Am waiting in my YYZ Hotel.. good thing I got the late 4 PM Checkout cause my flight from YYZ-FCO has been delayed from 4:35 to 8:10 PM!! Hopefully with the 5 hour layover in FCO, I can catch my flight to LCA.

God bless I am not flying out until tomorrow... but if you feel bored, let me know, maybe we can meet for a drink or so (sent you an e-mail).

Flying into YYZ from MXP yesterday, had a (albeit shorter) delay, too... the projector in Business Class was broken, it took them 6 mechanics and about an hour to replace it (but even the new one was not working properly either  ).

Tryed to credit my FCO-LCA flight to my NWA account and it shows up like this
31AUG2006 AZ 7700 CY 0317 C/D FCO - LCA N

Does this mean I will not be able to get credit on NW? Should I try to send in my boarding pass to NW or should I just go with AZ mileage account.

I recall MRP Alert got the LCA segment, but you're not really supposed to.

Can anyone who has gotten their miles to post, please verify the miles and the COS on NWA World Perks. It looks like I may be a handful of miles from maintaining my Elite; gotta plan for a possible MR if I'm short after this trip.

Here is what I got for YYZ-MXP, I still have "Q" (processing) for the return and did not get anything for LCA legs:
-----------------------------------------------EQM---Seg---Banked Miles
20AUG2006-- AZ 0653 AZ 0653 C/D YYZ-MXP----4,119--1-----4,119
--------------50% Class Bonus------------------2,060--------2,060

I was wondering does anyone know the phone number or email address for AZ regarding mileage credit, I took the trip in July and only my outbound credit has shown up to my AZ account. Cheers

This maybe kinda off topic....but would anyone who lives in or near YYZ be willing to let us park our car at their place for a couple of weeks while we are in Italy and LCA? We wanted to fly up from PIT, but it would cost 50,000 miles for both of us and we really have a lot better uses to put those miles to.

The only reason we are asking is because parking at YYZ is pretty expensive and both of us are students. Alternatively if anyone else knows of somewhere affordable to park in Toronto it would be really helpful if you could post that info here.

We will certainly be happy to gift an obliging FTer some Kentucky bourbon or some nice souveniers from Italy if they have a parking space.

Thanks very much :-:

Just arrived in LCA.. due to the delay, my baggage did not arrive with me. Also, due to the heightened security rules, I dont even have basic toiletries with me.. The officials at LCA say that my baggage is in FCO and will arrive tomorrow. But they were vague about what rights I have.. one person said that I have to submit receipts, etc but I thought they had to give some amount outright..

Why not do a hotel night and park free deal? Since you are driving up from Pittsburgh there's a good chance you could use a hotel either at the beginning or at the end. Looks like there are about 5 hotels that definately have a program. Quality Inn is available for $77 including up to 2 weeks of free parking. I, personally, would rather have a relaxing overnight hotel stay before/after that flight rather than having to be in the car immediately before/afterward.

Thanks for the advise. We actually need about 3 weeks of parking and the hotels don't seem to allow that. or do they?

The cost is still pretty high too; I guess we would pay it if we had to; but if we can find an alternative that would be great.

But they were vague about what rights I have.. one person said that I have to submit receipts, etc but I thought they had to give some amount outright..There is no actual requirement for the airline to provide any advance payments (although some do). The maximum you can claim is approx. 1400 USD per person, but that's in theory, and requires written proof to support the claim.

And that assumes that the luggage is permanently lost. I think, the poster was talking about some emergency expenses for toothpaste, underwear, and the like. It's usually some $25 per day, to be reimbursed after you sent in your receipts.

If there is a schedule change which does not allow you to fly the segments you have changed to, you should be able to call Nicolo and explain the situation and have him put you on the direct MXP-LCA flight. At least one would think . . .

EU Passenger Bill of Rights (here) (http://ec.europa.eu/transport/air/rules/rights/doc/2005_01_19_apr_poster_en.pdf) covers compensation for "damages caused by... or delay of your baggage on a flight by an EU airline..." But this does seem to be after the fact. Save receipts!

Just got off the phone with Nicolo. My situation was just the opposite. CY dropped my return from LCA to MXP on the day reserved (Tuesday). Next flight wasn't until Saturday. We were "protected" on an LCA-FCO-MXP. I asked if he could split the connection such that we would do LCA-FCO on the same day, but do FCO-MXP on the day before we returned to YYZ. He said it was a no-go, that it would constitute a date change. He is more than willing to work with us, just staying within the rules.

Can the dates be changed for any unused tickets past the travel date listed on the ticket (assuming no changes were made after the tickets were issued)?

Anyone know an answer to this?

I have tickets for travel next month, but I won't be able to go till sometime in Dec. I won't know my new travel date till end of November. So, if I don't travel next month & don't make any change to the travel dates now --- can I make changes later in November?

Thanks in advance.

You can change the dates after you know for sure, but it is advisable to contact Nicolo to cancel/remove the original dates. Doing so will not cause any issues, and just let him know that you will call him when you are ready w/ your new dates.

I had him clear my December flight, and I am trying to plan for 2007 flight (to be completed by beginning of April).

A gentle bump in this monster thread :-:

By the time you park at someone's house and take a taxi to/from the airport (I assume you would not ask them to meet you twice to take your car from you and bring it back to you), you would be better off just checking into a hotel for a night that allows up to 2 weeks free parking. They exist. Try places like Comfort Inn (about CAD$109 with up to 3 weeks parking), Sheraton (about the same price for about the same length of parking), or Doubletree (maybe a bit cheaper but maybe only 14 nights of parking).

I considered trying something similar to what you are asking - finding a friend in Toronto to leave my car at, but decided to go the hotel route instead. You don't even need to stay at the hotel if you don't want to arrive a day early - check in the day you arrive by car and fly out the same day. They will automatically check you out the following day by noon (I am planning on using my room due to my schedule and what I am doing before/after my Cyprus trip).

Thanks for the advice. I suppose that we will have to book a hotel if we have no other choice, but those prices would still put a pretty big dent in our savings and we were still really hoping that we could park at an obliging FTers home if anyone was willing to give us a parking space. We certainly wouldn't ask for any rides to the airport and would be happy using public transportation or using a taxi to the nearest public transportation. If anyone knows of anything, please let me know. Thanks.

Update: My luggage arrived the very next morning via Athens and delivered to my hotel. I also passed my the airport and they paid me whatever I spent on shaving, etc. It was only 27 pounds ($60) but they gave it w/o a problem. So far the trip is going good.. Agia Napa rocks!

Why not trying bidding on priceline. You could probably get a room for $60 or 70 and then just leave your car. If you bid on a place near the airport you can use their shuttle to get to the airport, saving the cab fare. I do it af DfW all the time, often times less than than $60, good luck.

Thanks, we thought about that, but we need 3 weeks and a day parking and we can't be sure to get that from priceline. Unless any YYZ FTers have any ideas (or of course an empty parking spot :) ) ?

Here's $25.95/wk + tax (http://www.directflightparking.com/promo_main.htm) which seems pretty cheap to me. And I'm sure there is better...that was just the first hit on google. Cyprus ain't cheap so brace yourself there.

No kidding. I hope you guys (that need cheap parking) have secured lodging (or are at least aware of the costs) and know about rental car prices, food, etc. It's not the most expensive place ever, but the USD is not strong there at all, and the prices are typically geared toward the British Pound, which the USD is not strong against either.

The poster martian is correct about using priceline and not being guaranteed a hotel that allows you to leave your car there during a trip, or even a hotel that has an airport shuttle. I would definitely do my homework before bidding on priceline if your main intent is to leave your car there.

I use priceline a fair amount for hotels near MSP airport but there are now enough hotels in all the zones near the airport that either don't allow you to leave your car or don't have an airport shuttle that if it my main intent to nab a hotel to reduce my car parking costs, I am in an iffy situation. I have found other alternatives as a fallback.

That coupon, while still a bit pricey might have worked for us, but unfortunately expires in Nov (we are travelling in Dec and Jan).

We will only be in Cyprus for 2 days so thanks for the heads up; we booked this flight to go home and spend the holidays with my family in the UK thinking it would be a cheap way to get there (via a Ryanair flight).

Thanks again. And of course again anyone with a parking spot in YYZ or any other ideas on how to park for cheap then please post or message me.

Just came back from my 3rd LCA trip. Here are a few specific travel comments.

It was the same/first/(only?) 764 (Amerigo Vespucci) used for the YYZ-FCO flights. Seats are very nice. Row 1 is best. AZ could actually configure the cabin to give a bit more space to all 4 rows. The digiplayers have pretty crappy movies and some of them are old. Single pole headphone jack for this vs. double jack for the audio programming (bring your own for the latter).

FCO-LCA flight was delayed by about 3 hours (apparently there was a change to the outbound a/c as a result). Asked the transfer desk about the delay and they volunteered meal/drink vouchers (entitled to by EU laws for tha length of flight delayed over 2 hours) which provided a salad, 1st course (pasta), main course, salad, dessert and a soft drink.

Food ex FCO on AZ is much better than ex MXP. Seems AZ is running low out of limoncello. They ran out of it ex YYZ and none available ex FCO. AZ has also run out of the sudtirol Mueller Thurgau. Catering and menus for both MXP and FCO flights are identical though menus have different codes for FCo and MXP.

Survey asking about the seats was passed out for the FCO-YYZ leg. We'll see if any Mille Miglia miles are awarded (they asked for account number).

Rome duty-free pricing seems to have changed. I swear that prices there in June had two prices (one for flights to outside the EU and one for within). Now there's only one price.

From Pittsburgh? Using the code "urban" you can get a round trip ticket to Toronto for $70. It's cheaper than the gas you'd use for one person and it is pretty reasonable for two.

Thanks for the code. That is the best option available to us so far I guess. I am just a little scared about Greyhound because a few times in the past they have refused us transportation on full buses: saying something like "we sell reservations not seats." So if the bus is full when it gets to your city you are out of luck and have to wait for the next bus. No bump vouchers either :td: So I guess we would have to plan on getting there a couple of days before the flight. But of course the Greyhound is the best option we have so far, so I'll stop dissing the hound :D

But again, if anyone in the YYZ area reads this and has a spare parking spot for a few weeks then please by all means let me know.

Thanks a million :-:

Do yourself a favor, and ask the FA's to test your empower/digEplayers as soon as you get onboard. The empower in both of our seats (I believe they were 2JK on the 764) was out of commission, and since that's what the digEplayers plug into, we didn't have IFE for the whole flight!

Hi All,

Question for those who have traveled both the FCO and YYZ flights:
I'm a big fan of looking out the window and would like to know on what side of the aircraft should I sit when heading YYZ-FCO, and MXP-YYZ. Also, MXP-LCA, vice versa; I'm a sucker for day dreaming while looking out the window :p

Any advice on views, and also seat locations would be greatly appreciated!

Not until Febuary. Flew FCO-YYZ on Monday.

Question for those who have traveled both the FCO and YYZ flights:
I'm a big fan of looking out the window and would like to know on what side of the aircraft should I sit when heading YYZ-FCO, and MXP-YYZ. Also, MXP-LCA, vice versa; I'm a sucker for day dreaming while looking out the window

Doesn't really matter.

Just a note, the desserts ex-FCO are very different than ex-YYZ or ex-MXP (cake/pastries).

On the FCO-YYZ trip, a selection of 3 gelatos/sorbets were available. Walnut gelato in a walnut (real shell), strawberry sorbet sandwiched in a frozen strawberry, and a chestnut gelato in a real chestnut shell.

Actually, ours were just the opposite. We had cakes/pastries to FCO and we had the 3 gelatos/sorbets ex-MXP. ;)

I think they serve one set of meals/deserts across the Atlantic one way and and another set on the return trip.

Must be a late summer variation then. Cakes and pastries YYZ-MXP-YYZ in late June (flew that route 2x in a week).

All the Canadian routes have the same menus, though there's a different codes ex-MXP and FCO (or to MXP and to FCO).

Nicolo just changed our November trip for a second time after Cyprus Air cancelled our LCA-FCO flight. Not sure if this would have counted as a change if we had not already made a change.

Another thing to watch out for is if you've already made your one change, and have been reticketed. Now you go to the airport to have your ticket stickered/reissued because of the Cyprus Air date changes. The IAD people said they had to charge me $20 per ticket (x4) to reissue since it was a second reissue, but only after she'd handed me the corrected tickets. I protested, telling her that I was not the cause for the tickets needing reissue, that I had not been informed of this charge ahead of time, that no mention had been made of it by the New York office when offering the airport reticketing as an option, and that I refused to pay it. I asked to speak to someone of authority. She returned a few minutes later with a gentleman in tow, and immediately said that "it was okay with no charge."

That was Nicolo's recommendation to me recently. Since the schedule is somewhat spotty in the fall on some of these routes there is the possibility of more changes before we travel in early November. I'm going to wait until a week or two before our travel date to go out to YYZ and get the tix stickered.

Just got back from my vacation and had a blast in Cyprus! For those of you thinking of spending only a day or so there, I would recommend reconsidering that decision.

Stayed there for about a week and had a great time. Thought Cyprus was pretty cheap actually. Kept a budget of about $100 a day (~50 pounds) excluding hotel/car and was able to stay in that w/o a problem. I stayed in Agia Napa and went out drinking and dining every night. Dinner would always consists of the full appetizers, meal and deserts along with drinks throughout and the bill would come up to about 20-24 pounds ($40-$50 which is not bad at all). They had specials at all the bars and the beaches were great. If anyone has any questions, etc.. feel free to email me.

Also, had a question for all: Does anyone have a friend that traveled on Sat 9/9? I met this guy who said he was a friend of an FT'er here and since our flight was delayed to FCO, he decided to only check in his luggage on FCO (rather than all the way to LCA). I ended up making my connection (although w/o luggage), but he did not make it as he had to retrieve his luggage, etc (for which there was not enough time). So just wondering how he ended up making out?

Our flight back into EWR was delayed by an hour which made us miss our connection to YYZ (but that was all good since we live 15 minutes from EWR : ) ) - we just told the AZ agents that we'll take care of things from here and they said it was our decision and since we never checked in for our Air Canada flight, they have no hassles if we decide to find our own way home. We of course didn’t tell them that home was only 15 minutes away :p

(They actually felt relieved as it seems that AZ and AC aren't partners so they couldnt even see my AC flight in their system. So once I told them not to worry about it, they were glad not to)

Nice pics, thanks for those. I noticed the one pic of the headphones provided. The CY a/c are incorrectly labelled as A319. It's an A320s (2 pairs of overwing exits vs. single pair on A319s). The CY A319s have "real" BC seats.

Yes, as I posted a few weeks ago, I was charged this for my initial (and only) reissue after I had changed the dates with Nicolo. I protested, but eventually paid because I did not have time to wait any longer at Dulles that day. I need to call Alitalia and get the charge refunded.

It took about 10 days (7 bus. days) for the miles to fully post in my account. After about 4 bus. days, a notation appeared in my WorldPerks account stating that my flights had been received and were under "internal review", but they ended up posting just fine and as expected.

I recently faxed the copies to MM so we'll see how long it takes there. Of course it's totally unsat that it has not posted into their own program, so we'll see how long it takes now.

One concern I have is that the LCA-FCO leg the boarding pass is on CY stock with the CY flight number listed, not the AZ codeshare flight number. Hope they don't stick me for that.

CY operated flights do not earn NW miles. It's the whole "no miles on a partner of a partner" rule.

To get miles for your transatlantic segments, fax NW a copy of the BPs and your receipt.

Yes, I will be posting some info shortly. Was in LCA a couple days ago... now in Interlaken. I hope to provide some additional insights when I get a moment to put them together.

But to briefly say what I now know:
A bus is available to LCA town, 70p, and 20 minutes, but last one leaves 17:55. Bus back to LCA leaves @ 7:30. Route 21 and 24, I think.

Buses to Pafos, Limassol, Nicosia are available as well, but may not make it in time at the airport.

Ayia Napa is pretty much a party/resort town, per the locals.

Check out bookings.com for some relatively low priced accomodation.

Do not stay at Larco Hotel if you can stay at Les Palmiers (credit fluegelwesen previous post for the info) Rate varies from 15 CYP to 23CYP when I plugged in certain dates.

Be careful of the "bait and switch" on CY flights that could cause difficulty accessing the lounge at LCA.

From the website:
The Inter-City Buses (green color buses) provide bus transportation services from Larnaca to Nicosia, Limassol, Ayia Napa, Protaras and Paphos (pending) and inverse on a daily basis but Sundays. We provide pre-arranged bus transportation services from Larnaca and Paphos Airports to any hotel in South Cyprus and we also provide pre-arranged bus transportation services for planned excursions/trips to South Cyprus

I made a mistake in saying Pafos, that is not available yet. However go to their site and you can see the times (I don't think it works for FT'ers flying in from Italy though).

http://www.intercitybuses.com/

I also took a picture of the Larnaca Town bus schedule from the airport, but don't have any place to host it. If any FT'er can, please let me know and I'll send you the jpg for you to load.

As for the bait and switch, Cyprus Airlines swapped an aircraft with a 1st class cabin for one that is economy only. Throughout the entire 20 plus minutes I was stuck waiting for her to process my checkin, she did not mention anything about this.

She didn't seem to know how to process my ticket and spoke to her colleague several times (I wish I knew Italian). She finally had to bust out some notebook she had in her purse to process me. I'd ask occassionally if there was any problem, she'd just say no problem. My boarding pass had the word ECONOMY written on it.

As a result, even though I was given a lounge pass, I had a very difficult time convincing the lounge matrons to let me in. I did not know about the aircraft change until after the lounge matron told me why I had ECONOMY stamped on my bp and that she is NOT supposed to let me in. After some phone calls, the let me in.

In the end, not a big deal, but I do wonder whether I will be able to get DL credit as biz or as economy only.

Good luck to all.

I can almost guarantee you you'll receive Economy credit on DL. I didn't have a bait-n-switch experience, but was booked in Economy even though I purchased a 'D' ticket. I pointed this out to DL, asked for biz class credit (since that's what I purchased, regardless where I sat), but only received economy credit.

I'm not complaining too much, because DL also credited me my trans-atlantic legs, even though I didn't ask for it (I credited those legs to another airline). They saw those legs from the AZ Ticket Receipt (the last flight 'coupon' in the AZ paper ticket booklet) I faxed in, and decided to credit me everything... ^

I haven't made any changes to my ticket. My current travel dates are in November. Assuming that I don't make any changes & don't travel in Nov/2006 -- can I make changes later to travel sometime next year?

Just call Nicolo and let him know that you don't intend to travel on those dates, and you will call back at a later time to reserve the flights. Keep in mind travel has to be completed by the beginning of April (someone will correct me on the exact date) and you are going to need to make sure they have biz class seats for the flights you want. You could always go in Y, but that seems to defeat the purpose ;-)

My December flight is currently cleared, and holding a blank date on my PNR apparently. I'm going to call him once I figure out when to go, if I should go. Currently in Europe on the first of two RT.

Most of the basic questions can be found on page 1 of the thread. There's some info that is no longer relevant, but still has good stuff to know.

MEA is flying LCA-BEY...don't know if they are flying any other cyprus-bey routings. i check a few days ago for a ticket at the beginning of november, and i got 177 CYP, which is rather steep for such a short flight.

Lots of people didn't participate in the list, but certainly participated in the deal. You might be able to piece together a more accurate count by going through all the posts as many people made comments during & after travel. That shouldn't take you too long. ;)

Yeah, I saw that. Pretty extortionate price for a tiny hop.

Are there any ferries perhaps? or efficient ways to redeem a low number of miles? Anyone do this?

There used to be ferries, but from what I determined through much online searching is that they no longer operate and if they do, the service is very spotty and unreliable.

I was planning on taking a trip to BEY, but my family and I decided against it due to the "crisis." So now we are going to IST instead. I had looked into flights on CY or MEA (don't know the code) and they seemed to both be about the same price when I was looking (June maybe for dates in Oct). I believe the price was about $250-$300US.

What is the concensus on actions for dealing with the Air Cyprus schedule changes? My flight on 1/1/07 no longer exists, and there does not appear to be a way to connect in to Italy to make it back to YYZ (or JFK, which is my original - and preferred - gateway).

It seems like I can just call Nicolo and get the flights rescheduled, pending availability. Is that right? I didn't change my dates yet, though I did call once to confirm that my flights were still ok and not messed up by Orbitz.

Oct 18 LCA-MXP (economy)
Oct 22 MXP-LCA (business)

My question relates to your experience with the Boeing 767-200 Passenger (762). That is what plane is listed on our tickets. The corporate section of the Alitalia site only lists the 767-300 in their fleet. From what I have read, the YYZ-FCO run offers the better plane. I should also mention that neither my wife nor I have ever travelled business class on any airline... though much in economy! I've checked seatguru.com and it doesn't list our plane for Alitalia either. Google is tight-lipped on the subject as well. Curious to how the sleeping conditions and video options will be for the flight! Also any comments on the Cyprus Airways Airbus 320?

We are getting ultra excited, I find as our trip gets closer, I keep up to date with every post for any tips or hints provided by other travellers. Thanks everyone! ^

I didn't notice too much difference between CY J and Y seating. I think the seat pitch in J is about 34" and Y is 32. Get exit row seating on the Y leg and you'll never know the difference.

The A319 is a different story. it has real J seating vs. the convertible sating on the 320

No one's over-analyzing anything. S/he just wants to know what it's like up there, and it's a perfectly acceptable question to ask, regardless of how much people paid for the ticket. Will you get over this thing about how we all paid next to nothing? Do you realize just how many people wouldn't have dreamed of going to Italy and Cyprus on this trip, and just how many were able to fly C for the first time? Get over it. We all got a deal. So what.

Now to the question at hand: I don't recall if AZ is flying the retro-fitted 767 YYZ-FCO anymore; I know they were for the summer schedule, but it might be back to the older version/seats. And at some point in the schedule, I guess they stop flying YYZ-FCO altogether. In any case, the newer configuration has a "shell" like you might have seen in many of the newer business class offerings. I found the seat to be very comfortable, especially if you're a "side-sleeper" like I am. The older 763 I also found to be very comfortable. It's still electronic, which is nice, but it doesn't have its own shell and does recline into peoples' space a bit, but it's not a huge problem. I was surprised how far it actually did recline, and it was comfortable enough for sleep. I think anyone concerned about being able to sleep should be fine on either aircraft.

Agreed that there is not much difference and in fact, I found the pasta dishes I had on my 3 Y segments better than the really nasty fish I had (and didn't eat) on my one J segment. There are worse places to be than on CY in an exit row.

Absolutely nothing. Unless you are the type that hears that one bad thing happened somewhere and then figure that the whole area is like that.

Heck, I won't let my kid go to school, the maill, or anywhere else outside the house because I have read bad stories about things that have happened in similar places.

Anyway, back to the topic. For what it is worth, I am finally figuring out my availability and am calling this week or next to change my tickets and to go enjoy LCA in December (not the best time, but it is when I can go). It will be a rough way to spend a week, but I think I'll somehow survive.

I haven't gotten around to updating the Trip Reports thread with any of my experiences, but I flew back from LCA last Thursday and then drove to Washington. My route was down the QEW from near YYZ, across into the US at Niagara Falls using Rte. 405 to I-190, to I-90 in Buffalo west to I-79 in Erie, then down to the PA turnpike, I-70 into Maryland, to I-270 at Frederick.

As I thought making the entire drive after an early a.m. wakeup in Milan might be overly ambitious, I elected to overnight just off I-79 near Pittsburgh.

The total drive time back to Arlington was a little less than ten hours with food and gas stops: 5:45 on Thursday night and 4:00 on Friday morning (leaving after morning rush hour in PIT had subsided). Leaving YYZ about 3 p.m., I did hit stop-and-go traffic in Mississauga and Oakville in Ontario on the QEW which probably added fifteen to thirty minutes to my total drive time.

I think my notation for the drive times in my last post was a little confusing, as it sounds like it could be times of day. Sorry about that :)

5 hours and 45 minutes on the road from YYZ to PIT; and then 4 hours from PIT to WAS.

There was no line at the Canada 405/Interstate 190 border crossing, but Customs did check my trunk, and then ask questions about my visit to LCA and FT, so it may have taken three or four minutes to get across. I had been told this was the fastest crossing to take if traveling from YYZ.

Oct 3, 06, 5:43 pm
Incidentally, if anyone is driving from DTW, I made that drive on my way to YYZ, and it took about 4.5 hours, crossing at Port Huron. I drove pretty close to the speed limit in Canada, however, as I had dealer/temporary plates on my car and was a little worried that the Ontario fuzz might single me out for looking a little different.

Thanks :-:

The border crossings can be hit or miss. Sometimes it is 45 minutes, sometimes there is literally no line. Typically, it is a 5 to 10 minute wait, but if you are crossing at a busy time like a Friday before a long weekend, it can be significantly longer. Personally, I always check the crossing times at the 3 Buffalo / Niagara Falls crossings (Queenston-Lewiston, Rainbow Bridge and Peace Bridge) and make a decision about which way to go based on which has the least backup. You can do this on your web enabled cellphone @ http://wap.gc.ca Otherwise, I'll call someone and ask them to check this site when I am getting close to the turnoff for the Queenston-Lewiston (the first bridge when coming from Toronto) http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/general/times/menu-e.html

I actually forgot to send a note to upper management at AZ after I flew telling them how much I appreciate his work on this. Glad I checked back on this thread!

I was in NYC in mid-August, a few days before my newly changed departure ex-YYZ to LCA, so I did the reticketing in person. He was flexible on the time I came to the office, he took care of my tickets right away, and was smiling and helpful even though it was lunchtime for everyone else in the office. (He'd told me anytime was fine, and not until we got there did I realize the time I'd picked for our appointment was lunchtime for most AZ people).

Just wanted to let those who might be interested know that, as has been reported previously, the folks in the Botticelli lounge were more than happy to drop the LCA segment once we reached MXP (the Toronto ticketing desk would not begin to entertain the notion). We were only interested in Italy this time around.

Also, YYZ-MXP had "new" Magnifica seats, i.e., personal Dig-E-Players, pod-style seats. MXP-YYZ had "old" cloth seats which we actually thought were more comfortable.

I love FlyerTalk! A hearty thanks to the immortal rosj, Alitalia and Nicolo for allowing an outstanding trip.

Is it correct to say you were to fly YYZ-MXP-LCA and dropped LCA while at the Bottecicelli lounge in MXP? I have to go YYZ-MXP-FCO-LCA, and return LCA-MXP a couple days later. I am thinking of trying to drop my LCA segment when I get to MXP, but still fly to FCO. Were the folks there friendly to that idea? As a side note, how did you approach it? Anything particular you mentioned or just say you would like to drop the LCA segment and return on the same date?

Thanks in advance.

My sense is that the folks in Italy were treating us as legitimate business class customers (the ticketing desk (as opposed to the check-in desk) in YYZ was another story, though still polite). I simply went up to the counter in MXP/Botticelli and said that we had originally planned on seeing Cyprus but that we had now decided to spend a few extra days in Milan and then keep our original return to YYZ. I then handed her our tickets. She said it would be no problem and then began making a change on her computer. She was actually apologetic that she didn't think we would be able to get a refund on our unused segments. I said that that would be fine while trying not to smile too much. Then both of the ladies at the desk offered suggestions for spending a couple of days around the lakes (Angera on Lake Maggiore is very cool). Magnifica!

Just going on the friendly and helpful vibe at the Botticelli lounge, I would think it probable that most any reasonable change/drop you could think of making could be done at the MXP or FCO lounge in Italy. I even wondered after if I could have tried for a direct MXP-states routing on the way back. I can always ask for more!

Perhaps if you were looking to finalize your plans before departure you could even call the business-class lounges in Italy directly?

Best of luck and enjoy!

ROME Italian Premier Romano Prodi said Tuesday that the situation at state-controlled Alitalia SpA was "out of control" and promised a new plan by January to save the cash-strapped airline from bankruptcy, Italian news agencies reported.

Prodi and key ministers were meeting with union leaders to discuss the airline's future amid widening financial losses and a series of wildcat strikes that have forced Alitalia to cancel scores of flights in recent weeks.

Prodi told union leaders that the airline's situation was "completely out of control, and I don't see a parachute," ..........no more according to TOS

(Hi FourWheels !)

Yes, I spent some time looking at AZ winter schedule,
preparing 3 back-to-back itins to request from Nicolo.

I overnighted MXP 3 times on my first ticket last summer,
so am trying to pass through FCO for forced overnights this time,
although there is a little less frequency.

Still, the triple run is 11 days long,
if there is increasing chance of getting stranded,
or mileage not going through, it is less attractive.
We'll see......

the plan:
TUE JAN 02 YYZ-MXP AZ#1
WED JAN 03 MXP-LCA overnight LCA
THU JAN 04 LCA-FCO overnight FCO
FRI JAN 05 FCO-YYZ 3 hour turn YYZ
YYZ-MXP AZ#2
SAT JAN 06 MXP-LCA overnight LCA
SUN JAN 07 LCA-FCO overnight FCO
MON JAN 08 Day in Rome
TUE JAN 09 FCO-YYZ 3 hour turn YYZ
YYZ-MXP AZ#3
WED JAN 10 MXP-LCA overnight LCA
THU JAN 11 LCA-FCO overnight FCO
FRI JAN 12 FCO-YYZ

My original 2 back-to-back reservations
came into/out of YYZ from/to MXP.
I assumed the same plane turns around and goes back to MXP,
so if it arrives late, it will leave late.

But coming in from FCO, and departing to MXP,
I could have the problem you describe.

For that matter, I assume one plane goes MXP-YYZ-MXP
and another goes FCO-YYZ-FCO. That could be incorrect.

Thanks for the "heads up" as my old boss used to call it....
I shall ponder further. Overnight in YYZ isn't that expensive.
Just makes an already tedious run even longer.

or the Maple Leaf Lounge. (No checked luggage).
You must clear Canada customs and immigration. All passengers will board a bus to the main T1, go through the formalities, clear security, and then bus it back to the infield terminal.

We are flying from YYZ to MXP in Business Class, then a 5 hour layover, and then coach to LCA. Will we be able to get into any lounge in MXP?

Yes Indeed. The Alitalia lounge. Just show your biz class stubs from YYZ-MXP flight. Bring something to read, not much to do in the lounge.

Also not much to eat or drink, and not many seats.

I wouldn't rely on the staff in FCO lounge to be able to do anything. Fellow LCAer asked if they could put him in J on LCA seg, instead of the confirmed Y. 5 hours later, after numerous requests, they said they were still "working on it" and we virtually had to grab the BP back so as to not miss the plane.

with all the uncertainty surrounding alitalia's future operations and solvency, i am thinking of moving up my trip to early november. two questions:

1) is there any place i can find alitalia winter schedule to both FCO and MXP? i tried alitalia website, but it is barely intelligable.

2) is there any way to check availability before calling niccolo? i'd rather have it all set up rather than hassling the guy on the phone....

Thanks! :)

And to add interest, Times reports:

THE apparent sabotage of two Alitalia planes could have caused a major tragedy, the head of the Italian pilots’ union said yesterday on the eve of emergency talks to save the debt-ridden state-controlled airline.
Two MD80 aircraft — the backbone of the Alitalia fleet — were damaged in a hangar while undergoing maintenance at Naples airport last week. The incidents appear to be linked to the talks between Romano Prodi, the Prime Minister, the management and unions on job cuts and investment that come after months of strikes and protests over restructuring plans.

Airport officials said that cables were cut in the tail section of one aircraft and the seal around the rear door of another was ripped a day later. Alitalia said that the sabotage did not put flight safety at risk because it was spotted in time by maintenance workers.

Fabio Berti, head of the Italian pilots’ association, said that the attacks were extremely serious and could have caused a massacre. It was unclear who the perpetrators were, but worrying that they had access to a “super-protected” area.

Signor Berti said that it was not the first time that Alitalia planes had been sabotaged. Some reports had suggested that sabotage was part of a strategy of tension to raise the stakes on the eve of today’s meeting but, Signor Berti told La Stampa: “I cannot believe anyone would be so irresponsible.” The Naples prosecutor is investigating the incidents, which trade union officials said reflected a drop in standards of security and maintenance.

This is not making me feel good. Strike talks? Sabotage? It is starting to sound a bit James Bondish? :td: And not the cool James Bondish I like. Perhaps I should shut my computer down and wait for the warm sun of the Med Sea to hit my face. We leave on Friday, Oct 13.
Apparently they had a strike on Oct 9? Hadn't heard about that till now?

Has anyone ever missed flights due to strikes or work stoppages? and how does your flight itin get resolved?

The strike got cancelled before it happened. We flew home on the 9th without incident.

Yes, I did. I was able to score the Days Hotel & Conference Center (30 Carlton Street) for free as part of the BRG. My stay took place a little more than a month ago. Couldn't tell you what site showed me the cheaper rate - but I know it took a lot of digging around - many sites don't show the rates in Canadian Dollars...
Good luck - it CAN be done!

I would go direct to Nicolo to get this fixed. Orbitz can only cause problems.

I would like to ask again,
has anyone successfully done a same day turn at YYZ
putting 2 of these tix together back-to-back?
.......(or tried and failed!)

I realize it is risky, but seems to me reasonable odds it would work,
even now knowing I must clear into Canada before checking in.

The downside risk is actually not that terrible in my case,
I would just return home on the changeable award ticket that takes me up to YYZ.

Surely some one has already tried to do this?

I did such a turn in June. No problems as 1) the 1st MXP-YYZ flight arrived reasonably on time), 2) customs/immigration line was short/nearly non-existent, 3) made the bus with almost no waiting, 4) wasn't held up by customs.

However, I was blessed. That MXP-YYZ flight was less-delayed than the subsequent MXP-YYZ 3 days later and a FCO-YYZ last month (delayed on arrival by about 1/2 and 1 hr respectively).

Worse case is that you lose your connecting flight (and forfeit the ticket?) back to LCA.
