Tried some dummy bookings on line for my coming trip to Shanghai. It looks like orbitz calculate tax and fee differently from travelocity. In addition to the tax and fee travelocity collected (about 15% for shanghai), orbitz add another per room per night charge there (about $6.5 per night). Since I did not find identical rooms in two sites which both offer pre-negotiated rate, I can not comment on if the base rate display is the same or not. But if you see two properties offer same as $50 per night, total will be different. Personally, I prefer travelocity's practice and its dollor off code.

Be careful with Orbitz rates. They are often nowhere NEAR as low as you might otherwise get.

Just out of interest I plugged in Brisbane Hilton for May 26/27/28 for OzFest.

Lowest orbitz is $US611.97 for the 3 nights. (Before any discounts.)

On Hilton.com the rate is about half that at $A145 per night. Same nights, same hotel. Around $US100 a night all in.

So even if this deal was offered to end May "saving" $50 on a $300 overcharge is not a saving. :)

That one's working, though I must say I'm underwhelmed with what I'm getting, as it looks like their "taxes and fees" is padding in $20 or so above actual taxes, making the effective discount $30 (or $10/night on a 3-dayer as a rule of thumb). Might work in some situations, but likely beatable with Priceline or Hotwire in others. Still, every bit helps.

I am not sure how I got those emails. I don't get them every week either. I've been doing a lot of hotel search for my upcoming summer trips. My guess is that if you log in to orbitz.com when you do your hotel search, their system will know you are looking for a hotel and therefore send you a coupon to give you some incentive.

I tried booking a room, just to see if it would work, and the coupon worked for a rate without a coupon icon, so you might want to try it without worrying about the coupon icon.

This is very common with orbitz and expedia and the likes....typically there is really little to no reason to book with them when one shops around...they count on people not looking around too much

I think the coupon code only works on selected hotels. If you click more options under hotel search, you can enter the code and when the search listing returns, the hotels that the coupon is valid for will have a note at the bottom.

Orbitz lowest price gurantee match the price after taking out $50.00 coupon. I found lot of hotels on other sites lot less than Orbitz in Bangkok but if have to compare the price after coupon then no saving.

Good! Just booked 4 nights at the Best Western Inn Orlando Airport using that 50$ coupon.. Orbitz's rate was already low, 44$ per night with a complimentary suite upgrade!!! (90$ on BW's web site...) 154$ all in for 4 nights in a suite! that's not even 40$ per night. Btw, reviews on tripadvisor.com seem to be very positive.
