Ok...unless this is an April Fools Joke??? I just watched BBC World's MidEast Business Report which focused on ELAL and Israir...
When BBC interview the Israir CEO she is sitting in front of a poster of the Israir Logo....when they interview the ELAL Chairman Izzy Borovich, he is sitting at his desk with......would you believe it...a DIECAST Model of an LY Airbus A340-600!!!!!!!!!!! WHAT?????
Surely this is absolutely ridiculous...didn't anyone in his office notice? If Boeing see this they'd be pretty peeved!!
If you want to see for yourself, it repeated on 'BBC World' tonight, look out for 'World Middle East Business Report'
Unbelievable

The question is - why would he not do it?
You and the others know a lot more about this troika than I do, but my impression is that this relationship has always been about the 'threat' that they might go Airbus, but that LY always goes back to Boeing when it comes down to pulling the trigger, so to speak (?)

I think you're missing the point a little... This isn't about the Airbus (will they, won't they) it's about having a Model of a Competitor Manufacturer sitting on the Desk of a Chairman who is being interviewed by a worldwide Media Network that’s broadcasted to every country in the world.
YOU JUST DON'T DO THAT!
A) Its disrespectful if you are an all Boeing fleet and they are your Exclusive manufacturer
B) The damn thing doesn’t exist...I mean..you can't even buy an Airbus A340-600 in LY colors from Gemini Jets...or whoever makes Diecast models.
Basically the whole thing is a faux pas on ELAL behalf

Uh, jonnye, you live in Ra'ananna, right?
Then you know as well as I do that things about which many people would say "you just don't do that" are not in any way off limits to an Israeli. (Are you Israeli? :D )

Why? Just because El Al only flies Boeings now doesn't mean they can't fly the competitors planes in the future.
Most of their 767s are from the early 80s (the others are from the early 90s). Their 742s are close to retirement as well, and part of their 744 stock was bought 2nd hand from SIA. Their only new big planes are the four 777s.
Looks like over half of their long haul fleet needs to be replaced in the not-too-distant future (the next 10 years or so), and I really don't see why they shouldn't be allowed to buy some Airbuses - or at least use the Airbus option in their negotiations with Boeing. That's how competition in a free market works.

The Airbus A340 is a very unprofitable aircraft and Virgin regret buying them. Anyway there is no way LY will ever operate non US aircraft unless they have to like the ATR operated by Israir and Arkia.

Groan....this is a typical Airbus vs. Boeing argument statement. The fact is that over 300 have been delivered or are on order. VS is only one airline and there are many other mainstream airlines that appear to be quite happy with the Airbuses that they operate. We all know that the Airbus vs Boeing situation at El Al is 99% political and has little to do with aircraft reliability or performance.

And so if EL AL goes Airbus? Are Airbus non-kosha all of a sudden? What is this false politically motivated situation of buying only Boeing - I just don't understand-probably never will. Personally I prefer Airbus on longhaul the A340 is a fine Aircraft in my experience, much quieter that 777.
Oh well what will be will be

LY are about to decide on their future aircraft and they are flirting with both Airbus (A350) (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=540964) and Boeing (787). Now that they are privatised and run as a profitable private company, I can't see a political reasoning to buy Boeing over Airbus - like what happened in the past. The decision between the 2 should be pure business.

You make it sound like having the C.E.O. of Intel have a big model of an AMD processor in his office. LY are not owned by Boeing - they are a customer. They do not have any agreement with Boeing about being their "Exclusive manufacturer". It's a business and political decision of LY and the Israeli govt that can change at any time.
By the way, I'm sure that if you are a C.E.O. fo an airline, Gemini Jets will paint any plane in your colors. I'm sure that airbus will for that as well ... :D

LOL :D
...I think I went little far with the whole...'You just don't do that' part.
Anyways, I just thought it was a little funny seeing the A340-600 next to him in ELAL colors.
Personally I think LY should pick up a couple of A380's for the TLV-NYC route, those flights are always full, regardless of Low/High season, same with Hong Kong.
