From the Honolulu Advertiser:
As O'ahu residents dug out and dried out yesterday, weather forecasters offered hope that the rains that have hammered the island for weeks are moving out to sea.
"The threat from flash flooding is diminishing rapidly," National Weather Service forecaster Robert Ballard said. "We're not completely out of the woods, but we're on the right path."

What's the weather like generally around Memorial Day on Kauai? I spent 9 very wet days in late February, then three nice ones in Honolulu. Then my sister spent 9 more wet days in Kauai in March. The "typical" weather around Memorial Day throughout the Hawaiian islands is dry, sunny and temps in the mid 80's day time, 70's at night and humidity levels around 70%....unless there are "kona" winds, then it warmer.

"Should" be normal weather. Kona winds and that kind of rain has been over for several weeks. What we've had here (in Kauai) of recent is mostly mauka showers with trade wind conditions. In other words, occasional and not lasting rain. Today for example, rain has probably started and stopped 10 times or more, but never persisted more than briefly.

I don't really trust weather.com or wunderground.com reports on Hawaii weather. Any sort of Mauka (mountain) showers, and they report it as an occasional shower for the entire island.
You'll notice that most of these showers are isolated:
http://www.srh.noaa.gov/data/forecasts/HIZ021.php?warncounty=HIC009&city=Kihei
In addition to that, if it rains, you can always drive over from Ka'anapali to Wailea, where it'll likely not be raining. Hope this helps!

I've read the weather threads but didn't find an answer to my question.
How much rain should I expect in late Feb/early March? I know it varies by location around the island. Will be staying at Hilton in Lihue for first part of trip and contemplating Princeville vs. Sheraton for the last few nights. (Is Sheraton a better location for March?) Or should I plan this trip for October?
Mary2e
Oct 23, 06, 4:31 pm
Plan the Sheraton for Oct. It's definitely rainer/cloudier in the winter in Princeville.
If you want to do both in Feb/Mar I would do Princeville first and then Lihue. In case the weather isn't the best for the first part of your vacation, you'll be left with a better memory :).
You can expect more rain on all the islands in Feb/March.
I just came home last week and we barely had any rain at all in Lihue during the day. It clouded up a bit, but nothing bothersome.
BUT - we had NO tradewinds at all. I never thought I'd see a palm tree 50 yds from the ocean completely motionless, but I did. For almost my entire stay there were no winds at all.
This can happen at any time of year, but I was told it happens more in the summer.

Just returned from Kaua'i and the Big Island. First day there, it rained like hell all over Kaua'i and rain was forecast for the whole week - however, the sun was out the next day and except for a few drops here and there, it turned out to be a perfect trip.
Unless a front or other weather event changes things, localized showers occur frequently throughout the islands...just hop in the car and drive until you see sunshine.
This past week, the front that rained out our first day dumped a pile of water on O'ahu and Maui - but dried out by the time it arrived at our next stop, the Big Island.

BTW, there is a Hilton in Lihue?? Did they take over another property?
There was, wasn't & is a Hilton on Kaua'i? Confusing, let me explain.
Near Lihu'e Hilton built a modest property circa 1982 and they operated it until Inik'i hit Kaua'i in 1992.
The property has a couple hundred rooms, arranged in a V shape all nominally aimed toward the ocean (which is not to say all have ocean view). Originally it was quite a modest property with one coffee shop type eating place, one nicer place, a single bar / nighclub which never really made much of an impact. Outside were three smallish pools and a fabulously sandy (if somewhat wave pounded) beach - no doubt the highlight of the property.
Post 'the storm' the property was sold to an investor group who put a modest amount of money in and branded it a Radisson which is had been for some years. The major thing this group did, aside from spiffing up, was to add a beachside 'lagoon' between the pools and the ocean which made for a nice float and much better views than you had from the pool (where in an unfortunate design decision the snack shop blocked any possible view of the ocean).
About a year ago, Hilton returned to purchase the property back. They have promised another round of spiffing up - and they've been working steadily in recent months. I haven't seen the finished product. No way however can they bring this property on par with say the Waikoloa with just a little paint and furniture. My expectation is that it will remain something quite different (distant?) from other Hilton properties in the state. Mind you, that's okay with me, but I gotta wonder whether guests who book 2 or 3 island trips including the Hilton Kaua'i will feel like they bought the same product on all the islands.
Oh, the location is IMHO one of the best on the island. Truly halfway between north and south, you'll spend hours less on the highway over they course of a typical week.

Thanks, Lihue1k, for the information. I got curious as to exactly where this is, so I did a search and found this. Sounds like the grounds, ultimately, may be pretty nice, but dangerous, as you might have implied, for ocean swimming.
It took a weather thread to drag this meteorologist out of a year of lurkdom!
Although I've visited many times, I've never lived in Hawaii so I cannot speak to idiosyncracies in local weather patterns, but it's my impression that February-March will normally have more rain than October, and Princeville will have more rain than Lihue, which in turn will have a little more rain than Poipu. Normally during March, Hawaii will see several strong trade wind events with greatest rainfall over the north-facing and east-facing slopes of the islands. Not being a resident, I don't know if rains on the north side are all day affairs or if it's just 20-30 minute bouts of showers. On the flip side, the extremely few hurricanes that Hawaii gets are in the fall (the last ones to hit Kauai were Iwa in November 1982 and Iniki in September 1992). Before that, you have to go back to 1959 to find a hurricane that hit Kauai. I worry about even mentioning those hurricanes lest it keep you from going then, since they are very rare.
Having said all that, I've been to Kauai a bunch of times in the January-March time frame, and never had to deal with significant rains. Certainly there have been times when a day or two during my stay has been rather showery, but not too often. If you wish to avoid rainy days, you'll certainly have a better shot of avoiding rain if you're in Poipu. Also, the flooding earlier this year was very unusual (fortunately I was on the Big Island at the time!), and according to the National Weather Service Honolulu web site, such a pattern hadn't been seen since 1951. So odds are you'll have a great time whether you go in March or October!

I personnally wouldn't be too worried about the rain, since as has been discussed here before, the rains this past spring were mostly out of the ordinary. I'd think you'd be compromising your trip if you chose Waikiki over Kauai as the former is not as peaceful as the latter--not to mention that IMHO, Kauai is more of a Hawaii paradise than the urbanized Oahu.

On the summits of Haleakala and Mauna Kea, Mauna Loa, (10,000 - 13,000 feet), it definitely gets below 40, and even below freezing, in the rainy season. Of course, it gets darn chilly up there even in the dry season!

Yeah, a week ago or so ago it was surprisingly cold on Kauai. A few years ago, I remember needing a blanket for a chilly morning or two in January, but this was the first time I was ever actually cold in Hawaii in the daytime! And April, no less. The Honolulu paper said they tied a record one morning in Honolulu -- albeit "only" 61 degrees. :) Things seemed to creep back to normal as the week went on, but it was still a little cooler than what I expect in Hawaii.
I guess "global cooling" hit the Islands for a little while. They say this month may be the coolest April in America in more than 100 years. I guess the Hawaiian temperatures will play a small part. :)

Mahalo for your kind wishes. The whole State got hammered, not just us. Roads washed out; power poles down; roofs damaged; at least one house swept off it's foundation (in Kula, Maui). No loss of life! A few minor injuries.
The sun is coming out......bumbye, we'll clean it up.
Mahalo!
May have spoken a little too soon! (The wind and rain is back!)
Hopefully by Sunday for our HA flight to Vegas!
How awful. One of my closest friends lives in Honolulu and I had my wedding in Kilauea, Kauai last year with 56 guests from the mainland. The islands of Hawaii are always in my heart. I am so sorry to hear of all this. My thoughts and prayers are with you for good weather and a speedy recovery.

Mahalo, my friend! I do believe your thoughts and prayers have had their desired effect: the sun is back out, and I think this Kona storm may very well be on it's way out of here - and may it dissipate over the ocean without making landfall elswhere!
Our FlyerTalk ohana is certainly da kine!

More reds on the doppler over Kihei this afternoon!
I daresay it's breaking up.......scattered sun right now in Lahaina......but poor Kihei got hammered over the last few days: no electricity (Grand Wailea dark! No elevators, no nuthin!), and South Kihei Rd. got washed into the sea! http://mauinews.com/default.aspx

I was reminded of this thread a few weeks ago when I was in Kauai and heard a weather report. "Expected high today: 85 degrees. Average high: 85 degrees. Record high for this date: 87 degrees." That pretty much says it all. :D

Last few days it's been sort of dreary with overcast clouds and passing showers. Must be the Christmas Blues here in Honolulu.

We had our last day on Sunday.. the first "decent" day out of five.
And the first three days (Xmas -Friday) the winds were howling outside of room (24th fl) sounded like a freight train... but heck, we were in Hawaii.

The east and south sides of the Big Island are getting absolutely inundated, scarily so.
Big Island hit by heavy rains
Heavy rain is pounding the windward side of the Big Island, particularly Hilo, Puna and Ka'u where roads are flooded, sandbags are being requested by country road crews and a shelter has been opened, according to Big Island civil defense....
Rain is expected to continue through the night, as trade wind weather mixes with an upper level low causing unstable air.
More than 18 inches of rain has fallen in the past 24 hours in the Waiakea Uka area. More than nine inches has fallen during the same period in Hakalau area.....
There was a radio report that the bridge over the Hakalau Bay/Stream was "washed out." I don't know what that means, but if it means the worst that is a very serious thing.
Another report says that town of Pahala in the Ka`u district is under water.
Much of downtown Hilo roads closed or open one-way through the high spots.
Some dramatic video here: http://www.khon2.com/news/local/15147771.html

The rain made for very muddy conditions at the Punahou Carnival both days. We were there for most of the day on Friday and it wasn't too bad. But the Midway was terrible tonight. Almost lost my shoe a few times. Still can't beat that malasada and teri burger though!

Amazing amounts of rain; I hope the damage is not too great on the Big Island.
I did my best to remain "mud-free" last night at the Carnival; I was there from about 3pm - 7 pm. My class was actually working a shift at the Diamond Head malasada booth, but I was able to convince them I was on vacation.

Better today on the Big Island but still steady rain. About a dozen inches of rain in the last 36 hours mid-Hamakua coast and coming on 24 inches in parts of Hilo.

Arrived on Kaua`i yesterday, just in time for today's rain. Hanalei town got 7-8 inches this afternoon, with lots of lightning--more water than we got two years ago when the dam burst.
My yard is gone, under about 3 inches of standing water.
It looks like it's letting up now, but the flood warning is on for a couple more hours.

There'll be some windward and mauka showers, as there always are, with trades: in East Maui and the North Shore, plus Napili and Kapalua; Kauai and the East side of the B.I. will get some rain as well; but the South facing beaches: Lahaina; Kihei/Wailea/Honolulu/ and the Kona Coast will be sunny and hot! ;) (Let's hope!)!
BTW, during the last two weeks of extremely heavy rains Statewide, there was very little rain in Lahainatown: Puamana to Kaanapali. Cloudy, but little rain. Lahainatown is in the rain-shadow of Pu'u Kukui. Kihei/Wailea is in the rainshadow of Haleakala: subject to flooding from runoff from Haleakala's slopes; but getting very little actual rainfall as well, just like Lahainatown.
Word was the tourists were fleeing like lemmings from the constant rain in Kapalua and Napili last week: all requesting to be moved to hotels in Kaanapali.
It is the rainy season, in Hawai'i, after all: Nov. - Apr.
But "It never rains in Lahaina!" :D ;)

Not to worry, kvan! To paraphrase Mark Twain: "The reports of my rain have been greatly exagerrated!" ;)
Although the last week brought drenching rains statewide, it is sunny and clear in Lahaina, this morning: not a cloud in the sky! GORGEOUS! And I think it will hold for a while. There should be lots of "Sunshine in Paradise" clips going out over the airwaves during Pro Bowl tomorrow!

We come every year but are wary of the weather this time--our resvs are mar 18-apr 4--oahu and poipu. We had a bad experience 2 years ago with 6 wks of rain. Is this year supposed to be particularly bad weather--I can't get a feel for it. What is your take about outlook this spring break vs. other years?
Really hard to tell. The 40 days of rain was a fluke, IMHO, but there are still a good number of rainy days in the Spring. Last year was pretty dry. Maybe this is a start of a new trend?
While I have the opportunity: today is another beautiful day!
