Howdy. My wife has just decided to attend the American Association for Cancer Research meeting in DC at the Convention Center. Dates are 3/31-4/5.
Would like something on the Metro, not terribly far away and not terribly expensive. Safety is important, as she may be out alone a bit.
We are members of HHilton and Starwood, but those aren't extremely important considerations. Hotwire/Priceline ideas welcome, too. Thanks for any tips.

Wherever you decide, do it quickly as this is the "Prime-time" for the Cherry blossoums. Also do not expect to find many deals for this time of year.

If you do a search of the WDC forum you will find a number of threads about DC hotels and their plusses and minusses. That said most of NW DC is safe and she won't have a problem.

Just throw bids in the general areas on priceline close to the center.. do it today. I would not stay east of the center, as there is not too much food over there.
a relatively new addition to the area is the Circulator bus. Has 2 routes(another comming) both center on the convention center, and cost $1.
Up 7th st, and back down 9th,
Union station to Gtown.
frequency seems to be under 10 min, even on sunday at midday.

While not necessarily meeting the "close" requirement, you might need to expand your search to include Pentagon City and Crystal City in Arlington, Virginia, if you hope to find something for less than $200 per night. Both are stops on the Yellow line, which goes directly to the Convention Center (about 15 minutes travel time), and have large numbers of hotels, including members of Hilton and Starwood. They're also safe neighborhoods (though Crystal City is pretty dead at night, new restaurants and redevelopment notwithstanding). Spring in DC is a really tough for finding reasonable room rates, unfortuately. Good luck.

This would be my recommendation as well. This area will usually be the cheapest even in more expensive time and is safe (as is much of DC really) and relatively quiet but enough around all of those areas such as dining etc. I have not stayed in Crystal City but when I was there last they had quite a few dining places around and it looked like a pretty nice area. I have stayed in the other areas and they are fine so if you can get to the convention center via the yellow line then those areas are as good as any if you ask me.

Thanks to all for the excellent advice.
She finally decided to pay some extra to stay right near the Convention Center, and picked up somebody's cancelled $249-per-night reservation at the nearby Hyatt, which apparently has been sold out forever.
Appears to be a decent rate for the location/dates.
Will use your recommendations for a future trip.

Next time you might want to check craigslist. They sometimes have apartment rooms by the week and also bed and breakfast rooms downtown by the day. Don't know their load schedule for spring though.
