View Full Version : Tokyo get-together Fri. April 7th

I'll be coming to Tokyo on business the first week in April and would like to meet up with the Japan gang. mjm and I have been discussing dates, etc., and would like to propose the following:

Date: Friday, April 7th
Time: 8:30pm
Place: Jusanya
(bento.com review in English here (http://www.bento.com/rev/1875.html) , info in Japanese here (http://www.kanda-izumiya.com/nomeru-mise/list-mise-juusanya_idx.htm). I think the info about number of table seats may be incorrect in the J bit. )
It's an old haunt of mine, with good and not crazily priced food.

As mjm is a Japanese salariman ;) , we've set the time for 8:30, but if people want to meet up earlier I know a decent beer bar around the corner (just have to make sure it's still in business). We've still got time until the actual date, so we can work things out along the way.

My husband and I will be arriving on the 12th and leaving on the 18th. We'd be interested too (unless this is for "singles only"). Robyn

I won't be around that week, so I think mjm and I will stick to the 7th, but it sounds like you could put quite the group together if you tried organizing something for then! And while the event on the 7th is certainly not singles only, I suppose you can create whatever rules you like if you organize. :D

Thanks to Calcifer for getting the ball going on this. The 7th looks to be a fun one. I am looking forward to a new restaurant myself. Having FTers get together in Tokyo is very fine with me. So foodies and beverage enjoyers, I have this one in bold on my calendar.

If there are some whose dates coincide for the following week and who want to try to hang out for dinner one night convenient to all, I do live here......... ;)

See you soon,

Mike

That would be great. My husband has been learning Japanese for a year in preparation for this trip (our division of labor when we travel is I make reservations and he learns languages) - and I think he'd like the opportunity to practice with a tolerant audience :) . Only problem we might have is he's a broken down runner - wears a big knee brace from way up here to way down there - so sitting in a traditional restaurant on the floor is not an option (unless the restaurant has a crane to get him off the floor). Other than that - we love to eat good food - of any kind - and are very open to new things. Robyn

I just checked on the restaurant and found that it's <100 m to my office.

Guess I'll go in disguise... :D

So far our working hours have me in the office before bars open & out after they close. I'm back in the US until 3/28 but I will make a point of checking as soon as I get back.

Tape @ eleven.

I've been able to confirm the continued existence of said beer bar, so anyone who wants to meet up before dinner for a drink, let me know. And there's still room at the dinner table!

If you don't mind having a new FT member and not-so-frequent traveler along, I'd be interested. I'll be in Tokyo all that week, wrapping up a trade show on the 7th. If there are no plans with my work associates for that evening, I'd be up for some yakitori and sake. I may not know until 24 hours or less beforehand if I'd be able to make it.

No problems--I'll put you down on the list! I'll send around some PMs that week so you know how to contact me if necessary.

Or maybe the Star Wars theme, Bill Murray style..."Star Wars-s-s-s-s, yes we need Star Wars-s-s-s-s"?

I'll be in Japan Apr 4-12, and in Tokyo from that 4th thru the 9th. I'm new to the FT board but it would be fun to meet up with y'all!

Sorry to hear you won't make it, Pickles. cheepsk8travel, I'll add you to the list!

I'm having troubles logging into FT from my office here, so this may be my last post for a while. I will PM the attendees as of now with my cell phone number. As mjm kindly made the reservations for us, I'm going to ask him to take care of the final numbers--it's a pretty small place and we'll have to confirm if we can expand the reservation to more than 6 people.

Looking forward to seeing everyone!

mjm, kcvt750, rts123, it was great meeting you all last night! rts123, did you make it back to Odaiba before the trains stopped?

And again, my apologies for falling asleep on everyone... :o I felt incredibly spoiled staying in bed until 8am this morning!

Meeting Calcifer, kcvt750, mjm and Rob (bento.com) was an excellent way to cap off the week and escape from my "exile" on Daiba! Great company, great food & drink, great directions for getting there, what more could one want?

Being in the company of those with extensive experience in Japan allowed me to eat at the kind of place I normally wouldn't go into due to my lack of Japanese language skills and for that I am grateful.

I did indeed make the train to Daiba, though I sprinted from the Marinouchi to the Yamanote at Tokyo Station. I got the 12:10 Yurikamome from Shimbashi and there was at least one more at 12:20.

I'm in Yokohama now and just got back from dinner at a microbrew place that Rob suggested, so the good vibe from last night continues. True to the review, the beer was quite good and the food was decent enough.

Thanks again to all who showed up last night.

Do I get a sense I missed meeting Robb Satterwhite, the Frank Bruni of Tokyo at the FT get-together? Ar! That's too bad. We'll have to organize another one.

Well, I personally find him more credible than Frank Bruni, but yep, Robb was my +1. I'll have to see if I can convince him to start lurking here!

I mentioned previously that I will be in Tokyo from 4/12-4/18 - and wondered whether anyone would like to get together then. I've had contact with 1 FT member who is interested. And anyone else is welcome too. But if one of you knows Robb Satterwhite - tell him that we'd love to join him for a convenient lunch or dinner at a restaurant of his choice - our treat :) . Think I "owe him one" after everything of his I've read. We'll be flying to Newark tomorrow afternoon - and to Tokyo Tuesday morning. May be out of commission for a few days. Robyn
