ok, so it doesn't seem to be THAT huge of a deal, but after searching exhaustively for flights to central/eastern europe for august, and finding nothing really cheaper than $1,100. I found continental's route to cologne, germany was only $800. Tried a couple of other bigger cities, and it gets down to $700. That's after taxes.
I know that still sounds like a lot, but it's a $300 savings over everything else I was finding. Just thought I'd put it out there if anyone cares.

Hi there,
as I'm from Germany I would give you a hand on that!
Just give me your details and I will have a small search made!
Departure Date and Location (maybe alternates), favorite destinations (and alternates) and return date....
Best wishes,

Flying to Florida in the summer is cheap so you can get a good deal by combining a domestic ticket with one of these low cost airlines to Germany.
Not overly familiar with them but they seem to cater to the German inbound Florida traffic.

all of those come out to be more expensive than what I found.
Continental is $800 after taxes. I priced out the 3 flights you mentioned, they come to over 1k after taxes and the like.

What was the other bigger city that you found for $700? I will be traveling to Germany in July to do a race in Frankfurt - my issue with Continental is they will charge me $80 each way to bring my bike but if the savings is enough, it will still make sense to go pay that fee. Thanks

I'm flying Aer Lingus from JFK (other options abound). I booked well over a month ago, so I'm paying something like 517 US all in. From Dublin, I'm just using Ryanair, or whatever. Hope this helps

I may only recommend you to start searching and booking that flight as prices tend to go extremely up the shorter the departure day is ahead....

Just found a flight in July:
11th - 26th from JFK to DUS at 645$ all in,
on LTU / LT, a german charter carrier.
On www.ltu.com you may as well try to use "Biet & Flieg"/bid & fly and bid a lower amount. YOu may get the flight at 499$ or 549$ all in ;-)
I don't know about addtl. charges for a bicycle though....
enjoy
