I am thinking of coming in to see my Mets play on 4/11 (opening day) in DC. How would one get from BWI to RFK via train, and how long should I budget for it? Would it be cheaper/easier to just rent a car?

Cheaper? I doubt it, not with the cost of parking!

I think the cheapest route is to take the bus (# anyone?, I think its a metrobus route) to the Greenbelt station (green line); switch to the orange or blue (both work) and take that to the Stadium/Armory exit for RFK.

You can also catch the train (marc is much cheaper than amtrak) from the bwi station and get off at New Carrolton (orange line) for the metro and take that to the Stadium/Armory stop - 6 stops.

Slawecki has it right. Fly to DCA and take the Metro blue line in the direction of Largo Town Center. Get off at Stadium Armory. You can save a little time by changing trains. Take the yellow line in the direction of Gallery Place and change to the blue line (again in the direction of Largo Town Center) at L'Enfant. Buy a fare card worth enough to go both ways at the National Airport stop, since the lines to buy fare cards after the game at Stadium-Armory can be very long.

Amtrak is a good alternative and you can walk to the Stadium from Union Station in about 30 minutes. Just go out the front door, turn left, and go down Massachusetts Ave. to Stanton Park. Cut through the park and take C Street east to the Stadium. The neighborhood is fine unless you choose to be rude to the citizens.

Forget BWI for the Nats. However, it works great for the Birds since the light rail line goes directly from the terminal to Camden Yards.

Make sure to check the schedules closely as those trains don't run regularly during non rush hour times during the day. You also might not have the option to return on the marc train as they don't run in the evening.

The BWI bus to Greenbelt is a good inexpensive option.

What time are you getting in? Allot ten minutes to get from the terminal at BWI to the BWI rail station by the free airport shuttle bus. Then according to the published schedules:

MARC Train 427 departs BWI Rail Station at 11:56am, arrives New Carrollton 12:19pm; the fare is $5. Metro Orange Line departs NCR at 12:30pm or 12:42pm, arrives Stadium-Armory Metro station at 12:44pm or 12:56pm. The fare is $1.85. Train 425 departs and gets you in about 45 minutes earlier.

Or Amtrak 141 departs BWI at 12:31pm ($15), arrives at NCR 12:44pm. The previous Amtrak departs BWI 10:57am.

Or Metrobus B30 ($3) departs BWI at 11:40am, arriving at Greenbelt 12:09pm; take the Metro Green Line and transfer to the Orange to New Carrollton or Blue to Largo at L'Enfant Plaza to arrive at Stadium-Armory around 1:06pm ($2.35). The previous B30 departs at 11am, getting you in about 35 minutes earlier.

For what it's worth, they've really bolstered MARC service over the past few years - there's 20+ frequencies each way on the Penn Line these days. Roughly hourly service (much more around rush hours), with the last northbound train departing WAS at 10:45 p.m.

Still only Monday-Friday, though.

I just checked and you are right. Penn line does have good coverage. I usually take the Camden line as it is closer to home and coverage there is not nearly as good. Looks like the MARC/metro option will work well for the OP.
