Contained as an insert to today's GLOBE AND MAIL was a copy of WESTJETS's 10th Anniversary 28-page magazine. Folksy, corny, homey and not very humble it "celebrates a high-flying decade" with the inside story of the carrier's "hard-fought success story"! With 15-pages of editorial content (including front cover and index page), Clive is heralded on six of them... Oh yes, there is a single mention of Mark Hill (as one of the three founders), but not in the light as we know him best. There's also a revisionist history of Canadian civil aviation from WS's perspective, and a whole page of "Bites of the Big Cheese" so you know some of the weighty subjects that fill Clive's head.
Happy birthday, WestJet.

Quick.
Name 3 LCC's in North America that have been around for 10 years that did not go into CCAA / bankruptcy protection somewhere along the way in their first 10 years.
No other sched airline flying coast to coast Canada managed to stay out of bankruptcy, let alone survive over the the period.
It's a heck of a feat. ^

In today's Globe & Mail, Clive Beddoe, the vanity stricken CEO of Wastejet, puts out a self-promotion ad in the form of a 'book' (insert) congratulating the airline on ten (10) years in business.
In an interesting twist, Clive says that the airline's success is, for the most part, due to his unique corporate philosophy of putting his employees first, ahead of both PAX and Shareholders.
RM, this guy may be a blowheart, but are you listening?

You're comparing the anti-competitive Canadian market (with 1-2 competetors) to the capitalist US market (dozens of competetors).
Was WestJet's formation smart, wise, and good for consumers? Definately.
Heck of a feat? Put down the pompoms.
