I keep reading about the difficulty in getting upgrades on Phoenix-based flights. I will be flying to Dulles (IAD) in July, and my options are:
LAS -> IAD direct, on UAL, presumably in E+ since I'll be on TED with status
OR
LAS -> PHX -> IAD. The flight will be on a Thursday, and the Phoenix flight will leave at 8:45am, arriving in IAD at 4:09pm.
Thanks in advance for any opinions.

Well, you have the option of LAS-IAD non-stop. It's a red-eye, but it is an option, and red-eyes are virtually guaranteed upgrades. Never missed a single overnight flight.

I am US Silver. I know about the red-eye, but I probably won't be able to take that. The Phoenix-Dulles flight works out the best for me; I was hoping one of the Phoenix-based FT'ers could give me a good guess.
Thanks.

Well as Plat I didn't get upgraded either way. I was able to snag an exit row on the back though. Probably would change today as a Chairman though. Good luck as a silver. Your best bet is to snag an exit row. Even taking out miles to use for a confirmed upgrade won't do much good either as it's almost impossible these days. HP doesn't release too many seats these days, whether it's for comp. upgrades or rewards I'm afraid :(

Given the dismal upgrade percentage of many Plats on the PHX-IAD route, I think it's safe to say that your odds are low.
If it's an option, BWI is a completely different story. My brother was Silver last year and was upgraded something like 5 out of 6 flights.

Don't fret too much, on UA, unless you are Global Service or a 1k on a high fare, PHX-IAD can be difficult to upgrade also.
