the Alitalia TravelDesk, but I would presume the other two sources are more accurate in real time). Which means my seat assignments have been blown out for a second time, and it also means (if I understand correctly) that we may end up with the worst possible business class seats available (ex-AC). Hell I don't even care about the seats (I've never flown in business class so they'll be better than anything I've ever had), I just want to make sure I'm sitting next to person I'm traveling with, which is becoming increasingly difficult with all these aircraft swaps and blown-out seat assignments.

I don't know if they'll change the routing via ATH; probably not. I was able to get them to change my flights pretty easily when the LCA-FCO I was supposed to be on disappeared. I was accomodated same day LCA-MXP, and moved from the FCO-JFK to MXP-EWR (operates later in the day, so I could still make the connection same day and not lose an extra day in Milan). My JFK-YYZ is the following day, so I didn't have to worry about that one.

The big problem I had was that the FCO-JFK was on the 777 and the MXP-EWR is on the 767, so not as nice a flight, but I'm not sweating that issue

Theoretically it sounds reasonable. And if you paid the $3300 plus taxes, they probably would not have a problem doing it. But under the circumstances, I would be surprised if they would do it, being that they would have to pay more for that routing. Just my guess, though I hope it works out for you.

From the database compiled, it doesn't look like anyone else is flying on my dates. I depart Dec 26 YYZ-MXP, 31 Dec MXP-LCA, 1 Jan LCA-MXP and scheduled to fly MXP-YYZ on Jan 3 though I might try to move that Jan 2.

Why would lca-ath cost them more than lca-fco? (Because of the ath-fco on az metal??)

Clearly, this is a special situation where a phone call to Mr. Mattia is both appropriate and necessary. While Nicolo does not field any phone calls directly regarding YYZ-LCA itins, I can assure you that Nicolo remains the final arbiter of situations like gleff's, and he will make best efforts to acccomodate your need to keep your travel dates intact.

Is this standard practice?

Many airlines do this. Often it is called "favored availability" and/or "married segments". Married segments are when the airline locks the two segments together so they only give the favored availability if you book the longer flights. In Alitalia's case, they are not "married."

Another way to look to see if there is room in business class is to look at CY's availability. CY412 on 29 January shows C4D4 available, which is the same plane as AZ7707.

I hope you can get into business class on this flight.

We got put in Y from LCA to MXP, will they upgrade us to business if there is availability? has this happened to anyone?

A few weeks ago leaving LCA, we were booked Y to MXP. Checking in, we asked if J was available. He said, if we talk to AZ staff, there was lots of space for us.

I strolled around and found the office. She was ever so polite, and told us she'd try and see if Cypress Airways would accomodate us.

During our conversation, she mentioned that they've zeroed all the seats to MXP. Quotes like 'no more waitlist, standbys' had me thinking that the FlyerTalkers had used up the Cyprians patience more than a few times. I winked and said. It's all over in 4 more months ;)

I guess it all depends on a few things.
*Availability
*Your approach (she seemed happy to help us)
*Good Luck

Bottom line, we got 3 C seats, lounge passes, and a great flight up.

Hope your experience is the same

I heard from someone who got in on this deal too that some are leaving very long messages (several minutes long) when calling the Alitalia office in NY to get their ticket changes done. (Sometimes the message doesn't even finish or communicate the info needed for them to get back.)

If upon contacting AZ in NY you get voice mail, the suggestion is to simply say something like the following:

"I'm calling about the Toronto-Larnaca tickets. My name is ______ and my telephone number is ________. Speak to you soon. Thanks."

They will then call back and speed things along.

(Leaving ticket numbers, record locators, dates, and flight numbers on voicemail is not preferred.)

Such a practice of a simple message with your name and phone number will speed up things for those trying to help us there -- especially since it will free them up from listening to hours of voice mail, during which time they can't answer our phone calls or actually concentrate on finishing up things for the LCA flyers.

Hope your experience is the sameOne more factoid. We found out during our trip that AZ has 30 seats on the CY flights to/from LCA. This may need to be factored in when looking at availability.

Which of the lounges on this trip have free wifi? do any make you pay to use it?Thanks again :-:

YYZ has both wireless and ethernet and it is free.

Milan doesn't have free wireless but you can pay for it (I forget the cost).

Not sure about LCA since I was there for such a short period of time I didn't even try.

I had my one change/re-ticketing via Nicollo.

Now I see that my original LCA-FCO flight no longer operates on the day I'm scheduled to fly. Looks like no LCA-MXP either.

I am in the exact same situation in that my scheduled Monday LCA-FCO flight no longer operates. I am however flying on from FCO to JFK same day and I have to be back on this flight so can’t go a day later. I have made my 1 change and am locked in to these dates for other reasons anyway. Going a day earlier would completely screw with my plans to travel to the UK (talk about going the long way round!) Therefore what do people think would be the chances of AZ allowing me an open jaw ticket flying into LCA on the outbound but then out of FCO (i.e. dropping LCA-FCO)?

Besides AZ's lounge in MXP, there is also a generic multi-airline lounge. I don't quite remember where it is though, sorry. The internet is free (they give you a card good for an hour, but it seems that there's really no limit, and you can ask for more cards if needed). Also it is a bit more spacious and broken up (not just a big open room like AZs lounge).

Just got seat assignments for the third different time, since the aircraft configuration for my flights has been changed twice now from what it was originally. We'll see how many days these last...

I'm at the point where I'm literally checking every day to make sure they haven't made another aircraft swap (my departure is in two weeks, not several months out or anything) as they have already done so twice in the last three weeks or so. A small price to pay for a $33 transatlantic business class fare, I know, but I'd really like to sit next to the person I'm traveling with (who is a nervous flyer) on these 8+ hour flights. All I did was roll my eyes, it's not like I asked how many miles I should demand as compensation. :p

Can anyone comment on how strictly CY enforces its "Hand Luggage" rules?

If I tried to carry on a laptop in its case and a small backpack (small enough to fit under a seat), would they be likely to have a problem with that (perhaps I can claim the backpack is my purse :D )?

"Hand Luggage
In the interest of comfort and safety of all our passengers, Cyprus Airways accepts one piece of cabin baggage not exceeding 115 cms (45 ins) total dimensions (height+width+depth) and 5 Kgs weight. It must be of a size and shape to allow for storage in aircraft overhead compartments, or any other authorised stowage area.

In addition to the one piece of hand luggage, customers may also carry Duty Free Articles (liquor, tobacco, perfumes), a purse, an overcoat, a small camera, or a reasonable amount of reading material."

My wife and I each carried backpacks on all the flights. Both backpacks were larger then the maximium carry on size and about 20 Kg. The only airline that made us check them out of Delta, Alitalia, Ryan, Royal Air Maroc, and Cyprus was Ryan Airlines. We each also had some kind of handbag on the flights but thier size and weight varied as we mailed stuff home.

I would say if you can fit your bags into the overhead bins or through the sizing plates they put on some of the x-ray machines you'll be fine. ;) I would guess they would treat your laptop as a handbag. But there's never any guarantee. I wouldn't worry, and I wouldn't draw attention to the issue.

Just a heads up to anyone considering using these tickets to visit Egypt.

Alitalia has round trip tickets between MXP or FCO and CAI for about $275.00 (USD) with service seven days a week compared to Cyprus Airlines for about the same but only two days a week, also gives skyteam miles which I imagine most on this deal would benefit from.

Hope this helps someone.

Just got back from a week-long trip on this fare. On Dec 31 MXP-LCA there was only one other person in business class besides myself, another FT'er. Then the next day, Jan 1, LCA-MXP there were only two others in business class besides myself, also two FT'ers! I figured businessmen don't fly right around the holiday but that only FT'ers were in C was kind of funny. YYZ-MXP was full in C on the outbound the day after Christmas but there were several empty seats today MXP-YYZ.

Anyone know how long it takes for the AZ miles to show up in your NW worldperks account? The miles from my outbound YYZ-MXP last Tuesday have not been credited yet. I would like them to show up before I take my next NW flight next week so I easily get the platinum elite bonus. Right now I am still showing only as gold elite.

The Malpensa express leaves every 30 min, it costs about 10 euros and it is usally on time. There's also a bus going to MIlan, cheaper (about 5 euros) and gets you into the central station, while the MXP express leaves you in Milan Cadorna, from there you will have to take the subway to the central station. If on a week-end take the bus, might be longer but it's cheaper and more convenient, connection-wise. from there there are plenty of trains to VCE.Enjoy

There is an airport train between MXP and Milano but the train station it pulls into is Cadorna, which isn't near the main rail station (Centrale) that's used by long-distance trains. It'd be easier to take the express bus from MXP to Centrale where you'll just have a long long flight of stairs up to the concourse and platforms. Allow at least 1:30 to get to Termini if you are arriving on a weekday AM (traffic into Milano can be horribly backed up).

Excluding staging to YYZ, YYZ-MXP (or v-v) x 2.25 x 4 and YYZ-FCO x 2.25 x 2 + MXP-FCO x 1.75 x 2. There's also the Italy-LCA flights that have been credited to AZ MM. SHould get a free flight on that following the last trip which will also net YYZ-MXP x 2.5 x 2 + FCO-LIN * 2 on the FB account.

I tried looking for some previous input regarding my question, and couldn't seem to locate it, but I thought I read it awhile back.

Anyways, I am hoping to get some experience/feedback in regards to changing dates and route for the MXP/FCO-LCA segments due to LCA flights not operating on the desired dates.

My current routing is YYZ-MXP-FCO-LCA-FCO... yada yada... Unfortunately the dates I am looking for do not necessarily match the schedule. Will AZ allow my 1 time change to include a different airport (MXP instead FCO/vice versa) then my original itin so I can go/stopover on the preferred dates, or be forced to fly with the original routing?

Thanks!

If CY dropped your flight you can change your schedule pretty freely. I wouldn't try using that to move it to a different month or something, but I was able to change routing (LCA-FCO-JFK -> LCA-MXP-EWR) without any trouble.

I had a pair of tickets for June of '06 that I put on "hold" and recently rescheduled for February. As far as Joseph M. and Nicolo seem to be concerned your flight needs to be like this YYZ-MXP/FCO-LCA-MXP/FCO-YYZ puddle jumps between FCO and MXP are included and of no consequence regardless of your original schedule. You can also add stopovers at either MXP/FCO regardless of whether or not you had stopovers there to begin with or if you originally even transited that city i.e. FCO.

Now if you never contacted Nicolo about your tickets before letting them lapse then you might have some problems getting your tickets reissued at all.

On another note, I did a fair amount of searching through our massive thread (plus LCA Trip Report) and came up with some FT'ers that may help with another question I have. I noted that umguy, dhacker, spiff, and guwonder seemed to have posted experience on transfers, specifically Schengen/non-Schengen.

Hopefully they or anyone else can help with my specific question: I plan to fly FCO-JFK, and it turns out I will be coming in from MUC (on LH) with about 2.5 hours between the 2 flights, so I presume it's enough, right?

Also, I am trying to figure out how I can check in @ FCO when I land from MUC. I know I'll be going from Terminal B to C, and wondered if it's possible to check in airside in Terminal B for the JFK flight and avoid going land-side. Anyway to do so in the AZ lounge or Transfer Desk? I've flown out of MXP enough, but FCO is a first  Any tips?

Thanks in advance!

I can only tell you about our experience last week:
AZ: YYZ-MXP Terminal 1
EZ: MXP-LGW Terminal 2

We arrived at 7am and our flight to LGW departed at 11:20 (shifted from the original 10:45 slot :( )

Transiting from Terminal 1 to T2 involves a bus ride (around 30 minutes inclusing waiting time) and we were at the queue for check in at around 8:20am.

2.5 hours was enough for us to collect our luggage (granted the AZ priority tags worked their magic ^) pass through security (I'm EU, my husband is Japanese), get the bus and arrive at check in within 1 hour and 15 minutes of departure time.

Going from one part of Terminal One to another should be much simpler. Even if you can't check in airside, I'm sure you won't have a problem.

Going through security after checking in will likely take the most time.

Worst case scenario for you would be a delay in retrieving your luggage on the flight from MUC.

Just got back from a fantastic RTW that included YYZ-MXP-FCO-LCA. Pieced together the rest from award tickets and cheap one-ways: LCA-CAI on CY was inexpensive, and a oneway CAI-Australia was also very reasonable.

Our time in Cyprus was very enjoyable. We ventured to Turkish North of the island for an overnight which was well worthwhile (no worries with the rental car). The food and hospitality of the people on both sides of the border was pleasantly surprising.

Thanks again rosj for the original post, and to AZ for honouring our trips!

I wonder if these are 1-way fares entered as RTs. the base fare was $184 and now it is listed as $361. If you advised Nicolo BEFORE your departure date that you were not going to fly on that given date, then you will be able to get a refund, via AZ,not Orbitz. If you failed to advise Nicolo about not flying on actual departure date, then your ticket will be considered a 'no-show', subject to cancellation and no ability to get refund.

There's been a fault on the SPG website for a while - but usually, Milan is one of the few places with good deals for the "cash + points" promotion with Starwood. I was contemplating staying in Milan an extra day earlier this month and it would have come out at something $45 + 2,800SPGpoints for a night at the Westin Palace.
EDIT: MY MISTAKE!!! Looks like it's 4,000points plus $60 for the Westin or the Sheraton.

There was a hotel rate error last year with Travelocity which a few people (including my mother) took advantage of. She spent 4 days in Milan paying under $5 a night (including breakfast!). Here's the thread with advice and suggestions for a short trip:

Hotwire and Priceline work well enough for Milan too. Also, there are hotels near the train station (where the MXP express bus drops people off at in town itself) which function well enough for a day or two although nothing fancy.

Really quick question. Has anyone been successful in dropping the LCA segs? I've seen mixed reports of doing it at the airport, but not before leaving. I just want to know so that I can make appropriate arrangements if they can be dropped. Thanks all.

I walked up to the gate for my mxp fco lca mxp flight and told them that my 1 day "meeting" in lca was cancelled. No problem, got a rental car and drove to Nice FR for 3 days. Came back thru Torino on the way back for my mxp-yyz flight.

Ok, as some of you have noticed YYZ-MXP should have been operated w. a 764 starting on the 5th of Jan. Well EI-DDW the aircraft that is in GSO for refurbishment apparently is staying there longer so everything got switched up.
As of now till Feb 17 the flight will be operated with EI-DBP, unless further scheduling changes. This is the worst AZ 767 in terms of business class. It still has the AirCanda business class but its in HORRIBLE conditions. Apparently after the 17th its going to get refurbished at GSO too. For those of you traveling from the 18th of Feb to the 15th of March you will get a 762 (ex. eurofly) which have the standard OLD Alitalia business class. Comfy, a little old, with no IFE. Starting on the 16th of March you should get the new AZ business with the lie-flat seats. I tried the new seats a couple weeks ago and i personally find them VERY comfortable. Service on my flight was great and food was very good. These planes have digEplayers (the 1st refurbished one had digEplayers, now they are using a better type of player apparently...). In the Other European Airlines forum there is a link to the TR w. pictures (in Italian though).
Again this is if the reconfiguring process goes as planed (right now it HAS NOT).

Just be aware that AZ has the right to audit the YYZ-LCA flights, and if they see that yoiu dropped flights (even at the supposed authorization of AZ airport staff), they can conceivably charge you for a full fare YYZ-MXP.

I can tell you that AZ management is carefully watching the YYZ-LCA pax. As the page one policies clearly note- Nicolo (and now Joe Mattia) are the only ones who can officially make changes to a YYZ-LCA itin...and as we all know, dropping the LCA segments ain't an option.

So, while you might think there is some short term benefit of finding an uninformed AZ agent to drop LCA segments, final authority rests with Nicolo/Joe and they have the long-term ability to issue you a costly debit memo.

A debit memo? I was not aware that airlines send debit memos to passengers. If a passenger receives a debit memo, where's the obligation to pay it? Unless the passenger has credit with AZ, a debit memo seems useless.

(Although you must have lucked out with the caterers on the FCO-EWR route - the food on the YYZ-MXP route was, at best, mediochre - my husband ate the chicken... it looked nice enough, but MrLapLap assures me it wasn't - his chicken meals on Air Berlin were much better, ie, they tasted of chicken.... and this from someone who went to a British Boarding school, the legacy of which means that he'll enjoy practically anything!)

But AZ never communicated anything directly to the passengers. All information was received via flyertalk.com, and the AZ representative, IIRC, never actually posted on this thread. So, if they are carefully watching the YYZ-LCA pax, shouldn't they communicate with the pax?

Sorry but if the add collect is not done at time of change at the airport by the AZ ticket agent, the customer is not going to receive any memo from AZ later. Now if a travel agent was dropping segments that would be a different story.

I'm not suggesting that AZ will necessarily do anything punitive or try and collect additional fare. I'm just advising that they are NOT in the dark about different 'manuevers' by FTers...and the possible consequences of such.

Well i know that in FCO AZ uses Sodecar as caterers (they are closing down in a couple months) and because its an FCO only thing thats probably why its better.
The menu was pasta with pachino tomatoes and pasta with shrimp and leeks and pumpkin which was VERY good. Then Salmon in potato crust which i thought was good. Cheeses were very good and desserts were fantastic. It was all rather simple food, i just found it very tasty. Maybe its just cuz im Italian I dont know.

Why the alarmist tone? If a hospitable Italian agent is willing to accomodate a change in travel plans why would the passenger have any reason to believe this would not supercede the AZ New York directives? It seems that AZ has much bigger problems than tracking down the malicious "maneuverings" of a few FTers. I realize some have made it their job to convey the official party line from the AZ NY office (and have provided valuable information) but the danger of a long-term debit memo (precedent?) seems exaggerated.

Thanks again to everyone who has helped make this a great travel experience and MR for us.

While I am indeed 'conveying' the official party line, that doesn't necessarily mean that I agree with it or agree with AZ's overall handling of YYZ-LCA situation. So, its the classic- please don't kill the messenger!!

Therefore, when I offer info about the risks/benefits of dropping LCA segments, I'm doing so just to provide you context about how best to make your decision about trying to drop segments. If you can drop without ahassle, then great, more power to you. I just don't want everyone to assume that there is a new policy or precedent that you can RELY on, just because some people fell through the cracks on the dropping LCA restrictions.

Had the same catering MXP-EWR a couple weeks ago. I had both pastas and the salmon and can't agree more regarding the quality of the food on that flight. The only real disappointment was no good parmigano cheese on the cheese plate, which we did get on YYZ-MXP.

I also noticed a few other peculiarities on the different service and can't figure out if they are due to the difference of originating at an out station (YYZ) or if it is because of the market (YYZ v EWR/JFK). On the YYZ flight, "hot towel" service was a paper towel with a few drops of hot water on it. It was actually mostly dry. On the EWR flight it was a large, heavy terrycloth hand towel well moistened. The food was dramatically better on the EWR run, with the exception of one chees on the YYZ flight. And the FAs swent out of their way to be nice on the EWR flight and weren't particularly bad, but certainly not memorable on the YYZ flight. I understand serving a slow and comfortable meal, and I know there is the execcutive meal option, but they took 3 hours to serve dinner on the YYZ-MXP, and the cabin lights were on the whole time. Even with the little blinders it wasn't great.

Yeah, the crew I had really went out of their way to make everyone happy. I guess AZ sends the better crews to JFK/EWR? The crews I had out of IAD were usually terrible...

It's my understanding this is only the case if you changed the date as the original fare rules seem to allow a full refund even if you're a no-show.

That is correct. I refunded 2 original issue "no-show" tickets via Orbitz. Process was painless, refund appeared on my card within a few weeks.

Right next to a Chinese food restaurant with take-out and a short walk to the beach where there are lots of restaurants and fast food (KFC, Pizza Hut, and McDonalds - the Greek Mac is really good). We stayed at Les Palmiers (http://www.lespalmierscityhotel.com/) for, I believe, CYP25 or CYP30. It sounds like it's in the same general location as the place mentioned above. It's not a hotel apartment - it's just a beach hotel, so it's a small room and small bathroom - but it's clean, close to everything (including the airport) and the view is fantastic. Here's my TripAdvisor review (http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g190379-d586275-r6495970-Les_Palmiers_Sunotel-Larnaca.html).

The front desk was also indifferent to my requests for a clean room. I guess you get what you pay for- it was 18 pounds (though very close to the airport- a 5 pound cab ride, maybe 5-8 minutes).

There are very limited options when it comes to hostels in Milan. The only one operating is not very close to the city center. There was a hostel relatively close, but that closed down last year. If you must stay, you should be able to stay without membership, just pay a couple euros more.

For the past 3 trips to Italy, I've been avoiding stopping over @ MXP as a result of limited budget accomodations. I personally think if there is more than 1 person, a better idea is to find a cheap room via Priceline in Milan. It is not a very budget friendly city (at least accomodation wise). A good site for lodging I've found is bookings.net. Seems to price out lower sometimes for places, and even has places not available on the big 3.

Good luck!

I've had enormous problems with Travelocity in trying to get a refund. When calling Travelocity (whether the regular Customer Service line or the "VIP" line), they put you on hold, contact AZ's regular reservations agents to confirm, and come back with the "this ticket isn't refundable" line. You can then contact Consumer Relations, and as usual, Consumer Relations will send you a "we'll get back to you" message and then ignore you.

So I talked to Mr. Nicolo today. He contacted the Travelocity supervisor in charge, and sure enough, I got a phone call from said supervisor within an hour. He verified that the tickets are, indeed, refundable, and suggested that Travelocity's refund agents were aware of this. His suggestion was to just fedex tickets in with a note, but having dealt with Travelocity before, I would strongly advise against sending anything in without first having everything sorted out.

Nicolo, btw, was great, as usual, and deserves another ^ .

This similar question has been asked numerous times. I, for one, have sent him Starbuck's certs several times. I would suggest flying solo on this as it is hard to get everyone on the same flight. He is well aware of FlyerTalk and would appreciate the gesture no matter what. And, while he does enjoy his coffee, I'm sure he would be tickled pink over variations on this theme. :)

go to the Sala Pergolesi lounge.. Upon entry ask for a internet card, they will copy your passport and give you a prepaid card that should work on the wirless network (anywhere in the airport). a single day pass. should work most places in the airport, since this is the prepaid card that you would buy if you were anywhere in the airport..

One thing I noticed about this was that they store your passport in those pigeon holes in the open located to the left of you. Considering that their desk is unattended the majority of the time, I considered this to be a major risk. I asked for it back after they registered it into the computer.

Italian national carrier Alitalia 'unable to confirm or deny' €400m 2006 loss reports as Air France says no to further stake

Italian flag carrier Alitalia insists it is unable to confirm or deny speculation that its losses mounted up to €400 million ($518 million) last year.

While in announcing third quarter losses in November Alitalia had said it expected one-off gains to help it record an operating profit for the fourth quarter. It has already said full year losses for 2006 would be higher than the €221 million debit recorded in the first half and the €167 million net loss last year.

The Italian government, which currently holds a 49.1% stake in Alitalia, has put at least 30.1% of the carrier up for sale and is calling for expressions of interest from would-be investors by 29 January.

Good luck.

I flew in 2A on the 1-2-2 config recently. It's surprisingly quite comfortable. and has anyone noticed that the service has improved remarkably?

Compared with my trip in the summer, I think that the quality of service now seems more attentive and FAs are more interested. Perhaps its due to lower loads this time of yr?

Using your AZ miles for going to Argentina anytime soon? There you can find Italians who speak Spanish with some Italian influence but have trouble understanding Portuguese (despite the neighbors). :D And you'll still find the Italian grandmothers living around Buenos Aires who tell you that they can't speak Spanish. :D

Great place to use these miles. :)

I don't have enough AZ miles to get to B.A. in comfort,if ya know what I mean...so for the time being, I can wait.

And even if I understand spanish, I can't speak it, because if I try I'll mix it up with italian and portuguese!:D

Thanks, urbandirtbag. I'm not sure I still have the credit card with which I originally purchased the ticket, though. I guess I'll wait and see. I will copy everything and do return receipt as well. Thanks again for the reply!

wow wow wow. u found those seats comfortable? I'm shocked, last time I saw that plane they were in horrible condition and the crew had to go around to force some seats down (shoving them with all their strength). Just for the record that plane is the one in worst condition (interior wise) of the whole fleet.
I flew on their new business class with lie-flat seats and found it VERY comfortable. Service on the past two alitalia flights i had was exceptional. I have noticed a great service imporvement this is due to two things... one: great inconsistency between crews. two: they are scared about loosing their jobs.

I am 99% positive that the airline/online agency is required to refund a ticket to the original credit card. If you no longer have that card, you need to contact the credit card company (or they will contact you, but I would not wait) and let them know a credit is coming to the closed account. Once it posts, you can request a check to be mailed to you.

i actually managed to sleep better on the 1-2-2 than on the old 2-1-2 config. and for some reason, the fabric on the 1-2-2 aircraft looked much much newer than the 2-1-2.

and i agree that the lie flat seats in the new business class is the most comfortable!

I guess they have been changed because they were horrendous a year ago. Well all the better for you and AZ.

I returned from Milan on Wednesday. I booked a room at the Best Western Astoria not far from the Amendola Fiera subway stop for $53 plus tax on Orbitz. The Best Western web site lists the cheapest room at this hotel for the same night at 90 Euros. The room was small but clean. The price includes a continental breakfast.

I stayed there during my trip. Defintely a nice enough BW. YVRCockaroach stayed at a different and nicer BW closer to the fashion district than the Astoria for only a few Euros more than me. Perhaps he can refresh my memory and share with the rest of us the hotel's name?

does anyone know how long I should wait for these miles to post to my Delta acct? It has now been 11 days since I returned. When should I contact Delta about this?

Thanks ^

If my miles don't credit in two weeks with Delta, I plan to file for missing mileage credit at the end of week three.

Alitalia will petition to make it a another national holiday, thus Italy will now have 23 national holidays per year. :p

Going on my 4th and final LCA trip tomorrow (en route to Jordan, Egypt and TRNC). Looks like AZ has moved flight ops from the IFT to the newly-opened Pier F so no more shuttle bussing.

Finally had the chance to meet Nicolo in the flesh, perched how above midtown on the 57th Floor of the Empire State Building.

Enjoyed our brief intro and hearing firsthand about the ongoing saga that is the YYZ-LCA mistake fare!!

Hope Nicolo will consider popping by the Feddies in DC, since its so close to NYC.

Did you raise the idea of the Freddies with him? I'd happily gift him some Amtrak points to come down. Spoke to him today and he's reticketing me again to deal with the CY schedule change. Pleasant, helpful, as always. ^

Any interesting inside tidbits you would like to share?

I'm thinking Nicolo should get a Freddie for himself. What a hero. I'll bet he'll be glad when he's finally, finally completely done with us, despite all the graciousness he has demonstrated. Once again, here's to Nicolo! ^
