Roughly how much would a taxi be? $60 or so?

Do those Super Shuttle type vans go all the way to San Jose?

Any other options?

TIA!

I don't know if this will help or not

but could a car rental possibly work out? It could be cheaper than a taxi.

It doesn't sound applicable to your situation, but San Jose airport to downtown San Fran in a taxi gets expensed at a bit over $100 IIRC.

Agree a car rental would be cheaper. If you had the time, then SFO BART to Millbrae for a Caltrain connection would be much less expensive.

When are you getting in?

If you take an airport taxi (ie a taxi waiting at the stand at SFO) it will cost you probably closer to $100 or $120 to go to San Jose.
That is because all taxis at SFO get to charge 1.5X the meter rate once they go 15 miles outside of city limits...and San Jose is a lot further than 15 miles from SFO. I've taken taxis from SFO to Menlo Park and that costs 70 to 85$ depending on the traffic. Menlo Park is about halfway between SFO and San Jose

If you pre-arrange for a taxi (which frankly isn't that feasible as all taxi companies require you to call them from the airport before they send anyone to pick you up and so you might have to wait before your taxi gets there) then these taxis will be cheaper as they do not have to charge the 1.5X surcharge.

Cheapest is Caltrain. You take the airtram/airtrain (free airport electronic train) to the international terminal. Then you transfer to BART and take a 5 min ride to Milbrae Station. This is where Caltrain and Bart meet. You then catch a train to San Jose. If you want a fast ride you can take the Baby Bullet train which only makes about 4 stops between SF and SJ and takes less than an hour. Or if you take the regular Caltrain you might make 10 stops (more or less) and take 1.5 hrs (more or less). Depending on when you arrive at Milbrae you might have to wait 30 minutes or more for the train.

If you take a rental car you will have to take a shuttle bus to the rental car parking garage and drive from there. Depending on the time of day it could take you 1hr or more to get to downtown San Jose on 101. I recommend you take 280 instead as it generally has much less traffic and will also take you to downtown San Jose (and it's a much prettier drive).

Rental wasn't a good option for me this trip. After a horrible series of train and plane delays, a 26 hour trip left me at SFO at 1:30am. So a taxi was the only option. Even at that hour with no traffic it was $130 thanks to the 50% surcharge mentioned above. :(

Probably SuperShuttle or South/East Bay Shuttle would have been about $40, if there were any around at that hour (and you could have tolerated a few stops along the way).
They would go that far, other companies don't.

If you want to try the BART/Caltrain route, or some other mode of public transit, visit 511.rog and type in your start point, end point and times. It will let you know about the fastest, or if you wish cheapest, route from point a to point b in the Bay Area. Alternatively, you might want to fly into SJC. Enjoy your trip!

...except I don't believe they serve SFO and it would sure be silly to head out to San Jose by going to the Transbay terminal in SF!

Greyhound doesn't serve the airport, but San Francisco to San Jose is $7.00 one way! :D

Take the BART from SFO to the Milbrae caltrain station (~2.00) -- the hop on the caltrain (<$10) -- this is the quickest and most comfortable way -- also cheapest.
