I am planning my airfare for a trip to Lijiang, China, where I'll walk Tiger Leaping Gorge and travel by bus to end up in Kunming.
From Kunming, I'll fly to Chiang Mai (probably) and fly on to BKK. From BKK, I have a great return option flying business class back to LAX for only about $870 on TG and KE with a near 24-hour layover in NRT, which I want. This is related to the "Cheap C-class Ex CMB" thread in "Mileage Run".
What doesn't look so good are my options flying o/w from LAX to either PEK or CAN. From Beijing or Guangzhou, I can use ctrip.com to book deeply discounted domestic fare to Lijiang. However, ctrip doesn't book international travel to China. Expedia wants $584 to $652 o/w from LAX to PEK or CAN, which seems high for a cattle car flight. Will a consolidator or asian-specialist travel agent be cheaper and also able to book me thru LAX to CAN to KMG to LJG? (ITA software shows this rounting is doable entirely on China Southern metal, but neigher Expedia nor ctrip can book it thru as a single trip.)
